Chapter 13 - what happened to claire

Thomas Lawson talked for six hours.
He was not motivated by conscience.
He wanted a reduced sentence.
Arthur did not care why.
He cared about the truth.
Thomas admitted the financial conspiracy.
He admitted Northstar.
He admitted recruiting Russell.
He admitted using Victoria to gain access to Claire.
Then he described the night Claire collapsed.
Victoria had gone to the mansion to recover documents.
Claire confronted her.
They argued.
Victoria called Harold.
Harold told her Claire could not be allowed to go to authorities.
Thomas had previously supplied Victoria with medication intended to worsen Claire's symptoms without immediately killing her.
The purpose, he claimed, was to make Claire appear unreliable and too sick to continue investigating.
But that night, Victoria gave Claire too much.
Arthur listened to the recorded statement in Mitchell's office.
He felt as though he were underwater.
Thomas continued.
Claire became ill within minutes.
Victoria panicked.
Instead of calling emergency services, she searched Claire's office for documents.
Claire made it upstairs.
She called Arthur.
Then Margaret.
Then Russell.
Victoria left before the ambulance arrived.
Harold ordered everyone to remain silent.
Russell helped conceal financial links.
Thomas destroyed supply records.
Victoria later approached Arthur as planned.
The marriage had been part of the strategy from the beginning.
Arthur stopped the recording.
"I need a minute."
He walked outside.
Rain fell over Manhattan.
Arthur stood beneath an awning.
He remembered meeting Victoria.
Her patience.
Her sympathy.
The way she listened when he spoke about Claire.
The way she helped Lily choose flowers for Claire's birthday.
Every kindness had become suspect.
Every memory contaminated.
Mitchell joined him.
"Arthur."
He looked at the rain.
"Did she ever love us?"
Mitchell did not answer.
That was not a police question.
Arthur almost laughed.
"I know you can't answer that."
"No."
"Neither can I."
He returned home before dinner.
Lily was building a cardboard castle in the library.
She looked up.
"Daddy."
Arthur sat on the floor beside her.
"What is that?"
"A castle."
"I can see that."
"It has three bedrooms."
"Only three?"
"And a dragon room."
"That seems important."
Lily nodded seriously.
Arthur picked up a cardboard tower.
His hands were steady.
Inside, everything hurt.
But Dr. Park's words remained with him.
Do not make Lily carry your guilt.
So Arthur helped build the castle.
After dinner, he finally opened Claire's sealed envelope from the lockbox fully.
He had read the first pages.
He had not read the final sheet.
It was addressed to Lily.
Arthur hesitated.
Lily was only seven.
He asked Dr. Park.
She recommended saving most of it until Lily was older.
But one paragraph could be shared.
Arthur sat beside Lily at bedtime.
"Your mommy wrote something for you."
Lily's eyes widened.
"When?"
"A long time ago."
"Can you read it?"
Arthur nodded.
He unfolded the page.
My Lily,
If you ever feel afraid, remember that being brave does not mean you never get scared. Brave means you tell the truth even when someone tells you silence is safer.
Arthur's voice broke slightly.
He continued.
You are not responsible for protecting grown ups from the consequences of their choices.
Lily listened.
Arthur looked at her.
"Do you understand that?"
She thought.
"Victoria said if I told, everything would break."
Arthur took her hand.
"Victoria broke things. You told the truth."
Lily nodded slowly.
"Mommy knew?"
"Your mommy knew a lot."
"Did she know you'd come home?"
Arthur swallowed.
"I think she hoped I would."
Lily smiled faintly.
"You did."
Arthur kissed her forehead.
Downstairs, his phone rang.
Daniel.
"Victoria has been arrested again."
Arthur closed his eyes.
Charges related to financial fraud, child abuse, conspiracy, and the investigation into Claire's death were moving forward.
"Harold?"
"In custody."
"Thomas?"
"Cooperating."
"Russell?"
"Same."
Arthur looked toward Lily's bedroom door.
For years, the conspirators had depended on silence.
Claire's.
Margaret's.
Russell's.
Lily's.

Now everyone was talking.
And the empire Harold built from secrets was collapsing under the weight of truth.
