Chapter 11 - The Vote Nobody Could Stop

They left Charles's house through a service entrance.

Daniel drove.

Claire sat in front.

Grant, Victoria, and Charles crowded into the rear seats of a vehicle designed for four people.

No one complained.

Two black SUVs followed them through Greenwich.

Daniel called federal investigators.

Claire called Evelyn.

"Move the board meeting."

Evelyn sounded startled.

"Move it where?"

"Virtual. Secure connection. One hour."

"Claire, three directors are already at headquarters."

"Get them out."

"Why?"

"Because someone is trying to control the vote."

Evelyn was silent.

Then she said, "Understood."

Grant leaned forward.

"Claire."

She ended the call.

"What?"

"If the board removes me today, Nathan wins."

"No."

"That's what he wanted."

"Then we'll make sure it isn't why we do it."

Grant stared at her.

Claire continued.

"You deserve removal because of what you did. Nathan's manipulation doesn't erase your choices."

Grant leaned back.

He had no answer.

The SUVs remained behind them.

Daniel took a highway exit.

One SUV followed.

The other continued straight.

"They're splitting."

Charles looked through the rear window.

"They know where we're going."

Claire turned.

"We haven't decided where we're going."

Charles looked at Victoria.

"Someone has a tracker."

Daniel swore.

He pulled into a crowded shopping center.

Everyone exited.

They separated briefly while private security arranged replacement transportation.

Claire stood beside Grant behind a service corridor.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Grant said, "I'm sorry."

She looked at him.

"For what part?"

"All of it."

"That's too much for one apology."

"I know."

Claire crossed her arms.

Grant looked exhausted.

"I loved you."

"Past tense?"

"I still do."

"Then you have a strange way of showing it."

"I know."

"Stop saying you know."

Grant nodded.

Claire continued.

"You didn't have one affair. You built another life."

"I know."

She glared.

"Sorry."

Despite herself, Claire almost smiled.

It disappeared.

Grant's voice softened.

"I kept telling myself I could fix everything before you found out."

"That was your problem."

"What?"

"You always thought consequences were things that happened after you ran out of solutions."

Grant looked at the floor.

Claire said, "Sometimes the consequence is simply becoming the man who did it."

That landed.

Grant looked away.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"Good."

"But Rebecca and the baby..."

"They're not my responsibility."

"No."

Claire waited.

Grant swallowed.

"Would you protect them from my mother?"

Claire studied him.

"You still think Victoria is the greatest threat?"

"I don't know anymore."

"Neither do I."

Daniel appeared.

"Car's ready."

They traveled separately this time.

Claire, Daniel, and Charles went to a secure office belonging to Daniel's firm.

Grant and Victoria went elsewhere under guard.

At 4:00, Northstar's emergency board session began.

Nine directors appeared on encrypted screens.

Grant joined from another location.

Claire sat beside Daniel.

Evelyn chaired the meeting.

"This session concerns allegations of unauthorized corporate transfers, undisclosed conflicts of interest, executive misconduct, and potential violations of fiduciary obligations."

Grant looked into the camera.

"I will not contest the factual basis of the transfer allegations."

Several directors reacted.

Evelyn said, "You admit authorizing forty-eight million dollars without board approval?"

"Yes."

"Did any portion directly benefit you or people personally connected to you?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Grant continued.

"I also concealed a personal relationship with a former Northstar employee."

A director asked, "Did company money purchase housing for that employee?"

"Yes."

Another director swore.

Evelyn remained composed.

"Mr. Whitmore, do you wish to make a statement before the board considers suspension?"

Grant looked directly at Claire's image.

"No."

Evelyn frowned.

"No statement?"

Grant said, "Only this. Claire Whitmore had no involvement in these transactions. Any suggestion otherwise is false."

Claire felt something unexpected.

Not forgiveness.

Respect, perhaps, for one truthful choice.

Then Charles leaned toward Daniel.

"Something's wrong."

Daniel muted their microphone.

"What?"

Charles pointed toward one director's screen.

Martin Hale.

Longtime board member.

He kept looking away from the camera.

"He's receiving instructions."

Claire watched.

Hale's hand moved beneath the desk.

A phone.

Daniel whispered, "Could be anything."

Charles shook his head.

"Hale and Nathan were close."

Claire's attention sharpened.

Evelyn called for discussion.

Hale immediately spoke.

"I believe removing Grant today would destabilize Northstar. We should appoint an interim operational committee."

"Who would chair it?" Evelyn asked.

Hale answered.

"Nathan Cole."

The room became silent.

Evelyn stared.

"Mr. Cole is under federal investigation."

"Not charged."

Claire unmuted.

"Martin."

He looked at her.

"Yes, Claire?"

"Who asked you to nominate Nathan?"

"No one."

"You're sure?"

"Of course."

"Then show us your phone."

Hale froze.

Grant leaned toward his camera.

"Show it."

Hale became defensive.

"This is absurd."

Claire said, "You just proposed giving control of a public company to a man detained in connection with financial crimes. Show your phone."

Hale disconnected.

Evelyn stared at the blank screen.

"Well."

Daniel said quietly, "That's useful."

The meeting continued.

Seven directors remained committed to immediate action.

One wanted delay.

Hale was absent.

Evelyn prepared the resolution.

"Grant Whitmore will be suspended pending investigation."

Claire interrupted.

"No."

Every face turned toward her.

Grant looked startled.

Evelyn said, "Claire?"

Claire had spent months imagining the moment.

She realized suspension was not enough.

Grant had already admitted abusing his authority.

Leaving him technically in office gave Nathan and Victoria reasons to keep fighting for control through him.

The cleanest path was also the hardest.

"Removal."

Grant closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

"Not suspension."

Evelyn studied her.

"You're requesting a vote to terminate Grant as chief executive?"

"Yes."

Grant opened his eyes.

He looked at Claire.

Then nodded.

Evelyn called the vote.

One by one, directors voted.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

No.

Yes.

Yes.

Then Evelyn.

"Yes."

The resolution passed.

Grant Whitmore was no longer CEO.

Claire expected triumph.

She felt grief.

Eleven years earlier, she and Grant had stood in a nearly empty warehouse dreaming about what Northstar could become.

Now she had helped remove him from the company they built together.

Evelyn asked one final question.

"Until a permanent CEO is selected, who should serve?"

Claire expected herself to nominate Evelyn.

Before she could, another director said, "Claire."

She froze.

Then another.

"I agree."

Grant looked at her through the screen.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"Claire Whitmore as interim chief executive."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

"I'm not taking Grant's chair today."

"Why?"

"Because this investigation isn't over."

Charles touched Claire's arm.

His face had gone pale.

He pointed at his phone.

A message.

No sender.

A photograph of Rebecca's newborn son.

Taken through the neonatal unit window.

Beneath it were six words.

Vote again, or the child disappears.
