Chapter 3 - the warning at the car window)

Laura's first instinct was to lock the doors.

They were already locked.

Vanessa bent slightly and tapped the glass again.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Laura's heart hammered.

Vanessa pointed toward the button.

Lower the window.

Laura shook her head.

Vanessa smiled.

Then she walked around the front of the car and stood directly in the headlights.

Laura could have driven away.

Instead, she opened the door.

She hated herself for it.

But fear had spent too many months controlling the shape of her life.

"What are you doing here?" Laura asked.

Vanessa tilted her head.

"I was about to ask you the same thing."

"My daughter was brought here."

"Was she?"

"I have a photograph."

Vanessa's expression did not change.

"Then you should show your attorney."

"What's inside that house?"

"Why don't you ask Daniel?"

"I will."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You should be careful, Laura."

"Is that a threat?"

"It's advice."

"Stay away from my daughter."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Emily isn't only your daughter."

"She's not yours."

Something flickered in Vanessa's eyes.

Then it was gone.

"No," she said quietly. "She's not."

Laura heard the house door open.

Daniel stepped outside.

He stopped when he saw them.

"What the hell is going on?"

Laura turned toward him.

"You tell me."

Daniel descended the steps.

"Why are you here?"

"Why is Emily being brought to this house?"

Daniel's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"She isn't."

"I have a picture."

Vanessa said, "She's been following us."

Daniel looked at Laura.

"Have you?"

"Who owns this house?"

"Go home."

"Who owns it?"

"Laura."

"What's the red room?"

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

Vanessa moved between them.

"You're trespassing."

"I'm on a public street."

"You're stalking us."

Daniel rubbed a hand across his face.

"Stop. Both of you."

Laura stared at him.

"She told a therapist Vanessa brings her here and makes her answer questions on camera."

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

That look mattered.

It was not confusion.

It was recognition.

Laura stepped backward.

"You knew."

"No."

"You knew."

"I knew Vanessa was helping Emily get more comfortable with the custody transition."

"By interrogating her?"

"That's not what happened."

"What did happen?"

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Emily gets confused when adults put words in her mouth."

Laura lunged one step forward.

"Don't talk about my child like that."

Daniel moved quickly.

"Enough."

The man in the gray coat appeared in the doorway.

Everyone went silent.

He was perhaps fifty.

Dark hair streaked with silver.

Tired eyes.

He looked first at Daniel.

Then Vanessa.

Then Laura.

Vanessa's expression tightened.

The man spoke.

"This conversation shouldn't be happening outside."

Laura pointed toward him.

"Who are you?"

No answer.

"Who are you?"

Daniel said, "Laura, leave."

The man in gray watched her carefully.

Something about his face suggested he wanted to speak.

But Vanessa turned toward him.

"Go inside, Miles."

Laura memorized the name.

Miles.

That was all she had.

She drove home.

Sarah was furious when Laura admitted what she had done.

"I specifically told you not to go."

"I know."

"You could have damaged your case."

"I know."

"Did you record the conversation?"

Laura froze.

"No."

Sarah sighed.

"Then write down everything while you remember it."

Laura did.

She included the man's name.

Miles.

Sarah searched property records.

West Vale Holdings was connected to several real estate entities but none linked clearly to Daniel or Vanessa.

Then Sarah searched the name Miles in connection with Daniel's company.

Three days later, she called Laura.

"I found someone."

"Miles?"

"Miles Harrow. Former compliance director at Daniel's firm."

"Former?"

"Resigned eight months ago."

"Why?"

"No public explanation."

"Do you have a picture?"

Sarah sent it.

Laura opened the image.

It was him.

The man in the gray coat.

Laura called immediately.

"That's him."

Sarah exhaled.

"Then we need to know why a former compliance officer is meeting your husband in a house where your child may have been recorded."

The mystery deepened the next weekend.

Daniel was scheduled to have Emily from Friday afternoon until Sunday evening.

Laura almost refused the visit.

Sarah advised against it without a court order.

"Unless Emily reports physical danger, withholding custody can be used against you."

Laura packed Emily's bag.

She knelt by the front door.

"If you ever feel scared, you can call me."

Emily nodded.

"If somebody tells you you can't call me, what do you do?"

Emily whispered, "Tell you when I get home."

Laura kissed her forehead.

Daniel arrived alone.

For the first time, Laura felt relieved Vanessa wasn't there.

But at eight thirty that evening, her phone rang.

Emily's name appeared.

Laura answered immediately.

"Sweetheart?"

No response.

Then breathing.

Very quiet.

"Emily?"

A whisper.

"Mom."

Laura stood.

"Where are you?"

"I don't know."

"Is Dad there?"

"No."

"Is Vanessa there?"

Silence.

Then Emily whispered.

"She's outside the door."

Laura grabbed her keys.

"Can you see outside?"

"No."

"Is there a window?"

"Red curtains."

Laura stopped breathing.

"Emily, listen to me. Stay on the phone."

A door opened on the other end.

Emily gasped.

Vanessa's voice came through clearly.

May you like

"Who are you calling?"

The line went dead.
