Chapter 10 - The Agreement Between Dead Men

Grant entered the house first.

Victoria followed.

Claire's immediate reaction was anger.

"You told me you didn't know where she was."

Grant looked at her.

"I didn't."

"Until?"

"Thirty minutes ago."

Victoria removed her coat.

"How touching. Everyone has decided to gather."

Charles remained behind the desk.

He and Victoria looked at each other.

Decades of history seemed to pass between them.

"You look terrible," Victoria said.

Charles smiled.

"You look exactly the same. That's worse."

Grant stepped toward the cassette recorder.

"What is that?"

Claire answered.

"Your father."

Grant stopped.

Victoria looked at Charles.

"You promised."

Charles laughed.

"We promised many things."

"You don't get to break this one."

"Why? Because Thomas is dead?"

Victoria's eyes hardened.

"Because Michael is dead."

Claire stepped between them.

"My father is not a bargaining chip."

Charles looked ashamed.

"No."

"Then tell me what happened."

Victoria said, "Claire."

"No."

Claire turned.

"For eleven years, this family has lied to me. About Northstar. About my father. About money. About Grant. I am done asking permission to hear the truth."

Grant looked away.

Claire pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Thomas Whitmore's voice.

Older.

Weak.

Michael, if you're hearing this later, I hope that means Charles followed instructions.

Another voice answered.

Claire's father.

She had not heard him in nineteen years.

Her knees almost gave way.

Michael Bennett sounded exactly as she remembered.

Calm.

Slightly amused.

Tom, if we're hearing this later, we're both probably dead, which makes this conversation considerably less useful.

Thomas laughed.

Then coughed.

Claire covered her mouth.

Grant stared at the recorder.

The tape continued.

Thomas said, I can't leave Northstar entirely to Grant.

Michael responded, He's your son.

Exactly.

Silence.

Thomas continued.

He has ambition without restraint. He needs someone who can tell him no.

Michael said, That isn't my daughter.

Claire felt tears sting her eyes.

Thomas answered, It could be.

Don't involve Claire.

I'm not suggesting we involve her now.

Then what?

If Grant grows into the man I hope he becomes, nothing changes. He controls the company. Claire never knows. The reserve remains hers.

And if he doesn't?

Then the marital trust gives Claire enough voting authority to force accountability.

Michael was silent.

Thomas continued.

You know your daughter.

Yes.

Would she use it selfishly?

No.

Would she protect the company?

Michael laughed softly.

She'd protect the janitor before she protected the company.

Thomas replied, That's exactly why it has to be her.

Claire wiped her cheek.

The recording continued.

Michael said, Victoria will fight this.

Victoria doesn't know.

She always knows.

Not this time.

A long pause.

Then Michael asked a question that changed everything.

And Charles?

Thomas said nothing.

Michael repeated.

Can you trust Charles?

The tape clicked.

End.

Claire stared at the recorder.

Then at Charles.

"Why did it stop?"

Charles looked toward Victoria.

"Because that's where I stopped recording."

Grant said, "You recorded them secretly?"

Charles nodded.

"I recorded many things secretly."

Victoria's mouth tightened.

Claire asked, "Were you working against Thomas?"

Charles's voice became quiet.

"Sometimes."

"With Victoria?"

"Sometimes."

"Did you help with Vale?"

"Yes."

Grant looked sick.

Charles continued.

"I drafted structures. Shell companies. Legal opinions."

Daniel said, "Fraudulent legal opinions."

Charles nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Money. Loyalty. Fear. Pick whichever makes you hate me most."

Claire looked at Victoria.

"Did you kill Thomas?"

Victoria stared at her.

"No."

"Did Charles?"

"No."

Charles laughed.

"How comforting."

Grant moved toward his mother.

"Then why did you hide his medical records?"

Victoria's face softened slightly.

"Because your father asked me to."

Grant shook his head.

"I don't believe you."

"He was dying, Grant."

"He died before his doctors expected."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

Charles answered.

"Thomas ended his own treatment."

Silence.

Grant stared.

"What?"

"His heart was failing. The medication bought time. He stopped taking it."

Grant's face crumpled.

"Why?"

Victoria whispered, "Because he was tired."

Grant turned away.

For all his failures, Claire felt his grief.

Victoria continued.

"Your father knew he might have only weeks. He spent them securing the company."

"And you forged his signature after he died."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Vale would have collapsed without the acquisition."

Grant laughed bitterly.

"You mean you would have lost money."

Victoria did not deny it.

Charles said, "Samuel discovered the forgery."

Claire turned.

"Did you kill Samuel?"

Charles looked at her.

"No."

"Did Victoria?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Charles's expression changed.

"I don't know."

Daniel scoffed.

"Convenient."

"It's true."

Claire said, "Nathan has a recording of Victoria saying Samuel was a problem."

Victoria nodded.

"I said it."

"What did you mean by make sure he never reaches the board?"

"Buy his silence."

Charles added, "Samuel wanted money."

Victoria looked at him sharply.

Claire noticed.

"How much?"

"Ten million."

"Did you pay?"

Victoria said, "Five."

"And then he died."

"Yes."

"Accident?"

Victoria hesitated.

"I believed so."

Claire stepped closer.

"Believed?"

Charles opened another drawer.

He removed an envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Samuel Knox standing beside Nathan Cole.

The photograph was dated four days before Samuel died.

Claire stared.

"Nathan knew Samuel?"

Charles nodded.

"Better than anyone realized."

Grant looked at the photograph.

"Why?"

Charles said, "Nathan worked for Vale before Northstar."

Grant went still.

"No."

"Under another name."

Daniel took the photograph.

"What's his real name?"

Charles answered.

"Nathan Knox."

Claire felt the entire investigation shift.

"Samuel's son?"

"His nephew."

Victoria sat.

For the first time, she looked genuinely shaken.

Charles continued.

"Nathan joined Northstar after Samuel died."

Grant whispered, "He planned this for years."

"Probably."

Claire looked at the photograph.

"If Nathan wanted revenge, why blackmail Grant instead of exposing everyone immediately?"

Charles gave her a grim smile.

"Because revenge wasn't the plan."

"What was?"

"Ownership."

Grant frowned.

"He can't own Northstar."

Charles looked toward Claire.

"No."

Then his gaze moved to the cassette recorder.

"But Claire can."

Claire understood before anyone spoke.

Nathan had not merely been trying to remove Grant.

He had been pushing Claire toward activating the trust.

"Why?"

Charles nodded slowly.

"That is the right question."

A noise came from outside.

Daniel walked to the window.

Two black vehicles had entered the driveway.

Grant looked at Victoria.

"Your security?"

"No."

Charles stood with surprising speed.

"Back door. Now."

Claire did not move.

"Who are they?"

Charles looked at her.

"If Nathan has finally decided to stop manipulating the succession from a distance, then those men are here for the only person whose vote matters more than Grant's."

Claire stared.

"Me."

May you like

Charles nodded.

"And if they take you alive, Northstar belongs to whoever controls your signature."
