"I choose Dad because she hit me and threatened to kill Mom if I didn't choose Dad."
For one full second, nobody reacted.
The sentence was too shocking.
Too direct.
Then Laura stood.
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
Vanessa's smile vanished.
Emily kept pointing.
"She said Mom would die."
Vanessa rose.
"That's a lie."
Laura turned toward Daniel.
All the fear and anger of the past months collided.
"You left her alone with that woman."
Daniel stood.
"Laura."
Her hand struck his face.
The courtroom erupted.
Judge Halston slammed her hand against the bench.
"Order."
Laura immediately stepped back.
"I'm sorry, Your Honor."
Daniel held his cheek.
He did not complain.
Vanessa pointed toward Emily.
"She's lying."
Emily recoiled.
Judge Halston's expression hardened.
"Ms. Cole, sit down."
Vanessa remained standing.
"That child has been coached."
"Sit down."
"Her mother has manipulated this entire situation."
Judge Halston leaned forward.
"I have a video of you hitting that child."
Vanessa froze.
Laura stared at the judge.
Daniel slowly lowered his hand.
Even Sarah looked surprised.
Judge Halston turned toward the court clerk.
"Play the exhibit."
A monitor flickered on.
The image showed Laura's kitchen.
Date and time appeared in the corner.
Laura recognized the angle.
A small camera Daniel had installed years earlier near the living room entrance after neighborhood burglaries.
She had forgotten it existed.
The video showed Daniel leaving through the back door.
Emily sat at the kitchen island.
Vanessa entered from the hallway.
The courtroom watched.
Vanessa asked Emily about the custody case.
The sound was clear.
"Who are you choosing?"
Emily answered, "Mom."
Vanessa moved closer.
"Wrong answer."
Emily tried to climb down.
Vanessa grabbed her chin.
Then slapped her.
Not violently enough to knock her down.
But hard enough that Emily cried out.
Laura covered her mouth.
On screen, Vanessa leaned close.
"Tomorrow, you choose your dad, or I'll kill your mom."
The video ended.
The courtroom was silent.
Vanessa's face had gone white.
Her attorney whispered something urgently.
Judge Halston said, "This court received the video at six thirty this morning from an unidentified source. Law enforcement has authenticated enough of the file to justify immediate protective action."
Two deputies moved closer to Vanessa.
Her attorney stood.
"Your Honor, my client invokes her right to remain silent concerning any criminal allegation."
"That is her right."
Judge Halston turned toward Daniel.
"Mr. Carter, did you know this occurred?"
Daniel's voice shook.
"No."
Judge Halston studied him.
"I find that difficult to accept given the evidence already before the court concerning Ms. Cole's contact with your child."
Daniel looked down.
The judge continued.
"Effective immediately, Laura Carter is granted temporary sole legal and physical custody. Daniel Carter's visitation will remain supervised pending further review. Vanessa Cole is prohibited from any direct or indirect contact with Emily Carter."
Laura closed her eyes.
Relief washed through her so powerfully she nearly collapsed.
The judge looked toward Emily.
"You were very brave."
Emily began crying.
Laura rushed to her.
She held her daughter.
For the first time in months, Emily's body slowly relaxed.
It should have felt like the ending.
It was not.
As deputies approached Vanessa, she turned toward Daniel.
"You think this saves you?"
Daniel looked at her.
Vanessa laughed.
"You have no idea what you signed."
A deputy told her to stop speaking.
Vanessa continued.
"Ask Laura what happens when Victor sees the video."
Laura's blood went cold.
Then Vanessa was escorted through a side door.
At the back of the courtroom, Miles Harrow stood with his black folder.
Laura saw him.
"Miles."
He turned.
Owen moved toward him.
But before anyone reached him, another man slipped through the rear doors.
Miles saw him.
His face changed instantly.
Fear.
