Chapter 15 - the photograph that should not exist)

Laura called Owen before touching anything else.

Police arrived within fifteen minutes.

They photographed the envelope.

They collected fingerprints.

The porch camera was reviewed.

At 9:42 p.m., the image flickered for eleven seconds.

During those eleven seconds, the envelope appeared.

Someone had interfered with the camera.

That required preparation.

Knowledge.

Confidence.

Owen stood in the kitchen staring at the photograph.

"Who knows Emily's school schedule?"

"Too many people."

"Who knows this address?"

"Everyone involved in the custody case."

"Who knew about the old camera system?"

Laura looked at him.

"Daniel."

"Miles?"

"Maybe."

"Vanessa?"

"Definitely."

Owen turned the photograph beneath the light.

"It's professionally printed."

"What does that tell us?"

"Almost nothing."

Laura's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She did not answer.

A voicemail appeared.

Owen told her to put the phone on speaker.

The recording lasted eight seconds.

No voice.

Only music.

A piano melody.

Laura listened twice.

Then her face changed.

"I know that song."

Owen looked at her.

"From where?"

"The music box."

"What music box?"

"Emily's broken music box. The one where we found the drive."

They went upstairs.

The toy chest stood open.

Laura lifted the wooden music box.

She turned the key.

Nothing happened.

It had been broken for years.

Or so she believed.

Owen examined the bottom.

A small panel had been removed and replaced.

Inside was an empty compartment.

The USB drive had never simply been hidden there.

The music box had been modified.

By someone who expected the drive to be found.

Emily stood in the doorway.

Laura quickly covered the compartment.

"Sweetheart, go back to your room."

Emily stared at the box.

Then she whispered, "That's not my music box."

Laura froze.

"What?"

Emily stepped closer.

"Mine had a moon."

Laura looked at the lid.

A painted star decorated the top.

"You said Dad gave this to you."

"No."

"You told me it came with your toys from his apartment."

Emily shook her head.

"I said the toys came from Dad."

Laura's pulse quickened.

"Where did the music box come from?"

Emily thought.

"A lady gave it to me."

Owen crouched.

"What lady?"

Emily looked nervous.

"At school."

"When?"

"A long time ago."

"Before Vanessa?"

Emily nodded.

"Do you remember her name?"

"No."

"What did she look like?"

Emily closed her eyes.

"Brown hair."

Laura waited.

"Anything else?"

Emily opened her eyes.

"She had the same necklace as Grandma."

Laura felt confused.

"My mother?"

Emily nodded.

"Her little silver tree."

Laura stopped breathing.

Laura's mother, Helen, had worn a silver tree pendant every day for thirty years.

It had belonged to Laura's grandmother.

There were only two matching pendants.

One belonged to Helen.

The other had belonged to Helen's younger sister.

A woman Laura had not seen since she was twelve.

A woman her mother claimed had died overseas.

Owen noticed Laura's expression.

"Who are you thinking of?"

Laura sat on the edge of Emily's bed.

"My aunt."

"Name?"

"Rebecca."

The room went completely still.

Owen spoke first.

"Rebecca what?"

Laura looked at him.

"Rebecca Hale."

Owen's face changed.

"Claire's mother?"

"No."

Laura shook her head slowly.

"That can't be Claire's mother. Rebecca Hale was my mother's sister."

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything Laura had experienced in the courtroom.

She grabbed her phone.

Her mother answered on the third ring.

"Laura?"

"Mom."

"What's wrong?"

Laura struggled to speak.

"Did Aunt Rebecca have a daughter?"

No answer.

"Mom?"

Helen whispered, "Who told you?"

Laura stood.

"Did she?"

Another silence.

Then Helen began crying.

"Laura, I wanted to tell you."

Laura's hand tightened around the phone.

"Tell me what?"

"Rebecca didn't die overseas."

"I know."

"She changed her name."

Laura looked at Owen.

"To Hale?"

Helen inhaled sharply.

"How do you know that?"

Laura closed her eyes.

"Mom, did Rebecca have a daughter named Claire?"

Helen whispered.

"Yes."

Laura sat down.

Claire Hale.

The courtroom clerk.

The woman who had risked her career to deliver the video.

The woman whose mother lost money through Daniel's firm.

The woman who had quietly stepped into Laura's life at exactly the moment Emily needed evidence.

Claire was Laura's cousin.

But that still did not explain the music box.

"Mom, why did Rebecca disappear from our family?"

Helen did not answer.

"Why?"

"Because she was afraid."

"Of who?"

Helen's voice became barely audible.

"The same people your father worked for."

Laura felt the room tilt.

"My father?"

Owen stood.

Laura had lost her father in a car accident when she was fourteen.

At least that was the story she had always been told.

"Mom, what did Dad have to do with West Vale?"

Helen began sobbing.

"Laura, don't say that name on the phone."

Laura went cold.

"You know West Vale."

"Hang up."

"Mom."

"Hang up now."

The line disconnected.

Laura stared at the screen.

A second later, another message arrived from the unknown number.

This time it contained a video.

Ten seconds long.

Laura pressed play.

The image was grainy.

Old.

A room she did not recognize.

Her father sat at a table.

Alive.

The timestamp was dated three years after the car accident that supposedly killed him.

Across from him sat Rebecca Hale.

Laura's aunt.

Between them lay a black folder.

Then a third person stepped into frame.

The face remained hidden.

But the voice was clear.

Male.

Calm.

"Once Laura has a child, we will have leverage again."

The recording ended.

Laura could not breathe.

Owen replayed the sentence.

Once Laura has a child, we will have leverage again.

Emily stood near the doorway.

"Mom?"

Laura immediately locked the phone.

"Go to your room, sweetheart."

Emily looked frightened.

"Are we in trouble again?"

Laura crossed the room and held her.

"No one is taking you from me."

She meant it.

Whatever came next, she meant it.

Owen's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"Where?"

He listened.

"When?"

Laura watched him.

"What happened?"

Owen ended the call.

"Vanessa was attacked during transport."

Laura stared.

"Is she alive?"

"Yes."

"Who did it?"

"They don't know."

"Why?"

Owen looked at the black phone in Laura's hand.

"Before she lost consciousness, she told the officer one thing."

Laura waited.

"What?"

Owen answered.

"She said they finally found the Carter girl."

Laura instinctively pulled Emily closer.

Outside, a car moved slowly past the house.

Owen reached for the curtain.

The vehicle disappeared around the corner.

Then Laura's phone vibrated one final time.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Laura standing in Emily's bedroom.

Holding her daughter.

The picture had been taken only seconds earlier.

From somewhere outside the house.

Beneath the photograph was one sentence.

YOUR FATHER KEPT ONE SECRET FOR TWELVE YEARS.

Laura looked toward the dark window.

Owen switched off the bedroom light and pulled Emily away from the glass.

Police units began moving toward the street.

Laura stared at the message again.

Her father had been declared dead twenty five years ago.

Yet someone had filmed him alive three years after his funeral.

Someone had known Emily would exist before she was born.

And somewhere inside the history Laura's family had buried, there was a reason Vanessa had chosen Daniel.

A reason West Vale had entered their marriage.

A reason Rebecca had vanished.

And perhaps a reason the stranger outside the courtroom had watched Emily point at Vanessa without showing even the slightest surprise.

Laura looked down at her daughter.

For months, she had believed she was fighting to protect Emily from one cruel woman.

Now she understood something far more terrifying.

May you like

Vanessa had only been the door.

And someone had just opened it.
