Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Name

Victoria Whitmore had spent thirty years mastering the art of appearing harmless.
She wore soft colors.
Hosted charity luncheons.
Remembered everyone's children.
Never raised her voice in public.
When Grant's father died, Victoria became the elegant widow beside the grieving son who inherited the family legacy.
Claire had once admired her.
Victoria had never liked Claire.
She simply disguised it better than most people could.
In the early years of the marriage, Victoria's insults arrived wrapped as concern.
You work so much, Claire. Grant needs a wife, not another executive.
You're very ambitious. I hope children don't wait too long.
Men like Grant carry enormous pressure. A peaceful home matters.
After Claire stepped away from Northstar operations, Victoria became warmer.
Claire had mistaken that warmth for acceptance.
Now she reconsidered everything.
Daniel began investigating Victoria's financial connections.
It was difficult.
Victoria owned little directly.
Her wealth passed through family trusts and private entities managed by old advisors.
But Peter found something.
Seven years earlier, Northstar had acquired a small medical distribution company called Vale Biomedical.
The acquisition had been Grant's idea.
Claire remembered it.
At the time, she had questioned the price.
Vale earned less than twenty million dollars annually but Northstar paid one hundred and sixty million.
Grant had defended the deal aggressively.
Claire eventually stopped objecting.
Now Daniel discovered that one of Vale's early investors was a trust connected to Victoria.
Claire stared at the file.
"How much did she make?"
"Approximately thirty-two million."
"Did Grant know?"
"Probably."
"Did the board?"
"No disclosure appears in the minutes."
Claire leaned back.
That was not merely unethical.
It might be illegal.
"Find every transaction involving Vale."
Daniel nodded.
"Already started."
While Daniel searched, Claire met Rebecca.
The call came at 2:11 in the morning.
Daniel answered first.
Twenty minutes later, Claire entered his office through a private garage.
Rebecca sat on the sofa.
She looked exhausted.
Pregnancy made every movement careful.
Claire sat across from her.
"Does Grant know you're here?"
"No."
"Does anyone?"
"No."
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
"Is this privileged?"
Daniel answered.
"If you're seeking legal advice, potentially."
Rebecca swallowed.
"I don't even know where to start."
Claire said, "Start with Victoria."
Rebecca's hands began trembling.
"She knows about me."
"Since when?"
"From the beginning."
Claire's face remained still.
Rebecca looked ashamed.
"Grant and I started seeing each other eighteen months ago."
Claire absorbed the number.
Longer than she expected.
"Go on."
"He said your marriage was over."
Claire almost smiled.
"Of course he did."
"He said you lived separate lives."
"We shared a bedroom."
Rebecca looked down.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize yet. Tell me about Victoria."
Rebecca inhaled.
"When I got pregnant, Grant panicked. He said the press would destroy him. The board had been discussing renewing his contract."
"That part is true."
"He wanted me to leave New York."
"And the houses?"
Rebecca looked startled.
"You know?"
"I know enough."
"Grant said the company had a private executive fund."
"It doesn't."
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"I thought the apartment came from him."
"It came from Northstar."
Rebecca whispered, "Oh God."
"What did Victoria do?"
"She came to see me."
"When?"
"Five months ago."
"What did she say?"
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
"She told me the baby could never publicly carry the Whitmore name."
Claire said nothing.
"She offered money."
"How much?"
"Five million."
"For?"
"Silence."
Claire's jaw tightened.
"Did you accept?"
"No."
"Then what?"
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
"That's when Nathan appeared."
Grant's chief of staff.
Claire leaned forward.
"What did he want?"
"He told me refusing Victoria was dangerous."
"Did he threaten you?"
"Not directly."
"What exactly did he say?"
Rebecca took several seconds.
"He said people who embarrassed the Whitmore family had a way of disappearing from the company."
Daniel and Claire exchanged a look.
Rebecca continued.
"Then Northstar paid my separation package. I never asked for it. My access was shut off. Grant moved me into the apartment."
"Why didn't you leave?"
Rebecca touched her stomach.
"Because I still believed Grant would choose us."
Claire felt unexpected pity.
Not forgiveness.
But pity.
Rebecca was not the mastermind.
She was another person Grant had lied to.
"What changed?"
Rebecca looked directly at Claire.
"Three weeks ago, I overheard Grant and Victoria arguing."
"About what?"
"The money."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"Which money?"
"Grant said Nathan was demanding more."
Daniel sat forward.
"Blackmail?"
"I think so."
Rebecca nodded.
"Grant said Nathan had copies of everything."
"Everything meaning what?"
"I don't know. Victoria said something about Vale."
Claire felt the room narrow.
Rebecca continued.
"Then she said if Nathan opened his mouth, Grant wouldn't just lose the company. Someone could go to prison."
"Who?"
"She didn't say."
Claire looked at Daniel.
Vale Biomedical.
Nathan.
Victoria.
The hidden transfers.
Pieces of the same puzzle.
Rebecca wiped tears from her cheek.
"I need to ask you something."
Claire looked at her.
"If something happens when the baby comes, don't let Victoria take him."
Claire stared.
"What do you mean?"
"She made Grant sign something."
"What?"
"I don't know exactly. Some family guardianship arrangement."
Claire felt cold.
"Does Grant understand what he signed?"
"I don't think he understands anything anymore."
That sounded more true than Rebecca probably realized.
Claire stood.
"We're going to protect you."
Rebecca looked stunned.
"Why?"
Claire answered honestly.
"Because whatever happened between you and my husband is separate from someone threatening a child."
Rebecca began crying.
Claire looked away.
At five the next morning, Daniel received preliminary records from Vale Biomedical.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Dr. Samuel Knox.
Former chief financial officer.
He had left the company seven years earlier, immediately after Northstar's acquisition.
Daniel searched public records.
Samuel Knox had died six months later.
Car accident.
Claire read the police summary.
Wet road.
Loss of control.
No witnesses.
She felt uneasy.
"Why does this matter?"
Daniel pointed toward a scanned email from Vale's archives.
Samuel had written it two weeks before Northstar's acquisition.
The recipient was Victoria Whitmore's private investment manager.
The subject line contained four words.
We need to stop Grant.
Claire read the sentence twice.
Then Daniel opened the attachment.
It was corrupted.
Only one paragraph remained readable.
The current valuation cannot be justified by revenue, assets, or intellectual property. If the proposed acquisition proceeds at the agreed price, I believe the transaction may constitute deliberate transfer of shareholder funds for the benefit of parties connected to Northstar leadership.
Claire looked up.
"Samuel was going to expose them."
Daniel nodded.
"And six months later he died."
Neither of them spoke.
Then Claire's phone rang.
Grant.
She answered.
"Hello?"
His voice was unusually tense.
"Where are you?"
"Home."
It was a lie.
Grant was silent.
Claire heard traffic behind him.
"Claire."
"Yes?"
"Did you meet Rebecca?"
Her eyes met Daniel's.
Claire said nothing.
Grant's voice hardened.
"Answer me."
"Why?"
"Because someone sent my mother a photograph of you leaving Daniel Reed's office at four this morning."
Claire's body went still.
Grant continued.
"I want to know what you're doing."
Claire looked at Rebecca asleep on the sofa.
May you like
For months, she had been watching Grant.
Now someone was watching her.
