Chapter 15 - The Plane Waiting in the Rain

Everything that followed happened quickly.

Too quickly.

Federal agents moved toward Evelyn's home.

Claire was ordered to remain at Northstar.

She refused.

Daniel argued.

She refused again.

Then Grant arrived.

He had heard about Evelyn.

His face looked exhausted.

"You're not going there."

Claire stared at him.

"You've apparently forgotten we're divorcing."

"You're still impossible."

"One of my better qualities."

Daniel interrupted.

"Neither of you is going. Federal agents already have the property surrounded."

Claire looked at her phone.

Nathan had ended the call.

No one could reach Evelyn.

Thirty minutes passed.

Then forty.

Finally an agent called.

Evelyn had been found inside.

Alive.

Nathan was gone.

No sign of forced entry.

No weapon.

No clear evidence he had held Evelyn against her will.

But one item was missing from Evelyn's safe.

A file connected to Mercer Capital Partners.

Claire drove to Evelyn's house after investigators cleared it.

Evelyn sat in her living room wrapped in a blanket.

Claire remained standing.

"Tell me."

Evelyn looked at Grant.

"He should hear this too."

Claire did not object.

Evelyn inhaled slowly.

"I met Michael Bennett twenty-three years ago."

"My father."

"Yes."

"How?"

"Northstar."

Evelyn looked down.

"I wasn't on the board then. I ran a private investment company."

"Mercer Capital."

"Yes."

"Did you invest in Vale?"

"No."

"What did you do?"

"I helped Michael trace money."

Claire's expression changed.

"What money?"

"Northstar money."

Grant leaned forward.

"Before Vale?"

"Years before."

Evelyn nodded.

"Small amounts at first. Then larger transfers. Michael believed someone inside Northstar had created a system for moving money through acquisitions."

"Who?"

"We didn't know."

Claire stared.

"But my father found out."

"Eventually."

"Who was it?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"He never told me directly."

Claire became furious.

"Everyone keeps telling me that."

"I know."

"Stop protecting dead people."

"I'm not."

"Then give me a name."

Evelyn looked toward Grant.

"Michael believed the transfers were being authorized through executive codes belonging to Thomas Whitmore."

Grant went pale.

"My father."

"Yes."

Grant shook his head.

"No."

Evelyn continued.

"But Michael did not believe Thomas was actually authorizing them."

Claire understood.

"Someone was using his access."

"Yes."

"Victoria?"

"We suspected her."

Grant looked away.

"But shortly before Michael became ill, he told me we were wrong."

Claire stepped closer.

"Who did he think it was?"

Evelyn swallowed.

"He said the person behind the transfers had access to Thomas, Charles, Victoria, and the board."

Daniel, standing near the door, asked, "Who had that level of access?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Only a handful of people."

Claire thought of the photograph.

Her father with Nathan.

"Was Nathan one of them?"

"No. He was too young."

"Then why did my father know him?"

Evelyn looked confused.

"I don't know."

Grant said, "Nathan would have been in his twenties."

Daniel checked his notes.

"Twenty-six."

Claire felt something click.

"What if Nathan isn't Nathan Knox?"

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel frowned.

"Charles said he was Samuel's nephew."

"Charles also removed a name from my father's letter."

Grant stood.

"What are you thinking?"

Claire looked at Evelyn.

"When did you first meet Nathan?"

"Eight years ago."

"Did he prove he was related to Samuel?"

"He had documents."

"Documents can be forged."

Daniel immediately began searching.

Nathan Cole's identity had always been unusually clean.

College records.

Early employment.

Tax filings.

But before age twenty-four, almost nothing.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"This is impossible."

"What?"

"His birth record is sealed."

Grant said, "Adoption?"

"Maybe."

Claire looked toward the window.

Dawn was beginning.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Victoria.

Come to Hawthorne terminal. Alone.

Claire showed Daniel.

Grant shook his head.

"No."

Claire called Victoria.

She answered immediately.

"You have ten minutes."

"Why the airport?"

"Because there are too many ears everywhere else."

"What's happening?"

"Charles is leaving."

Claire looked at Daniel.

"Where?"

"Europe, supposedly."

"Why do I care?"

"Because he has the original Project Northstar files."

Claire's jaw tightened.

"I'll come."

Grant said, "We're coming."

Victoria heard him.

"Of course Grant is there."

The call ended.

They reached Hawthorne Private Aviation under a sky heavy with rain.

The same terminal where executives departed quietly and reporters rarely appeared.

A private jet waited outside.

Victoria stood near the gate.

Charles sat across the terminal holding a leather case.

Claire entered with Grant and Daniel.

Victoria sighed.

"I said alone."

Claire ignored her.

"What's in the case?"

Charles looked tired.

"History."

"Give it to me."

"No."

"Then why are we here?"

Charles stood.

"Because I'm leaving."

"Running."

"Surviving."

Grant moved toward him.

"Did you remove the name from Michael's letter?"

Charles did not deny it.

"Yes."

Claire stared.

"Whose name?"

Charles looked at Victoria.

She shook her head.

Claire stepped between them.

"Enough."

Charles closed his eyes.

"The name Michael wrote was not Victoria."

"Who?"

"It wasn't Thomas."

"Who?"

"It wasn't Evelyn."

"Charles."

Charles looked directly at Claire.

"Nathan."

Claire's heartbeat changed.

"That doesn't make sense."

"I know."

"My father wrote that fifteen years ago."

"Yes."

"Nathan would have been twenty-five."

"Yes."

"You said he didn't join Northstar until later."

"He didn't."

"Then how could he be behind transfers using Thomas's executive codes?"

Charles looked frightened.

"Because Nathan Cole isn't the man you think he is."

Claire felt cold.

"Who is he?"

Charles opened the leather case.

Inside were dozens of documents.

He pulled out an old photograph.

Thomas Whitmore stood at a company event.

Beside him was a younger Victoria.

A much younger Grant.

And another man.

Claire stared.

The man's face looked like Nathan's.

Almost exactly.

But the photograph was dated thirty-one years earlier.

Claire looked at Charles.

"Who is that?"

Grant took the photograph.

His hand began shaking.

Victoria closed her eyes.

Charles answered.

"Adrian Cole."

Grant whispered, "I remember him."

Claire turned.

"Who?"

"My father's chief financial officer."

Daniel looked at Charles.

"Related to Nathan?"

Charles nodded.

"His father."

Claire stared at the photograph.

"Then Nathan wasn't avenging Samuel."

"No."

"Samuel was what?"

Charles looked grim.

"Samuel discovered Adrian's system."

Grant's face drained.

"So Nathan's father stole from Northstar."

"For years."

"And Nathan continued it?"

"We believe so."

Claire looked at Victoria.

"Why hide this?"

Victoria answered quietly.

"Because Adrian disappeared before we could prove anything."

"Disappeared?"

"No body."

Claire felt dread.

"When?"

Victoria looked at Grant.

"Two days after Thomas died."

Rain battered the windows.

Charles closed the case.

"Michael believed Adrian was alive."

Claire's mind raced.

"My father knew Nathan."

"He believed Nathan was carrying messages from his father."

"Where is Adrian now?"

Charles shook his head.

"No one knows."

Claire looked at him.

"You know something."

Charles hesitated.

Then his eyes moved toward the jet outside.

Claire followed his gaze.

"Who owns that plane?"

Charles did not answer.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Claire."

Claire looked at her.

Victoria seemed afraid.

Not performatively.

Actually afraid.

"Do not get on that aircraft."

Claire frowned.

"I wasn't planning to."

Victoria looked at Charles.

"Tell her."

Charles remained silent.

Grant grabbed his arm.

"Tell her what?"

Charles pulled free.

"Your father didn't create Project Northstar only to protect the company."

"Then why?"

Charles stared through the rain.

"To trap Adrian."

Claire's phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

She answered.

No voice.

Only breathing.

Then a man spoke.

"Claire Bennett."

Not Whitmore.

Bennett.

Her blood went cold.

"Who is this?"

The man laughed softly.

It was not Nathan.

The voice was older.

"Your father asked the same question."

Claire looked at Victoria.

Victoria had gone white.

Grant whispered, "Who is it?"

Claire put the call on speaker.

The voice continued.

"Michael was always clever. Too clever."

Claire's hand tightened.

"Adrian?"

Silence.

Then a soft laugh.

Victoria backed away.

Charles closed his eyes.

The man said, "So they finally told you my name."

Claire forced herself to remain calm.

"What do you want?"

"Nothing from you."

"Then why call?"

"Because Nathan has become impatient."

Grant stepped closer.

"Where is Nathan?"

The voice answered.

"Hello, Grant."

Grant froze.

The man knew he was there.

Claire looked around the terminal.

"You're watching us."

"Of course."

Claire scanned the windows, cameras, parked vehicles.

"Where are you?"

"Closer than you've been led to believe."

The line disconnected.

At that exact moment, Claire's phone received an email.

One attachment.

She opened it.

A photograph taken less than a minute earlier.

Claire.

Grant.

Victoria.

Charles.

Daniel.

All standing inside the terminal.

The photograph had been taken from somewhere beyond the rain-covered windows.

Grant ran toward the glass.

Security moved outside.

No one was found.

Charles stared at the photograph.

"This is why I'm leaving."

Claire turned.

"No."

Charles looked at her.

"You don't understand."

"No more disappearing."

"Claire."

"You've spent decades hiding pieces of the truth because you thought secrecy kept you alive."

She pointed toward the waiting jet.

"It created this."

Charles lowered his eyes.

Grant's phone began ringing.

Rebecca.

He answered.

Claire stepped away.

Victoria moved beside her.

"Your board meeting starts in twenty minutes."

Claire nodded.

"You should go."

"I'm going."

"Where?"

"Home."

Victoria looked surprised.

Claire smiled faintly.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You don't believe me."

"No."

Victoria almost smiled.

For one moment, they were simply two women who had spent years circling each other inside a family built on secrets.

Then Claire's phone vibrated.

A notification from Daniel's office.

The divorce filing was ready.

Claire signed electronically.

Grant finished his call.

He saw her screen.

His expression changed.

"You filed?"

"Yes."

He nodded slowly.

"I expected you would."

Rain streaked the windows.

Claire looked toward the waiting aircraft.

Then her phone rang again.

This time it was Evelyn.

"The board is ready."

Claire answered.

"So am I."

She walked toward the gate.

Grant followed.

"Where are you going?"

"To finish one thing."

"You said you weren't getting on the plane."

"I didn't say that."

Grant's expression sharpened.

"Claire."

She stopped.

Daniel handed her a sealed blue folder.

Evelyn had sent the final board resolution electronically, and Daniel had printed the certified copy.

Claire looked at Grant.

His title had already been removed hours earlier through the secure emergency vote, but Northstar's public disclosure had not yet gone out.

Grant finally understood.

"This is when you announce it."

"Yes."

"At the airport?"

"You're the one who came here."

Victoria watched them.

Charles stood near the jet.

Security waited near the entrance.

Outside, another black sedan appeared through the rain.

It accelerated toward the terminal.

Grant saw it.

His expression changed.

"Nathan."

The sedan stopped abruptly.

A man jumped out.

Nathan.

His shirt was soaked before he reached the door.

Security moved.

Nathan shouted through the glass.

"Claire!"

Grant stepped in front of her.

Nathan entered the terminal.

"Don't sign anything!"

Claire stared.

"What?"

Nathan struggled against security.

"The stewardship agreement. You can't let it become permanent."

"It's already signed."

Nathan's face changed.

"No."

"Why do you care?"

"Because that's what he wanted."

Claire felt cold.

"Your father?"

Nathan stared at her.

"You spoke to him."

Not a question.

Claire's expression hardened.

"So Adrian is alive."

Nathan stopped struggling.

Grant stared.

"Where is he?"

Nathan laughed breathlessly.

"You still don't understand."

Claire stepped closer.

"Then explain."

Nathan looked toward Charles.

"Ask him why Adrian disappeared."

Charles said nothing.

"Ask him who gave Adrian Thomas's access codes."

Victoria whispered, "Nathan."

"Ask him who benefited when everyone blamed my father."

Claire turned toward Charles.

Charles backed away.

Grant moved.

"Charles."

Charles's hand reached into his coat.

Security reacted instantly.

"Hands out!"

Charles froze.

Slowly, he removed not a weapon but a small flash drive.

He looked at Claire.

"This is the rest."

"The rest of what?"

"Thomas's recording."

Claire stared.

"The tape?"

"The part I removed."

Nathan laughed.

"There it is."

Charles's eyes filled with tears.

"I spent thirty years believing I could keep this buried."

Claire held out her hand.

Charles looked at Victoria.

Then Grant.

Then Claire.

Finally, he placed the drive in her palm.

"What will I hear?"

Charles whispered, "The reason Adrian was able to steal from Northstar."

Claire closed her fingers around the drive.

"And?"

"The name of the person who helped him."

Grant stepped forward.

"Who?"

Charles looked at him.

His face collapsed with guilt.

Before he could answer, the terminal lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Someone shouted.

Glass shattered.

Security officers yelled commands.

Claire felt Daniel grab her arm.

"Down!"

A gunshot cracked somewhere outside.

Then another.

Grant shouted Claire's name.

Emergency lights flashed red.

Claire looked toward the gate.

The jet remained visible through the storm.

Its engines were running.

Charles was gone.

Nathan was gone.

And Victoria stood near the broken window staring into the rain.

Claire checked her hand.

The flash drive was still there.

Then her phone buzzed.

One new message.

From Adrian Cole.

Do not trust the recording.

Claire stared at the words.

A second message appeared.

Your father learned the truth too late.

A third followed.

If you want to know who really betrayed Thomas Whitmore, bring the drive to Geneva.

Claire looked toward Grant.

He was bleeding slightly from a cut near his temple but standing.

Daniel was calling security.

Victoria had gone strangely silent.

Outside, the private jet waited under the rain.

Claire looked at the flash drive.

Then at the aircraft.

For the first time since the nightmare began, she realized the battle for Northstar had never truly been about Grant's affair, Nathan's blackmail, or Victoria's secrets.

Those were only doors.

Someone had been moving behind them for decades.

Someone who had known Claire's father.

Someone who had anticipated the Bennett reserve.

Someone who had waited patiently for Grant to fail.

And now that Claire had removed Grant, broken the family voting structure, and forced Northstar into independent control, that person had finally stepped out of the shadows.

Grant approached.

"Claire."

She looked at him.

"Don't go."

She almost smiled.

Hours earlier, at this same airport, he had tried to stop her because he was afraid of losing her.

Now he was afraid of what she might discover.

Claire slipped the flash drive into her bag.

"I'm not running away, Grant."

"Then what are you doing?"

She looked through the rain at the waiting jet.

"Finding out what my father died trying to tell me."

Grant's face tightened.

"Geneva?"

Claire said nothing.

Victoria suddenly turned.

"Claire, if Adrian knows you're coming, you cannot trust anyone waiting there."

Claire looked at her.

"Anyone?"

Victoria's eyes shifted toward Daniel.

Only for a second.

But Claire saw it.

Daniel saw Claire notice.

"What?"

Victoria said nothing.

Claire's suspicion sharpened.

Daniel frowned.

"Victoria, what aren't you saying?"

The jet's engines grew louder.

Security officers rushed across the runway searching for Charles and Nathan.

Claire's phone buzzed one final time.

This message did not come from Adrian.

It came from a number she recognized.

Her father's old phone number.

Impossible.

The number had been disconnected fifteen years ago.

There were only five words.

Claire, Daniel knows about Geneva.

Claire slowly raised her eyes.

Daniel stood three feet away.

His expression changed when he saw her face.

"What is it?"

Claire did not answer.

Beyond him, Grant watched.

Victoria stepped backward.

Rain hammered the glass.

May you like

The jet waited.

And somewhere in the terminal, a door quietly closed.
