Chapter 6 - The Public Rejection
The lunch began with champagne and carefully rehearsed speeches.
Vivienne praised Adrian’s leadership.
Camille described the Vale family as a dynasty built through discipline, loyalty, and sacrifice.
No one mentioned Mara’s career.
When Mara was finally invited to speak, Vivienne interrupted before she reached the microphone.
“Perhaps Adrian should say a few words first.”
Adrian stood.
He thanked the executives who had supported Vale Meridian during its recovery. He thanked his mother for protecting the family legacy and Camille for helping organize the wedding.
Then he looked at Mara.
“My fiancée has experienced some difficulty understanding what membership in this family requires.”
A few guests shifted uncomfortably.
Mara remained seated.
Adrian continued.
“She has questioned our traditions, challenged our legal protections, and created unnecessary tension during what should have been a joyful time.”
Mara felt every eye turn toward her.
Vivienne looked pleased.
Camille lifted her champagne glass.
Adrian expected Mara to apologize publicly and agree to sign the prenuptial agreement.
Instead, she asked, “Is this why you invited me?”
“To clear the air.”
“You could have spoken to me privately.”
“I tried.”
“No,” Mara said. “You tried to pressure me privately. This is something else.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“Don’t embarrass yourself.”
Mara looked directly at him. “Are you still planning to marry me?”
The room became silent.
Adrian had expected submission, not a question that forced him to reveal his intentions.
He looked toward his mother.
Vivienne gave a slight nod.
Adrian turned back to Mara.
“Don’t call me your future husband.”
He believed the sentence would frighten her.
Instead, Mara removed her ring.
“Of course,” she said. “I understand.”

At that moment, a waiter entered carrying the cream envelope.
The decision had been made.
