Chapter 15 - the promise at sunrise)

Three weeks later, Isabella returned to the garden.
Not because anyone told her to.
Because she wanted to.
The broken trash bags were gone.
The stone had been cleaned.
The hidden tunnel was sealed under police supervision.
Every security system had been replaced.
The blue room no longer existed.
Daniel ordered the wall removed completely.
Sunlight now reached the space from a new window facing the lawn.
Isabella chose what it would become.
An art room.
She painted the first picture herself.
A house.
A tree.
A girl.
And a man standing beside her.
Daniel did not ask why there was no woman in the picture.
Some questions belonged to the future.
Beatriz was found nine days after disappearing.
She walked into a police station in Seville accompanied by an attorney Daniel had never met.
She confessed to intimidation, unlawful confinement, falsifying recordings, manipulating household employees, and participating in Victor's guardianship scheme.
She denied physically injuring Isabella deliberately.
More importantly, she agreed to testify.
Daniel did not forgive her.
He also did not interfere when prosecutors considered her cooperation.
Isabella asked only one question.
"Will she come back here?"
"No."
Daniel answered without hesitation.
"Never."
That was enough.
Adrian surrendered his records voluntarily.
Investigators confirmed he had once moved funds for Victor Hale years earlier.
They also confirmed that some of his later payments to Beatriz had been part of his secret attempt to understand Victor's renewed interest in Isabella's trust.
Whether Adrian was helper, coward, criminal, or all three remained unresolved.
Daniel stopped calling him a friend.
He also stopped calling him an enemy.
Not until all the evidence was complete.
Ethan stayed in Marbella.
The photograph of his watch had been explained, but not the person who stole it.
That question remained open.
Daniel apologized to his brother one evening on the terrace.
"I thought it could be you."
Ethan looked toward the sea.
"If I were you, I would have thought the same."
"I hated myself for it."
"Don't."
Ethan looked at him.
"Claire built this trail because she knew evidence could be manipulated."
Daniel nodded.
"She expected us to doubt each other."
"No."
Ethan shook his head.
"She expected the people responsible to make us doubt each other."
Daniel considered the difference.
It mattered.
The second ledger triggered investigations in Spain, Gibraltar, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Companies Daniel had never heard of suddenly appeared in newspapers.
Former executives hired lawyers.
Accounts were frozen.
Board members resigned.
Victor Hale disappeared.
Richard Whitmore did not.
Daniel's father called two days after the ledger entered police custody.
Daniel stared at the name on his phone for a long time.
Then answered.
"Daniel."
His father's voice sounded older.
"You found Claire's book."
Daniel stood by the office window.
"How did you know?"
"Because Victor vanished."
"Were you working with him?"
"Once."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Did you steal from Claire's family?"
"No."
"Your payments are in the ledger."
"I paid Victor to solve problems."
"What problems?"
"The kind I was too weak to solve honestly."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Did you know he was stealing?"
"Eventually."
"And you did nothing?"
Richard was silent.
Daniel's voice became harder.
"Did you know Claire discovered it?"
"Yes."
Daniel stopped breathing.
"When?"
"The week before she died."
"Did you speak to her?"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
"That she was going to expose everything."
Daniel gripped the phone.
"What did you tell her?"
"To wait."
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid your company would collapse."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"So Claire was right."
"About what?"
"Adults choose what's important."
Richard said nothing.
Daniel looked through the glass toward Isabella.
She was painting in the new art room.
"Did you kill her?"
The question came out quietly.
His father's answer was immediate.
"No."
"Did you know someone planned to?"
"No."
"Do you know who stole Ethan's watch?"
Silence.
Daniel's heart began pounding.
"Dad."
Richard finally spoke.
"I know who had it afterward."
Daniel straightened.
"Who?"
"Not on the phone."
"Where are you?"
"Marbella."
Daniel looked toward the driveway.
"What?"
A car appeared at the gate.
Black.
Old fashioned.
Not Victor's.
The security system chimed.
Visitor.
Daniel walked toward the monitor.
His father stood outside.
Seventy four years old.
Silver hair.
A cane Daniel had never seen before.
Eleven years of silence between them.
Daniel pressed the intercom.
"Why are you here?"
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"Because Claire was wrong about one thing."
Daniel felt cold.
"What?"
"She thought Victor was the center of it."
Daniel said nothing.
Richard lifted a sealed folder.
"He wasn't."
Daniel opened the gate.
Ethan came downstairs.
"Who is it?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Our father."
Ethan froze.
Outside, Richard walked slowly toward the villa.
Isabella appeared from the art room.
She had never met her grandfather.
"Who's that?"
Daniel crouched beside her.
"Someone I need to talk to."
"Is he bad?"
Daniel looked through the glass.
"I don't know."
Isabella considered this.
Then she took his hand.
"Do you want me to stay?"
Daniel felt his throat tighten.
For years he had believed his role was to protect her from uncertainty.
Now he understood that love also meant being truthful when certainty did not exist.
"Yes."
She stayed.
Richard entered.
His eyes immediately found Isabella.
He stopped.
For one moment, the hardness left his face.
"Claire's eyes," he whispered.
Daniel stepped between them.
"Folder."
Richard handed it over.
Daniel did not open it.
"First, tell me about the watch."
Richard looked at Ethan.
"I saw it in Victor's possession after Claire died."
Ethan's face hardened.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
"Because I was afraid it implicated me."
Daniel shook his head.
"Everyone was afraid."
Richard accepted the accusation.
"Yes."
"And Claire paid for it."
Richard closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Bank records.
A handwritten timeline.
And a list of names.
Daniel recognized politicians.
Developers.
Lawyers.
Bankers.
But one name appeared at the top.
A woman.
Margaret Keller.
Daniel looked at Adrian's surname.
"Keller."
Richard nodded.
"Adrian's mother."
Daniel stared.
"What does she have to do with this?"
"Everything started with her."
Daniel's phone rang.
Adrian.
Daniel looked at Richard.
His father went pale.
"Don't answer."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because if Adrian is calling now, he knows I'm here."
The phone continued ringing.
Ethan stepped closer.
"How would he know?"
Richard looked toward the ceiling.
Toward the new cameras.
Then toward the open garden doors.
"I told you Victor wasn't the center."
The phone stopped.
A message appeared.
Daniel opened it.
From Adrian.
Do not trust your father.
A second message arrived.
Ask him where he was at 8:06 the night Claire died.
Daniel looked slowly at Richard.
His father's face had changed.
"What happened at 8:06?"
Richard said nothing.
"Answer me."
Isabella tightened her grip on Daniel's hand.
Outside, the sun began rising over the Mediterranean, flooding the lawn with gold.
Richard finally looked at his granddaughter.
Then at Daniel.
"I was with the person who took Claire's second phone."
Daniel felt the room become completely still.
"Who?"
Before Richard could answer, the new security alarm sounded.
Not at the gate.
Not at the tunnel.
Inside the house.
Mara's voice came through Daniel's phone.
"Daniel, someone just accessed Claire's old camera."
Daniel stared toward his office.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Mara's breathing was fast.
"The archive has a live connection."
Daniel looked at Richard.
Ethan moved toward the hallway.
Isabella stayed behind her father.
Daniel whispered, "From where?"
Mara answered.
"Inside the villa."
A door closed upstairs.
Everyone looked toward the staircase.
Daniel moved Isabella behind him.
Ethan stepped forward.
Richard's face lost all color.
Then Daniel's phone received one final message.
No number.
No name.
Only a photograph.
It showed the four of them standing in the hall.
Daniel.
Isabella.
Ethan.
Richard.
The picture had been taken seconds earlier.
From somewhere above them.
Below the photograph were six words.
Claire never found the third ledger.
May you like
Daniel lifted his eyes toward the dark upper corridor.
And somewhere inside the house, a floorboard creaked.
