Chapter 10 - box c17)

Daniel had never rented a private vault in Gibraltar.
Yet Box C17 had existed under his name for five years.
Ethan and Jonah opened it under the supervision of the vault manager and a local attorney.
Daniel watched by encrypted video from the villa.
The box contained no money.
No jewelry.
No valuables in the traditional sense.
Only documents.
A black notebook.
Three USB drives.
A sealed envelope.
And a photograph of Isabella as a baby.
Ethan lifted the photograph.
On the back, Claire had written:
For Daniel, if I am not there to explain.
Daniel stopped breathing.
"Open the envelope."
Ethan carefully broke the seal.
Inside were four handwritten pages.
Claire's handwriting.
Daniel recognized the way she formed her D.
He recognized the small slant in her letters.
He recognized the woman he had loved.
Ethan began reading.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then either I have finally found the courage to tell you everything, or something has happened that prevented me from doing it myself.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Ethan continued.
My father's estate was compromised before he died. I believed the missing money was simply the work of Victor Hale. I was wrong.
There are transactions connected to Whitmore Development projects.
I do not believe you authorized them.
But someone with access to your corporate structure did.
Daniel looked toward Adrian.
Adrian had gone pale.
Claire continued.
I created Isabella's trust because I needed part of the inheritance moved beyond reach. I told you it was only for tax planning. I am sorry.
Daniel pressed a hand against his mouth.
She had been protecting Isabella even then.
The next paragraph changed everything.
Victor has been trying to learn the conditions under which control of the trust could transfer. He cannot access it directly. He needs a guardian, a court order, or Daniel removed from control.
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
The plan had existed years before Beatriz.
Beatriz had simply become the newest instrument.
Ethan continued.
I think someone close to us has been giving Victor information.
I do not know who.
I left copies of the transactions on the drives.
The second ledger is hidden separately.
Do not trust the obvious answer.
Daniel frowned.
Ethan reached the final paragraph.
If Isabella is ever threatened, forget the money.
Forget the company.
Protect her first.
Everything else can be rebuilt.
I love you.
Claire.
No one spoke.
Daniel turned away from the screen.
For years he had believed the company was the legacy he was building for Isabella.
Claire had understood what he had forgotten.
A child did not need a legacy more than she needed a father.
"What's on the drives?"
Ethan asked.
Jonah connected one through an isolated computer.
Folders appeared.
Bank records.
Property transfers.
Corporate structures.
Emails.
Mara, watching remotely, began analyzing.
"This could take hours."
Daniel nodded.
"Do it."
The black notebook was stranger.
Dates.
Initials.
Amounts.
Project names.
Some Daniel recognized.
Others he did not.
One set of initials appeared repeatedly.
AK.
Everyone looked at Adrian.
He stared at the notebook.
"That's not me."
Daniel's voice was cold.
"Convenient."
"I didn't know Claire had this."
"Your initials appear seventeen times."
"Then someone used them."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"Bring everything back."
Before Ethan could answer, the vault alarm sounded.
The video shook.
Jonah turned.
Someone shouted outside the room.
Then the video froze.
Daniel stood.
"Ethan?"
No answer.
"Ethan!"
The feed went black.
Daniel called.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
Adrian stood.
"Daniel."
"Not now."
He called Jonah.
No answer.
Thirty seconds later, a message arrived from Ethan.
Safe. Fire alarm. Evacuating.
Daniel exhaled.
Then a second message.
Someone tried to enter the vault room during evacuation.
A third.
The black notebook is gone.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Only the notebook had disappeared.
Not the drives.
Not Claire's letter.
Which meant whoever entered knew exactly what mattered.
Mara called.
"I copied several pages before the feed dropped."
"Good."
"Daniel, there's something on one of the visible entries."
"What?"
"A project code."
"Which project?"
"Marbella Villa 17."
Daniel looked around his own home.
"This villa?"
"I think so."
"Amount?"
"Nine hundred thousand euros."
"Recipient?"
"Not visible."
Daniel's pulse quickened.
"When?"
Mara zoomed the captured image.
"Five years ago."
Before Claire died.
Before Beatriz entered Daniel's life.
Before Adrian's restructuring.
Daniel stared through the glass doors at the garden.
"What was purchased for nine hundred thousand?"
May you like
Mara answered quietly.
"According to the ledger notation, access."
