Chapter 6 - claire's last drive)

Daniel had spent four years avoiding the road where Claire died.
Now he drove it before sunset.
Ethan sat beside him.
Jonah followed in another vehicle.
The road wound through hills north of Marbella, narrow in places, beautiful in the way dangerous things often were.
Daniel remembered the call.
He remembered arriving at the hospital.
He remembered Isabella, four years old, asleep against Rosa's shoulder, unaware that her mother would never walk through the front door again.
"Daniel."
He kept driving.
Ethan watched him.
"You're going too fast."
Daniel slowed.
"I shouldn't have come."
"We need information."
"Not here."
"Maybe especially here."
Daniel said nothing.
The official report said Claire's car lost traction during heavy rain.
No other vehicle was involved.
No mechanical defect had been found.
Claire had been driving home from a charity dinner.
Daniel had been in Frankfurt.
Always somewhere else.
Jonah called.
"There."
Daniel saw him point.
A gravel turnout appeared ahead.
They stopped.
Below the guardrail, the land dropped steeply toward a dry ravine.
Daniel stood beside the road.
For years he had imagined Claire's final seconds.
Now he refused.
Jonah approached holding a folder.
"I pulled archived records."
"Already?"
"I know people."
Daniel glanced at him.
Jonah opened the report.
"One thing bothers me."
"What?"
"The weather."
Daniel frowned.
"It was raining."
"Yes. Earlier."
Jonah showed him a meteorological record.
"Heavy rain stopped almost two hours before the crash."
"So?"
"The accident report repeatedly describes active rainfall."
Ethan read the page.
"Could be sloppy wording."
"Could be."
Jonah turned another page.
"Claire called roadside assistance forty three minutes before the crash."
Daniel's head snapped up.
"What?"
"You never knew?"
"No."
"Why did she call?"
"Report says she canceled before service was dispatched."
Daniel stared.
"Why?"
"No explanation."
Jonah continued.
"Then she called someone else."
"Who?"
"Adrian Keller."
Daniel's entire body became still.
"How long?"
"Seven minutes."
"Why would Claire call my financial adviser?"
"Maybe business."
"Claire hated talking about my company."
Ethan looked at him.
"Did she know Adrian well?"
"No."
Daniel corrected himself.
"I don't think so."
Jonah turned the final page.
"After the call with Adrian, Claire sent one text."
"To me?"
"No."
"Who?"
Jonah showed him.
The recipient was an unknown Spanish number.
The message contained five words.
I know what you changed.
Daniel read it repeatedly.
"What was changed?"
"No idea."
Ethan looked toward the road.
"Car?"
"Maybe."
"Documents?"
"Maybe."
"Trust?"
Daniel felt the thought before anyone said it.
Claire had created Isabella's trust six months before her death.
Adrian had helped structure it.
Daniel looked at Jonah.
"Get the original trust documents."
"Ethan can."
"I want every draft."
Ethan nodded.
"And every email Claire sent Adrian."
"If they still exist."
"They exist somewhere."
Daniel's phone rang.
Mara.
He answered.
"What did you find?"
"You're going to want to come back."
"Tell me."
"I recovered deleted audio from the hidden camera."
Daniel stared down into the ravine.
"Beatriz?"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
"She was on a call."
"With Adrian?"
"I can't identify the other voice."
Daniel's hand tightened.
"What did she say?"
Mara hesitated.
"Daniel."
"Say it."
"She said, 'If he signs the Madrid restructuring, we won't need the guardianship plan.'"
Ethan heard it through the speaker.
Daniel turned.
"What restructuring?"
Ethan's face changed.
"The documents you were supposed to sign yesterday."
Daniel's meeting.
The meeting that had ended early.
The meeting where Adrian had placed a final financing package in front of him.
Daniel had almost signed.
A disagreement between two investors delayed execution.
If they had not argued, Daniel would have signed before flying home.
"What would the restructuring do?"
Ethan asked.
Daniel stared at the road.
"Consolidate control of three development companies."
"Into what?"
"A holding company."
"Who controls it?"
"I do."
Ethan looked at him.
"You sure?"
Daniel did not answer.
Because suddenly he wasn't.
Back at the villa, Mara had the Madrid draft waiting.
They read until midnight.
On page one hundred forty seven was a clause Daniel's internal legal team had not included.
In the event of incapacity, investigation, criminal allegation, or temporary inability of the chairman to execute his duties, voting authority would transfer to an emergency management committee.
Three people sat on that committee.
Adrian Keller.
Two investors Daniel barely knew.
And no member of Daniel's family.
Daniel stared at the clause.
"Criminal allegation."
Ethan nodded.
"Broadly defined."
Jonah leaned back.
"So there are two paths."
Daniel looked at him.
"Explain."
"Path one. You sign. Then something creates a temporary crisis around you. Adrian gets corporate control."
"And Beatriz?"
"Maybe she gets Isabella."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"Path two?"
"You don't sign. Then maybe the guardianship plan becomes more important."
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
Isabella was asleep upstairs.
He thought of the fear in her eyes.
Then of Beatriz saying she would lose him.
"She wasn't just threatening her."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
"She was preparing her to believe it."
Mara's computer chimed.
She looked at the new data.
"I found a payment."
Daniel approached.
"From whom?"
"BMR Consulting received two hundred fifty thousand euros three weeks ago."
"Sender?"
Mara looked at him.
"Keller Strategic Holdings."
The room went silent.
Adrian was funding Beatriz.
Daniel reached for his phone.
This time Ethan did not stop him.
Daniel called Adrian.
He answered on the second ring.
"Daniel."
His voice was relaxed.
"How is Marbella?"
Daniel looked at the video still of Beatriz standing in the blue room.
"Interesting."
A brief pause.
"I heard you left Madrid unexpectedly."
"I had family business."
"Nothing serious, I hope."
Daniel stared at the screen.
"No."
He smiled without warmth.
"Nothing I can't handle."
Another pause.
Then Adrian said, "Good."
Daniel leaned against the desk.
"I want to finish the restructuring."
Ethan stared at him.
Adrian's tone brightened.
"Excellent."
"But not in Madrid."
"Where?"
Daniel looked toward the garden.
"Here."
"At your villa?"
"Tomorrow."
Silence.
Then Adrian said, "I'll be there."
Daniel ended the call.
Ethan spoke first.
"Tell me you have a plan."
Daniel looked at the blue room camera feed.
"No."
May you like
He turned.
"But I know where the truth is coming."
