Chapter 2 - The Price of Acceptance
Vivienne treated marriage as a business merger.
She criticized Mara’s clothes, her career, her friends, and even the way she spoke during formal dinners. Whenever Mara defended herself, Vivienne accused her of being overly sensitive.
Camille was less subtle.
She frequently reminded Mara that Adrian had once dated models, television personalities, and the daughters of wealthy executives.
“You’re very different from his usual type,” Camille said during one family gathering.
“I hope that’s a compliment,” Mara replied.
Camille smiled. “It can be.”
Adrian always waited until they were alone before apologizing.
“My mother doesn’t trust outsiders.”
“Your sister calls me temporary.”
“She’s protective.”
“They humiliate me in front of people.”
“They’ll stop once we’re married.”
That answer disturbed Mara more than the insults.
Adrian was not asking his family to respect her. He was asking Mara to survive them until leaving became more difficult.
Still, she remembered the man he had been at the beginning. She believed the pressure of running Vale Meridian had changed him temporarily.
The company was struggling.
Its newest product had failed federal safety testing. Two major customers had canceled contracts. Senior engineers were leaving, and rumors of bankruptcy had begun spreading through the industry.
Adrian became obsessed with saving the company and preserving the Vale name.
He slept less, drank more, and started measuring people according to their usefulness.
Mara offered advice, but Adrian rarely listened.
“You understand consulting,” he told her. “This is different.”
Mara had rescued companies larger than Vale Meridian, yet she allowed him to underestimate her.
She reviewed the company’s public records in secret and discovered something worse than Adrian had admitted.
Vale Meridian was not merely struggling.
It was collapsing.
Within three months, the bank could seize its assets. Thousands of employees could lose their jobs, and Adrian’s family would lose almost everything.
Mara faced a decision.
She could reveal who she was and offer help openly.
