Chapter 11 - victor was closer than anyone knew)

Owen chased Miles into the courthouse hallway.
Laura stayed with Emily.
Police caught Miles near the parking garage.
He did not resist.
He kept repeating one sentence.
"He's here."
"Who's here?" Owen demanded.
Miles stared toward the crowded courthouse entrance.
"Victor."
Security footage was reviewed.
Dozens of people entered and exited during the hearing.
Attorneys.
Families.
Court employees.
Reporters.
No one immediately matched a known photograph because no confirmed photograph of Victor existed.
Miles was questioned.
He admitted sending the courtroom video anonymously.
"Where did you get it?" investigators asked.
"From Daniel's old home security backup."
"Why anonymously?"
"Because I knew Vanessa would assume I sent it."
"She already knows you have evidence."
"Not that evidence."
"Why did you run?"
Miles rubbed his wrists.
"Because I saw him."
"Victor?"
"Yes."
"Describe him."
Miles did.
Male.
Mid forties.
Medium height.
Brown hair.
Gray suit.
Nothing distinctive.
Laura listened from another room.
"That could describe a thousand men," she told Owen.
"Exactly."
Emily was taken home under protection.
Laura finally allowed herself to feel relief about custody.
That night, mother and daughter ate pancakes for dinner.
Emily cut hers into crooked stars.
Laura nearly cried when she saw it.
"Why are you smiling?" Emily asked.
"I like your stars."
"They look bad."
"They look perfect."
Emily ate three.
Later, she slept without asking whether the doors were locked.
The main conflict had shifted.
Emily was safe from Vanessa.
But Daniel was not safe from the consequences of his choices.
Federal investigators froze several accounts.
Clients filed claims.
Daniel's firm placed him on indefinite leave.
He cooperated fully.
Laura did not defend him.
She also did not prevent supervised visits with Emily when professionals approved them.
The first visit lasted an hour.
Daniel brought no gifts.
He sat across from Emily in a monitored family room.
"I'm sorry," he said.
Emily looked at him.
"For what?"
Daniel's eyes filled.
"For not listening when you were scared."
Emily thought.
"Did you know Vanessa was mean?"
"Yes."
"Did you know she hit me?"
"No."
"Would you have stopped her?"
Daniel looked directly at his daughter.
"Yes."
Emily looked toward the supervising social worker.
Then back.
"Okay."
It was not forgiveness.
But it was the beginning of something honest.
Vanessa was charged with assault involving a minor and witness intimidation connected to the threat against Emily.
Financial charges remained under investigation.
Her attorney insisted she had nothing to do with Eric's disappearance.
Then investigators received a breakthrough.
Eric Cole was alive.
A hospital in another state reported a patient using an alias after a news story circulated.
Eric had been admitted months earlier after a serious car crash.
He had suffered memory loss.
He remembered enough now to identify himself.
Laura stared at the news article.
"So Vanessa didn't kill him."
Miles shook his head.
"Not necessarily."
"What does that mean?"
"Eric's car crash wasn't an accident."
According to Eric, he had been driving toward a police station with copies of financial records when another vehicle forced him off the road.
He woke weeks later confused.
Someone had taken his wallet.
His phone.
The documents.
He wandered until emergency services found him.
By the time he understood who he was, he was afraid to contact anyone.
"What does Eric remember about Victor?" Sarah asked.
Miles answered.
"More than I do."
Eric described Victor as someone who did not work for Vanessa.
Vanessa worked for him.
That changed everything.
The financial fraud had not originated with Vanessa.
She was part of a larger network.
One that identified wealthy or vulnerable targets and moved money through temporary companies.
West Vale Holdings was only one shell.
Daniel had been useful because his signature gave transfers legitimacy.
Eric had discovered the structure.
Vanessa tried to control him.
When she failed, she called Victor.
Laura asked the question nobody wanted to ask.
"Why was Victor in the courtroom?"
Miles looked at her.
"To see what we know."
"And now?"
"Now he knows we have the video."
Laura looked toward Emily's bedroom.
"Does he care about us?"
Miles hesitated.
"That depends."
May you like
"On what?"
"Whether Daniel has something Victor still needs."
