Chapter 9 - the watch in the photograph)

Daniel did not show the photograph immediately.

He looked across the room at Ethan.

His brother was reading one of Claire's emails.

Same face Daniel had known since childhood.

Same man who had flown from London without hesitation.

Same man who had told him to stay beside Isabella.

Daniel hated himself for the suspicion.

But suspicion had become unavoidable.

"Ethan."

His brother looked up.

Daniel handed him the phone.

Ethan stared at the image.

He did not speak.

Adrian watched both of them.

Jonah moved closer.

Ethan enlarged the wrist.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"You think that's mine."

"I don't know what I think."

Ethan reached under his cuff.

A steel watch.

Different.

Daniel remembered the gift.

"Where is it?"

Ethan's face tightened.

"I lost it."

"When?"

"Years ago."

"When?"

Ethan stared at the photograph.

"Around the time Claire died."

Daniel felt the air leave the room.

"You never told me."

"It was a watch."

"It was worth sixty thousand dollars."

"I had insurance."

"Where did you lose it?"

Ethan hesitated.

"Marbella."

Daniel stepped backward.

"When were you here?"

"That week."

"You told me you were in London."

"I was."

"Which is it?"

"I flew here for one day."

Daniel's voice hardened.

"Why?"

Ethan looked toward Adrian.

"Because Claire called me."

Silence.

Daniel's face went blank.

"My wife called you."

"Yes."

"Before she died."

"Yes."

"And for four years you never told me."

Ethan looked ashamed.

"She asked me not to."

Daniel crossed the room in two steps.

He stopped inches away.

"What did she say?"

"That she found financial irregularities."

"What else?"

"That she didn't know who to trust."

"Not even me?"

"Especially not anyone close to the money."

Daniel flinched.

Ethan continued.

"She didn't think you were involved. But she thought someone might be using your company."

"Why call you?"

"I'm a lawyer."

"You're my brother."

"Which is why she thought I would protect you if she was wrong."

Daniel stared.

"Were you with her that night?"

"No."

"Was that your watch?"

"I don't know."

"Did you meet her?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"Two days earlier."

"Where?"

"A café near Puerto Banús."

"What did she give you?"

Ethan's eyes changed.

Daniel saw it immediately.

"She gave you something."

"A key."

"To what?"

"I never found out."

"Where is it?"

"I kept it."

"Four years?"

"Yes."

Daniel almost shouted.

"Why?"

"Because she died forty eight hours later."

"And you said nothing."

"I was afraid."

Daniel stared at his brother.

"Of what?"

"That whoever killed her would realize she had given me something."

The word hung between them.

Killed.

Not crashed.

Not died.

Killed.

Adrian looked toward the window.

Jonah remained silent.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Show me the key."

Ethan reached into his wallet.

Behind a hidden seam, he removed a tiny brass key.

Daniel stared.

"What does it open?"

"I don't know."

Jonah took a photograph.

"No markings."

Adrian leaned closer.

"Actually."

He pointed to a small engraving.

C17.

Daniel looked at him.

"Meaning?"

Adrian frowned.

"I've seen that numbering system."

"Where?"

"Private storage boxes."

"In Marbella?"

"No."

"Gibraltar."

Victor Hale's lawyer registration address.

Daniel looked toward the gate monitor.

The black sedan was gone.

"They left."

Jonah checked exterior cameras.

"Five minutes ago."

Daniel turned to Adrian.

"Where in Gibraltar?"

Adrian stood.

"There are dozens of private vault services."

"Then we check dozens."

Ethan shook his head.

"Not today."

Daniel glared.

"Why?"

"Because Isabella needs you."

Daniel almost argued.

Then he remembered the kitchen.

Are you going away tomorrow?

He stopped.

"No."

Ethan nodded.

"I'll go."

Daniel looked at him.

The photograph flashed in his mind.

The watch.

Claire's secret call.

Four years of silence.

"Jonah goes with you."

Ethan understood.

"You don't trust me."

Daniel said nothing.

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Fair."

That hurt more than anger would have.

Upstairs, Isabella called for Daniel.

He went immediately.

She sat on the bed holding her damaged bracelet.

"I remembered something."

Daniel sat beside her.

"What?"

"The pool."

He waited.

She took a breath.

"Beatriz didn't push me."

Daniel felt a fraction of relief.

"Okay."

"She told me to stand on the edge."

"Why?"

"She wanted a picture."

Daniel's stomach tightened again.

"What kind of picture?"

"Me crying."

"Why were you crying?"

"Because she took my bracelet."

Daniel looked at the broken chain.

"Then what?"

"She said if I didn't do what she wanted, she would throw it in the pool."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Did she?"

"No."

"Then how did the star end up downstairs?"

Isabella looked confused.

"It broke later."

"In the blue room?"

She nodded.

Daniel gently touched her shoulder.

"What was Beatriz doing with pictures of you crying?"

Isabella shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Did she ever tell you?"

"No."

She paused.

"But she made videos too."

Daniel felt cold.

"What did she ask you to say?"

Isabella stared at the blanket.

"Things about you."

His pulse accelerated.

"What things?"

She whispered, "That you scared me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Did you say it?"

"I didn't want to."

"It's okay."

"She got angry."

Daniel squeezed her hand.

"You did nothing wrong."

Isabella looked at him.

"She said nobody would believe me if I changed the story."

Daniel understood the plan completely now.

They had not only been intimidating Isabella.

They had been manufacturing evidence against him.

Videos of a crying child.

Statements that her father frightened her.

A documented absent parent.

A replacement guardian.

A corporate clause triggered by criminal allegation.

Two plans converging on one event.

Daniel removed the bracelet from Isabella's hand.

"We're going to fix this."

"The bracelet?"

He smiled.

"That too."

His phone rang.

Jonah.

Daniel answered.

"We found the vault company."

"Already?"

"The C17 code narrowed it."

Daniel stood.

"What's inside?"

"We haven't opened it."

"Why not?"

"Ethan has the key."

"So open it."

Jonah's voice became careful.

"Daniel, the box isn't registered to Claire."

"Whose name?"

May you like

A pause.

Then Jonah said, "Yours."
