Chapter 12 - claire's camera)

Claire had hidden the camera inside a carved wooden shelf.

Daniel remembered buying the shelf with her at an antiques market.

She had insisted it belonged in his office.

He had teased her because it was too dark for the room.

Now Mara removed a tiny recording device from behind the carved edge.

"Five year battery replacement history," she said.

Daniel frowned.

"Someone maintained it."

"Remotely powered. Backup cell changed physically at least twice."

"By whom?"

"No log."

The archive stored short motion triggered recordings.

Most were mundane.

Daniel working.

Employees bringing documents.

Claire entering.

Isabella as a toddler climbing onto Daniel's chair.

Then, four years earlier, two days before Claire's death, the camera recorded something else.

Claire entered Daniel's office at 11:17 p.m.

She carried the black notebook.

Daniel watched silently.

Claire opened his filing cabinet.

She removed a folder.

Then she looked directly toward the hidden camera.

As if she knew exactly where it was.

She held up a page.

Mara froze the frame.

The text was difficult to read.

She enhanced it.

Corporate Resolution.

Below that, several names.

Daniel.

Adrian Keller.

Victor Hale.

And Ethan Whitmore.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Ethan stared.

"I've never seen that."

Daniel looked at him.

"Your name is there."

"I can see that."

Mara zoomed further.

The resolution concerned a company Daniel did not recognize.

Mediterranean Asset Preservation Group.

"What is it?" Daniel asked.

Adrian's expression darkened.

"A shell."

"You know it."

"Victor used companies like that."

"Was this his?"

"I don't know."

Ethan leaned closer.

"My name is listed as outside counsel."

"Did you represent it?"

"No."

Mara resumed the footage.

Claire folded the page.

Then she spoke.

The camera had audio.

"If you're watching this, I found the connection."

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

Claire looked exhausted.

"I don't know which one of them is responsible."

She took a breath.

"But the authorization traces back to Daniel's office."

Daniel felt cold.

Claire continued.

"Daniel, if you ever see this, understand something. I never thought you knowingly helped them."

His eyes burned.

"But someone used your name."

She placed the document back.

"I am going to meet Adrian tomorrow."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"After that, I will decide whether to go to the police."

The video ended.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"You met her."

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"I gave her financial records."

"What else?"

"She accused me of hiding something."

"Were you?"

Adrian did not answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

"What were you hiding?"

Adrian finally said, "Ethan's name."

Ethan stared.

"My name?"

"I found payments listed under E. Whitmore."

Daniel looked between them.

Ethan shook his head.

"Not me."

"Maybe not."

Adrian continued.

"But Claire saw them."

Daniel remembered Claire's distrust.

Her secret call to Ethan.

Her decision not to tell Daniel immediately.

Everyone around her had become suspect.

Including Daniel.

Mara opened another clip.

This one was recorded the day Claire died.

7:42 p.m.

Daniel's office was dark.

Someone entered.

The figure wore a hood.

Gloves.

They opened the filing cabinet and removed several pages.

Then they approached the shelf.

The face remained hidden.

But the person lifted one hand.

A watch reflected the light.

Daniel leaned closer.

It looked like Ethan's watch.

Ethan whispered, "No."

The figure reached toward the camera.

The footage cut.

Daniel turned.

"Where were you at 7:42 that evening?"

Ethan's face had gone pale.

"At the airport."

"Which airport?"

"Málaga."

"Proof?"

"I flew to London that night."

Jonah immediately began checking.

Adrian sat heavily.

"If Ethan was at the airport, someone wore his watch deliberately."

Daniel looked at him.

"Who had it?"

Ethan frowned.

"I told you. I lost it."

"Where?"

"At Claire's café meeting."

Everyone went still.

Daniel stared.

"You lost the watch the day you met Claire?"

Ethan nodded slowly.

"I took it off because the clasp was irritating my wrist. I left it on the table."

"Did you go back?"

"Yes. It was gone."

Daniel's mind raced.

Someone could have followed Claire.

Someone could have taken the watch.

Someone could have wanted security footage to point toward Ethan.

Jonah looked up from his phone.

"I confirmed Ethan's flight."

Daniel waited.

"Airport camera places him past security at 7:31."

The office recording happened eleven minutes later.

Impossible travel.

Ethan exhaled.

Daniel felt a wave of guilt.

Then Jonah added, "But there's a problem."

"What?"

"Ethan wasn't alone at the airport."

He turned the screen.

A grainy security image showed Ethan walking toward the gate.

Beside him was another man.

Victor Hale.

Daniel stared at his brother.

Ethan whispered, "I never saw him."

Jonah zoomed in.

Victor was several steps behind.

Watching.

Daniel understood.

"You were being followed."

Ethan looked sick.

Mara's computer sounded again.

Another old recording had been recovered.

This one came from Claire's camera one week before her death.

Claire entered the office.

She was crying.

She sat at Daniel's desk.

Then she made a phone call.

The other person's voice was faint but audible.

A woman.

Claire said, "You promised Isabella would never be part of this."

The woman answered.

"I can't control Victor anymore."

Claire looked toward the door.

"Then tell me who can."

Silence.

The woman whispered a name.

Mara increased the volume.

Everyone leaned closer.

The recording crackled.

Then the name became clear.

"Beatriz."

Daniel stared at the screen.

May you like

Four years ago.

Before Daniel had ever met Beatriz.
