The story reached the press before the lunch ended.
The headlines focused on the canceled wedding, but the financial investigation soon became more important.
Vale Meridian’s employees learned that the mysterious fund behind the company’s survival belonged to Mara. Many had assumed she was merely Adrian’s quiet fiancée who attended company events and stood politely in the background.
Now they discovered that she had protected their salaries while Adrian spent company money preserving his image.
Mara refused interviews about the breakup.
Instead, she held a meeting with the employees.
She stood on the factory floor without security or photographers and explained the restructuring plan.
No manufacturing facilities would close.
Employee health benefits would remain unchanged.
The failed product line would be suspended, and resources would be redirected toward systems that engineers believed could succeed.
An independent ethics committee would review executive decisions.
“We are not saving a family name,” Mara told them. “We are saving the work created by the people in this building.”
The employees applauded.
Adrian watched the speech from his mother’s mansion.
He had been locked out of his corporate accounts. His executive vehicle had been reclaimed, and the company apartment in Manhattan was no longer available to him.
Vivienne blamed Mara for everything.
Camille blamed Adrian for failing to discover Mara’s identity sooner.
Neither accepted responsibility.
Adrian finally understood that his family’s loyalty depended entirely on his usefulness.
He attempted to contact Mara repeatedly.
She blocked his number.
He sent flowers to her office.
She donated them to a hospital.
He wrote a letter admitting that he had made mistakes but claimed the pressure of saving the company had changed him.
Mara read only the first page.
Pressure had not created Adrian’s cruelty.
