THE CHILD WHO CALLED HIM DAD / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - THE WEDDING THAT BECAME A TRAP

The official explanation for Evan and Sabrina’s continued wedding preparations was simple.

Nothing was wrong.

Publicly, they appeared together at a charity dinner. Sabrina smiled for cameras. Evan placed a hand at her waist. Entertainment journalists praised their calm response to rumors of tension.

Privately, Evan had not been alone with her since the night of the apartment attack.

Theo replaced most of the wedding security team with officers loyal to Evan. Daniel responded by hiring a second private company under the authority of the mansion trust.

The estate became divided territory.

Leah and Ellie stayed at Nora’s country house under protection.

During the day, Leah reconstructed the financial evidence lost in the hotel fire. At night, she studied the trust documents and searched for the source of the payments to Sabrina.

Ellie waited for Evan’s calls.

He called every evening.

Their conversations were awkward at first.

Evan asked about school.

Ellie answered with one word.

He asked about her favorite books.

She told him he should already know.

Then one night, he sent her a photograph of himself at eight years old. He stood in front of the Hale mansion wearing a school uniform and holding a wooden airplane.

Ellie stared at the picture.

“You had my hair.”

“You have my hair,” Evan corrected.

“I was here first.”

“Fair point.”

Slowly, they built something fragile.

Not yet a relationship.

A possibility.

Leah remained careful around him.

The past could be explained, but explanation did not erase nine years of pain.

Evan did not ask her to forgive him.

That helped more than an apology would have.

Four days before the wedding, Theo discovered that Daniel planned to hold an emergency board vote immediately after the ceremony.

The proposal would transfer executive control to a new family council composed of Daniel, Sabrina, and Evan.

“With two votes against one, they control everything,” Leah said.

“Unless Ellie’s voting interest is activated first,” Nora replied.

The trust required two conditions.

An independent DNA confirmation and Evan’s written acknowledgment.

The confirmation could be completed within hours.

The acknowledgment was more dangerous.

Once Evan signed it, Sabrina and Daniel would know Ellie had legal standing.

“We wait until the board enters the mansion,” Evan decided. “Then we file both documents.”

“The filing system is controlled by Daniel,” Theo warned.

“Not the federal registry.”

Leah looked at Evan.

“You are prepared to acknowledge Ellie publicly?”

“I should have done it the moment I learned.”

“You had no independent confirmation.”

“I have eyes.”

“That is not how legal parenthood works.”

“It is how being her father works.”

Leah looked away before he could see how deeply the words affected her.

On the morning before the wedding, Ellie disappeared from Nora’s study.

The security alarm had not sounded.

Theo’s guards remained at every exit.

Leah searched the house until she heard voices in the attic.

She found Ellie sitting beside Rosa, surrounded by old Hale family boxes.

A digital recorder rested between them.

“What are you doing?”

“Learning how to use this,” Ellie answered.

“You are not recording anyone.”

“Rosa says people tell the truth when they think children aren’t listening.”

Rosa raised her hands.

“I did not encourage her to spy.”

“You gave her a recorder.”

“I gave her something that may keep her safe.”

Leah picked it up.

“No.”

Ellie folded her arms.

“Sabrina talks around me like I’m invisible.”

“You will never be alone with Sabrina.”

“What if she finds us?”

“She won’t.”

Ellie’s expression said she did not believe promises anymore.

Rosa touched Leah’s arm.

“I hid the first recorder in Evelyn’s bracelet. It protected Evan’s inheritance for twenty-six years.”

“It did not protect Evelyn.”

“No,” Rosa said quietly. “Because no one listened in time.”

Leah looked at the recorder.

A memory card had already been inserted.

“Where did you get this?”

Rosa answered.

“From the hidden room beneath the mansion.”

“You said we needed the brass key to enter.”

“We do.”

“Then how did you get the card?”

“I removed it nine years ago.”

Leah’s pulse quickened.

“What is on it?”

“Charles speaking to Sabrina on the night she visited you.”

Leah pressed play.

Charles Hale’s voice emerged.

“Evan must believe Leah accepted the payment.”

Sabrina responded.

“What about the child?”

“If the child is his, Daniel will handle the laboratory.”

Leah stopped the recording.

Rosa looked ashamed.

“I should have given it to you sooner.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Charles threatened my family.”

“And now?”

“Now my family is gone.”

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Leah turned.

The attic door was open.

Someone had been listening.

A white envelope lay on the floor.

Inside was a photograph taken through the attic window only seconds earlier.

May you like

On the back, Sabrina had written:

Thank you for finding the missing recording.
