Chapter 12 - the missing drive)

The missing drive became the center of the investigation.
Daniel had copied a recording of Vanessa discussing Eric.
He claimed it disappeared from his apartment.
Vanessa believed he had given it to Laura.
Laura never had it.
Miles never saw it.
Police searched Daniel's apartment twice.
Nothing.
Then Emily remembered something.
She was drawing at Laura's kitchen table when she suddenly asked, "Is Dad's blue key important?"
Laura looked up.
"What blue key?"
"The one in my toy box."
Laura froze.
"Your toy box?"
Emily nodded.
"When Dad moved, he gave me some toys from his apartment."
They went upstairs.
Emily opened a wooden chest.
At the bottom were dolls, coloring books and a broken music box.
Inside the music box was a small blue USB drive.
Laura stared.
"Did Dad put this here?"
"I don't know."
She called Owen.
Police collected it.
Daniel was questioned.
He swore he had never hidden the drive in Emily's belongings.
The contents were encrypted.
Investigators eventually opened it.
There were three files.
The first was the apartment recording Daniel described.
Vanessa spoke on the phone.
"Eric thinks the police will protect him."
A male voice could faintly be heard through the speaker.
Vanessa replied.
"No. He doesn't know about the second account."
Then she said.
"I'll handle Daniel. You handle Eric."
The second file was a spreadsheet listing names and transactions.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Maybe millions.
The third file was a video.
No one expected it.
The image showed Daniel's office.
The date was seventeen months earlier.
Daniel entered.
A man followed him.
Brown hair.
Gray suit.
Medium height.
Victor.
Daniel sat at his desk.
The man handed him documents.
They spoke for twelve minutes.
The audio was clear.
Victor explained that several transactions needed fast approval.
Daniel asked questions.
Victor promised large consulting fees.
Then Daniel signed.
Laura watched the video with Sarah.
Her chest tightened.
"He met him."
Sarah nodded.
"Daniel lied."
Again.
Laura had thought she was beyond being surprised.
She was not.
Daniel admitted the truth when confronted.
He had met Victor once.
He claimed he did not know the transfers were illegal.
"Then why lie about meeting him?" Laura asked.
"Because after Eric disappeared, I realized Victor might be connected."
"So you protected yourself."
"Yes."
"Again."
Daniel looked exhausted.
"Yes."
Laura walked away.
There would be no dramatic reconciliation.
No moment where Daniel's cooperation transformed him into a misunderstood hero.
He had failed because fear repeatedly mattered more to him than truth.
That truth was strangely freeing.
Laura no longer needed to decide whether Daniel was good or evil.
He was simply responsible.
Investigators offered him a cooperation agreement that did not eliminate criminal exposure.
Daniel accepted.
He surrendered his passport.
He turned over accounts.
He agreed to testify.
Vanessa learned about the drive.
Her attorney requested a meeting with prosecutors.
Within two days, rumors circulated that she wanted a deal.
Miles believed she would identify Victor.
"Will they release her?" Laura asked.
"Not with the child assault case."
"Good."
Miles looked at her.
"You're allowed to hate her."
"I do."
"But hatred makes people careless."
Laura's expression hardened.
"So does forgiveness."
Miles smiled faintly.
"Fair enough."
Vanessa's proffer lasted five hours.
Details were sealed.
That evening, police arrested two financial intermediaries in another city.
Victor was not among them.
Then Vanessa made a request.
She wanted to speak to Laura.
Laura refused.
Vanessa asked again through attorneys.
No.
Then she sent a message through her lawyer.
Tell Laura I know who put the drive in Emily's toy box.
Laura agreed to the meeting.
It took place behind glass at the county detention center.
Vanessa looked different without styled hair and expensive clothes.
But the coldness remained.
Laura picked up the phone.
"You have five minutes."
Vanessa smiled.
"You always did pretend to be stronger than you are."
"Four minutes fifty seconds."
Vanessa's smile faded.
"I didn't put the drive there."
"I know."
"Daniel didn't either."
Laura said nothing.
"Victor did."
"Why?"
"Because he wanted it found."
Laura's stomach tightened.
"That makes no sense."
"It does if the drive isn't evidence against him."
"It shows his face."
Vanessa leaned closer.
"No, Laura."
May you like
Her voice dropped.
"It shows the face he wanted you to think was Victor."
