Chapter 11 - lily remembers the red dress

Memory is not a recording.
Dr. Park repeated that several times.
Arthur understood.
Lily had been three years old.
Trauma distorted details.
Colors changed.
Time compressed.
People became symbols.
No responsible investigator would build a murder case on a child's four year old memory alone.
But Lily remembered enough to open another door.
She remembered Claire lying in bed.
She remembered Victoria entering the house.
She remembered voices downstairs.
She remembered a glass falling.
She remembered Claire telling her to stay in her room.
And she remembered Victoria wearing red.
Arthur asked no leading questions.
A forensic child interviewer handled the conversation.
Arthur watched from another room.
Lily sat with a stuffed rabbit in her lap.
"What happened after the lady came?"
Lily looked down.
"Mommy got mad."
"Could you hear words?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Mommy came upstairs."
"How did she look?"
"She was crying."
Arthur pressed his fist against his mouth.
The interviewer continued gently.
"What happened next?"
"Mommy hugged me."
"Did she say anything?"
Lily nodded.
"What did she say?"
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
"She said if she got sleepy, I should call Daddy."
Arthur closed his eyes.
The room blurred.
He had been on a plane.
His phone had been off.
Claire had called.
He remembered seeing the missed call after landing.
By then, Claire was in the hospital.
The interviewer asked another question.
"Did you call your daddy?"
Lily nodded.
"But he didn't answer."
Arthur broke.
He stepped out of the observation room.
Marcus followed.
Arthur leaned against the hallway wall.
"I didn't answer."
"You were on a plane."
"I didn't answer."
"You couldn't."
"She called me."
Marcus said nothing.
Arthur's breathing became uneven.
For years he had believed Claire's final collapse happened suddenly.
Now he imagined Lily holding a phone.
Three years old.
Calling him.
Waiting.
The door opened.
Dr. Park stepped out.
"Arthur."
He turned away.
She touched his shoulder.
"Do not make Lily carry your guilt."
He looked at her.
"What?"
"If you walk into that room looking destroyed, she will believe she hurt you by telling the truth."
Arthur wiped his face.
Dr. Park continued.
"She needs to see that truth makes her safer, not that truth breaks her father."
Arthur nodded slowly.
He returned.
Lily looked at him immediately.
"Daddy?"
Arthur smiled.
It required every ounce of control he possessed.
He knelt beside her.
"You did great."
"Are you sad?"
"A little."
"Because I told?"
"No."
Arthur took her hand.
"Because I wish I had been there."
Lily thought about that.
Then she leaned toward him.
"You're here now."
The sentence would remain with Arthur forever.
That evening, investigators searched old phone records.
Claire had called Arthur three times the night she collapsed.
She also called Margaret Bell.
Then she called Russell Crane.
Russell answered.
For eleven minutes.
Mitchell returned to Russell.
This time he broke completely.
Claire had confronted him.
She said she had evidence linking Harold, Thomas, and Victoria to financial crimes.
She threatened to go to federal authorities the next morning.
Russell panicked.
He called Harold.
Harold told Victoria.
Victoria went to the mansion.
Russell claimed he did not know what happened afterward.
But phone location records placed Victoria near the Bennett property for eighty three minutes.
Medical records showed Claire suffered a severe reaction that night.
The hospital initially attributed it to complications from her condition.
Now investigators had reason to reexamine preserved samples.
The testing took six days.
On the seventh morning, Mitchell called Arthur.
"We found a compound that wasn't prescribed."
Arthur sat in silence.
"Could it have contributed to her death?"
"Yes."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"Can you prove who gave it to her?"
"Not yet."
Arthur looked through the study window.
Lily was outside with Marcus, learning to ride her bicycle again.
She laughed when the bicycle wobbled.
Arthur listened.
"What do you need?"
Mitchell answered.
"Someone inside the conspiracy who knows what happened that night."
Arthur thought of Russell.
Victoria.
Thomas.
Harold.
Then he remembered Claire's video.
Russell is not the person in charge.
Victoria isn't either.
Arthur finally understood what Claire had done.
She had left clues not because she expected Arthur to solve the past.
May you like
She expected the guilty people to turn on one another.
All he had to do was give them a reason.
