Chapter 6 - behind the wall

The hidden space was in Claire's old dressing room.

Arthur had not entered it in years.

After Claire died, he closed the room.

When Victoria moved into the mansion, she suggested renovating it.

Arthur refused.

Later, without telling him, Victoria had turned it into storage.

Lily led Arthur to the far wall.

"There."

It looked ordinary.

White paneling.

Decorative molding.

Lily pointed near the floor.

"She pushed here."

Marcus pressed the panel.

Nothing happened.

Lily shook her head.

"Then here."

She touched a second section.

A soft click.

The panel opened.

Arthur stared at a narrow cavity between walls.

Inside were three boxes.

A laptop.

A leather journal.

Two bottles of prescription medication.

And a second lockbox.

Arthur did not touch anything.

He called Mitchell.

Crime scene investigators arrived forty minutes later.

Lily watched from the hallway.

Arthur stayed beside her.

One officer photographed the contents.

Mitchell put on gloves and lifted the journal.

Claire's initials were stamped into the leather.

Arthur knew it immediately.

Claire wrote constantly.

Appointments.

Thoughts.

Questions.

Sometimes grocery lists appeared beside corporate observations.

Mitchell opened to the final pages.

Arthur read over her shoulder.

March 14.

V.L. was in the house again. Russell says I am imagining patterns because I am ill. I no longer trust Russell.

March 21.

Medication tasted bitter today. Nurse said formula unchanged.

March 25.

Moved original trust papers. Lily has key. Arthur does not know because I need proof before I frighten him.

April 1.

T.L. alive. Confirmed. Victoria lied about father.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Thomas Lawson.

Claire had discovered him too.

Mitchell continued turning pages.

April 7.

If something happens to me, check Northstar.

Arthur stared.

Northstar Meridian had not been incorporated until years later.

"How could she know that name?"

Naomi, standing behind them, answered.

"Maybe the company existed before under another jurisdiction."

She began searching.

Ten minutes later, she found it.

A Cayman entity called Northstar Meridian Holdings had been created nine years earlier.

Director.

Thomas Lawson.

Arthur looked at Claire's journal.

She had found the structure years ago.

She had been building a case.

Then she died.

Mitchell lifted one of the medication bottles.

The label carried Claire's name.

Expiration date.

Four years ago.

"These should have been disposed of."

Arthur looked at the hidden wall.

"Victoria found them."

"Or put them here."

The second lockbox was opened by investigators.

Inside was no money.

Only photographs.

Claire meeting privately with Russell.

Victoria entering a car with Thomas Lawson.

Bank documents.

A printout from Bennett Global showing small transfers spread across hundreds of accounts.

Arthur finally understood Claire's strategy.

She had hidden pieces in separate places.

The wooden box contained the trust.

The wall contained the financial evidence.

If one cache disappeared, another might survive.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Trust Margaret.

Protect Lily.

Do not let Arthur blame himself.

Arthur read the final sentence twice.

Claire had known him too well.

Mitchell noticed.

"She knew what you'd do."

Arthur stared at the note.

"I left her alone with this."

"You didn't know."

"She tried to tell me."

"You still didn't know."

Arthur looked away.

That evening, Naomi found the first direct connection.

Russell Crane had approved three Bennett Foundation payments to companies controlled by Thomas Lawson.

Total value.

Six point four million dollars.

The payments had been disguised as consulting fees.

Arthur called an emergency audit.

He did not announce why.

By midnight, twenty three suspicious transactions had been identified.

At 1:20 a.m., Marcus entered the study.

"We found something on the old laptop."

Arthur had been awake for almost forty hours.

"What?"

"Video files."

"Claire?"

Marcus nodded.

Arthur sat upright.

"Play them."

The first recording showed Claire sitting at her desk.

She looked thinner than Arthur remembered.

Her voice was weak.

"If Arthur is watching this, then things went worse than I hoped."

Arthur's throat tightened.

Claire continued.

"Arthur, the money is not the greatest danger."

She coughed.

"The danger is the shares held in Lily's trust."

Arthur leaned closer.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"If they get Lily's shares and remove you from control, Bennett Global becomes theirs."

She paused.

Then said the sentence that would change the investigation.

"Russell is not the person in charge."

Arthur looked at Marcus.

Claire continued.

May you like

"Victoria isn't either."

The video ended.
