Chapter 12 - the trap at bennett global

Arthur announced an emergency board meeting.
Publicly, the agenda concerned the internal audit.
Privately, almost everyone expected Arthur to resign temporarily.
Rumors had spread.
Victoria's attorneys claimed marital conflict.
Financial reporters heard whispers about forged documents.
Harold called Arthur the night before the meeting.
"You should protect the company."
Arthur almost admired the performance.
"How?"
"Step aside until things settle."
"And let who lead?"
Harold paused.
"The board can appoint someone."
"You?"
A soft laugh.
"I'm too old."
Arthur stared at the city lights outside his bedroom window.
"Are you?"
Harold's tone changed.
"Arthur."
"Yes?"
"Do not turn a family embarrassment into a corporate disaster."
Arthur smiled.
"Goodnight, Uncle Harold."
The boardroom filled at nine the next morning.
Naomi sat beside Arthur.
Daniel sat behind them.
Harold entered last.
He greeted directors.
Calm.
Warm.
Concerned.
Arthur almost understood how Harold had hidden for so long.
The meeting began.
Arthur spoke for twelve minutes.
He described financial irregularities.
Unauthorized transfers.
Internal security breaches.
He did not mention Claire.
He did not mention Lily.
Then Harold interrupted.
"Arthur, perhaps this is enough."
Arthur looked at him.
Harold sighed sympathetically.
"You've been under extraordinary personal strain."
There it was.
Arthur said nothing.
Harold continued.
"For the sake of the company, I propose a temporary leadership review."
A director named Peter Lang frowned.
"On what grounds?"
Harold looked reluctant.
"I have received concerns about Arthur's judgment."
Arthur leaned back.
Harold produced a folder.
Medical assessments.
Exactly as the conspiracy planned.
A doctor from Holloway Medical Review had written that Arthur displayed possible signs of severe stress affecting executive judgment.
Arthur read the document.
"Interesting."
Harold folded his hands.
"No one wants this."
Arthur looked around the table.
"Who has seen this report?"
Three directors raised hands.
Arthur nodded.
Then he placed a different folder on the table.
"This is the invoice."
Harold froze.
Arthur slid copies around.
"Holloway Medical Review received two hundred thousand dollars from Northstar Meridian."
Silence.
Arthur continued.
"Northstar Meridian is controlled by Victoria Bennett and Thomas Lawson."
Harold's face remained still.
"And its original holding company received investment capital from a trust connected to Harold Bennett."
A director looked at Harold.
"Is that true?"
Harold smiled.
"An old passive investment."
Arthur pressed a button.
The screen behind him lit up.
Bank transfers appeared.
Emails.
Property records.
Russell's testimony.
Then an audio file.
Harold's own voice filled the room.
The recording had come from Victoria's phone.
Police recovered it after obtaining a warrant.
Harold said:
"Once Arthur is removed, Lily's shares give us the threshold."
Victoria answered:
"And if he fights?"
Harold replied:
"Then remind him what happened to Claire."
The boardroom went silent.
Harold's face changed for the first time.
Arthur stood.
"You wanted the company."
Harold looked at him.
"You never deserved it."
Arthur felt something inside him settle.
There it was.
The truth stripped of manners.
Harold rose.
"Your father stole my life."
"No. He stopped you from destroying the company."
"He promised me control."
"He changed his mind when you borrowed against employee pensions."
Harold's eyes burned.
"You were a child."
"I read the records."
Arthur walked around the table.
"You spent years blaming everyone except yourself."
Harold laughed.
"And you think you're better? You didn't even know what was happening to your own daughter."
The words struck.
Arthur did not flinch.
"You're right."
Harold seemed surprised.
Arthur continued.
"I failed to see it."
The room remained silent.
"But I saw it eventually."
He stepped closer.
"And unlike you, I'm going to spend the rest of my life taking responsibility for what I failed to see."
The boardroom doors opened.
Detective Mitchell entered with federal agents.
Harold looked at her.
Then at Arthur.
Arthur's voice was almost gentle.
"You should have left Lily out of it."
Harold's mouth tightened.
Agents approached.
He did not resist.
But as they escorted him away, Harold turned.
"You still can't prove Claire."
Arthur looked at him.
"No."
Harold smiled faintly.
Then Arthur continued.
"But Thomas can."
Harold stopped.
The smile vanished.
May you like
Arthur had not been bluffing this time.
Thomas Lawson had agreed to cooperate ninety minutes earlier.
