Chapter 13 - Claire Changes the Rules

The board reconvened at 7:10 that evening.

Claire joined from a secure hospital conference room.

Grant sat beside her.

Not as CEO.

Not as husband in any meaningful sense.

As a witness.

Evelyn appeared on screen.

Her expression was guarded.

Claire began without ceremony.

"For decades, Northstar has been controlled through personal trusts connected to the Whitmore family."

Several directors looked uncomfortable.

Claire continued.

"That structure has enabled secrecy, conflicts of interest, and decisions made to protect individuals instead of shareholders."

Grant said nothing.

"Effective tonight, I am proposing that the voting rights attached to the Bennett reserve and marital trust be placed into an independent stewardship structure."

Evelyn leaned forward.

"Claire."

"I haven't finished."

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"The trust will be governed by five independent fiduciaries. No Whitmore family member. No Bennett family member. No current Northstar executive."

One director asked, "You're giving up your control?"

"Yes."

Grant looked at her.

This was the move no one had predicted.

Not Nathan.

Not Victoria.

Not Charles.

Power only worked as leverage if Claire wanted to keep it.

She did not.

Evelyn asked, "Why?"

"Because everyone trying to control Northstar believes I can be pressured through my shares."

Claire thought of Rebecca.

The newborn.

Her father.

Thomas.

"After tonight, they can't."

Daniel placed documents in front of her.

The structure had been drafted rapidly but legally.

Claire signed.

Digital copies moved to trustees.

Her direct voting power vanished.

Grant whispered, "You just gave away six hundred million dollars of control."

Claire turned to him.

"No. I kept the value. I gave away the weapon."

He stared at her.

The board approved the governance restructuring conditionally, subject to shareholder ratification.

Then Claire addressed Victoria through a recorded statement.

"Rebecca's guardianship dispute is now irrelevant to Northstar. No person can obtain my vote because I no longer control it."

Grant watched her.

"She'll be furious."

"Good."

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

"Yes."

His expression changed.

"Where?"

He looked at Claire.

"Rebecca is coming back."

Twenty-five minutes later, Victoria entered the hospital with Rebecca.

Federal agents met them.

Victoria was not arrested.

Not yet.

Rebecca went directly to the neonatal unit.

Grant followed but stopped before entering.

Rebecca looked at him through the glass.

She did not invite him in.

He stayed outside.

Claire watched.

A marriage had ended.

Another relationship probably had too.

Grant had managed to lose two women in the same week.

Victoria approached Claire.

"You think that was clever."

"I think it was necessary."

"You weakened the family."

"Which one?"

Victoria's eyes hardened.

Claire continued.

"Because if you mean yours, Grant did that. If you mean mine, you never knew it."

Victoria lowered her voice.

"Nathan will not stop."

"Neither will I."

"You still believe Nathan is the center of this."

"I believe everyone in this family thinks they're the center."

For once, Victoria had no immediate answer.

Federal agents approached.

"Mrs. Whitmore, we'd like you to come with us for questioning."

Victoria looked amused.

"Am I under arrest?"

"No."

"Then tomorrow."

The agent blocked her path.

"We strongly recommend tonight."

Victoria looked at Claire.

"This is what you wanted?"

"No."

"Don't lie."

"I wanted truth."

Victoria smiled sadly.

"Truth is what people ask for before they understand the cost."

She left with the agents.

Grant remained near the neonatal window.

Claire walked toward him.

"Are you okay?"

He laughed softly.

"No."

"Good answer."

He looked at her.

"Is there any chance for us?"

Claire had known the question would come.

Still, hearing it hurt.

"No."

Grant closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

"I can eventually forgive some things."

He looked hopeful for one terrible second.

"But forgiveness isn't restoration."

The hope disappeared.

"You built another relationship. You lied every day. You stole from the company. You placed me at risk to protect yourself."

"I know."

"This time you can say it."

Grant almost smiled.

Claire's eyes filled.

"I loved you."

"I love you."

"That doesn't fix anything."

"No."

"I need a life where I don't have to investigate the person sleeping beside me."

Grant looked away.

"I hope you get it."

"So do I."

Claire removed her wedding ring.

She had taken it off before, in private.

This time she placed it in his palm.

Grant stared at it.

Claire closed his fingers around the ring.

"Take care of your son."

She walked away.

That should have been the end.

Instead, Daniel met her at the elevator.

"We have a problem."

Claire almost laughed.

"Only one?"

"Nathan was released."

She stopped.

"What?"

"Federal prosecutors didn't have enough to hold him on the financial allegations. Peter couldn't identify the men who took him. Nathan denies involvement."

"What about the warehouse?"

"He says he met Peter voluntarily."

"Peter was tied to a chair."

"Nathan says he didn't tie him."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Where is Nathan?"

"No one knows."

Evelyn called.

Claire answered.

"Please tell me you have good news."

Evelyn sounded shaken.

"Martin Hale is dead."

Claire's eyes opened.

"What?"

"Police found him in his apartment."

"How?"

"I don't know yet."

Daniel listened.

Claire asked, "When?"

"Approximately an hour ago."

A cold sensation moved through her.

Martin had nominated Nathan during the board meeting.

Now he was dead.

Claire looked at Daniel.

"This isn't over."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Then Evelyn said something else.

"Claire, there's a package here for you."

"At Northstar?"

"Yes."

"From whom?"

"No name."

"Don't open it."

Too late.

Claire heard paper moving.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

"What?"

"Claire."

"What is it?"

Evelyn's voice became barely audible.

"A photograph."

"Of what?"

"Your father."

Claire's chest tightened.

"With who?"

May you like

Evelyn paused.

"With Nathan."
