Chapter 9 - the house with green shutters

The house was in Greenwich.

Green shutters.

White stone.

Private road.

Owned through a family trust connected to Harold Bennett.

Police searched it under warrant forty eight hours later.

Arthur was not permitted inside.

He waited in a car across the road with Marcus.

At 3:17 p.m., Mitchell came out carrying an evidence bag.

Her face told Arthur everything before she opened the door.

"What did you find?"

"Files on you."

"What kind?"

"Medical history. Travel schedules. Financial records."

Arthur felt nothing.

"And Lily?"

Mitchell hesitated.

"Audio recordings."

Arthur looked at her.

"What recordings?"

"Interviews."

"Of my daughter?"

"Yes."

Arthur opened the car door.

Marcus stopped him.

"Arthur."

He pulled away.

"What did he ask her?"

Mitchell answered.

"Whether you forgot things. Whether you yelled. Whether you drank. Whether you ever fell asleep during the day."

Arthur understood.

Capacity evidence.

They had been coaching Lily to describe him as unstable.

Mitchell continued.

"Some recordings include Victoria."

Arthur stared at the house.

"What does she say?"

"She tells Lily that if she answers correctly, you won't be taken away."

Arthur closed his eyes.

The cruelty of it was almost impossible to process.

They had made a seven year old believe she was protecting her father by lying about him.

Mitchell held up another evidence bag.

"And we found this."

Inside was a bottle.

Prescription label removed.

"What is it?"

"We don't know yet."

Arthur knew what she was thinking.

Claire.

The laboratory results came the following day.

The medication contained a drug that could dangerously interact with one of Claire's prescriptions.

Not enough to prove the drug had been given to Claire.

But enough to deepen the investigation.

Then a search of Thomas Lawson's Connecticut property uncovered archived emails.

One message from Harold to Thomas.

C is becoming difficult. V needs to keep pressure on her. R can handle documents.

Another.

If A ever discovers Northstar, medical route becomes necessary.

Arthur read them in his study.

A.

Arthur.

C.

Claire.

V.

Victoria.

R.

Russell.

The architecture of the conspiracy was finally visible.

But prosecutors still needed direct evidence connecting Harold to current crimes.

Russell's testimony helped.

The forged documents helped.

The house helped.

Arthur wanted certainty.

Not merely enough for charges.

Enough so Harold could never explain his way out.

Daniel proposed patience.

Arthur proposed a trap.

Victoria had been released pending further investigation with strict orders to stay away from Lily and the mansion.

She was living at a hotel.

Her attorney had begun claiming Arthur was using his wealth to destroy her reputation.

Arthur knew Victoria.

She hated losing control.

He sent a message through lawyers.

Arthur was willing to discuss a private divorce settlement.

He would pay.

He would avoid public scandal.

And he would not pursue the trust issue personally if Victoria surrendered any claim to Lily.

Daniel stared at him.

"She'll know it's a trap."

Arthur looked at the forged transfer.

"No. She'll think it's fear."

"Why?"

"Because she believes money is my weakness."

Naomi shook her head.

"She believes Bennett Global is your weakness."

Arthur nodded.

"Exactly."

The offer was delivered.

Victoria responded in eleven minutes.

She wanted fifty million dollars.

Arthur smiled.

Greed had survived fear.

A meeting was arranged at Daniel's office.

Unknown to Victoria, law enforcement would monitor what could legally be monitored.

Arthur entered first.

Victoria arrived wearing cream instead of red.

She looked composed.

Her cheek showed no sign of the slap now.

She sat across from him.

"You look tired."

Arthur did not answer.

Victoria smiled.

"Being a full time father difficult?"

Arthur felt rage flare.

He buried it.

"I want this finished."

"So do I."

"I'll pay thirty million."

"Fifty."

"Forty."

"Plus the Hamptons house."

Arthur pretended to consider.

Victoria leaned back.

"You should have listened to me from the beginning."

"About what?"

"About Lily."

Arthur kept his face neutral.

Victoria continued.

"She makes everything harder."

"She's seven."

"Exactly. Children are easy to shape at that age."

Arthur's pulse slowed.

"Is that what Harold told you?"

Victoria froze.

One second.

Then smiled again.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Arthur leaned forward.

"I think you do."

Victoria stood.

"We're done."

Arthur let her reach the door.

Then he said one sentence.

"We found the Greenwich recordings."

Victoria stopped.

Her shoulders stiffened.

Arthur continued.

"All of them."

Victoria turned.

May you like

For the first time, fear replaced arrogance.

Arthur knew he had finally touched the truth.
