Chapter 10 - THE CHILD BEHIND THE LIBRARY DOOR

Ellie knew she had broken every promise she made.
She also knew adults often confused keeping children outside the truth with keeping them safe.
Sabrina had already found their hotel.
She had found Nora’s house.
She had found the secure apartment.
Ellie believed hiding at Hale Meridian would only place more people in danger.
Her plan was simple.
She would enter the mansion, leave Captain Bun near the hidden room, and return to the service vehicle before anyone noticed.
Plans created by eight-year-olds rarely survived contact with reality.
The mansion was larger than she remembered from news photographs. Every corridor looked almost identical. White flowers covered the staircase. Guests and staff moved in every direction.
Ellie kept her head down and followed the map Rosa had drawn.
The library was at the end of the west corridor.
The hidden room was beneath it.
When Ellie reached the corridor, she heard Sabrina speaking inside the library.
Daniel answered her.
Ellie stopped.
The door was not completely closed.
She removed Rosa’s small recorder from Captain Bun and pressed the button.
Sabrina’s voice came through the opening.
“Hide the DNA test results before Evan finds out who helped me.”
Daniel responded.
“You should have handled Leah years ago. Now the child can activate the trust.”
“The girl is inside Hale Meridian.”
“Not anymore.”
Ellie covered her mouth.
Sabrina continued.
“Where is she?”
Daniel’s shoes moved across the library floor.
“One of my guards found her entering the service elevator.”
Ellie backed away.
A hand covered her mouth from behind.
She kicked and tried to scream.
Rosa whispered into her ear.
“It’s me.”
Ellie stopped struggling.
Rosa pulled her into a narrow closet.
“What are you doing here?” she whispered.
“I brought Captain Bun.”
“You were supposed to stay with Nora.”
“I heard them.”
Rosa saw the recorder.
“Keep it running.”
Through the wall, Daniel continued speaking.
“If Evan hears the full recording, he will learn that his father never died.”
Sabrina’s voice became tense.
“You told me Charles would never return.”
“He hasn’t.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“Charles is contained.”
“Where?”
Daniel did not answer.
Rosa’s face changed.
Ellie understood that the information was new to her too.
A telephone rang in the library.
Daniel answered.
“Yes?”
He listened.
“Leah entered the west gate. Begin the exchange.”
Sabrina approached the closet.
Rosa searched for another exit.
There was none.
The handle began to turn.
A crash sounded elsewhere in the mansion.
An alarm followed.
Sabrina stepped away.
Daniel cursed.
“The hidden room.”
They rushed out of the library.
Rosa opened the closet.
“We need to leave.”
Ellie held up the recorder.
“We need to give this to Dad.”
“Your father does not know you are here.”
“Then we should tell him.”
Rosa led her through the library toward the east doors.
They reached the hallway just as two security guards appeared.
Rosa recognized them as Daniel’s men.
“Run,” she told Ellie.
Ellie ran toward the central staircase.
Behind her, Rosa shouted.
Guests turned.
Music stopped.
Ellie reached the second-floor balcony and saw Evan in the ballroom below, surrounded by board members and photographers.
“Dad!”
Her voice disappeared beneath the alarm.
Sabrina emerged from the west corridor.
She saw Ellie.
For a moment, her perfect public expression collapsed into pure rage.
Then she smiled and opened her arms.
“There you are.”
Ellie stepped backward.
Sabrina approached slowly.
“Your mother is looking for you.”
“Where is Rosa?”
“She went to help Claire.”
“That’s a lie.”
Sabrina’s smile faded.
“Give me the recorder.”
Ellie hid it behind her back.
“I don’t have one.”
“Children should not lie.”
“Neither should brides.”
Sabrina seized Ellie’s arm.
Before Ellie could scream, Leah appeared at the far end of the corridor.
“Let her go.”
Sabrina turned.
Leah stood alone, holding the false memory card.
“Release Ellie, and I will give you everything.”
Sabrina pushed open the library door.
“Inside.”
Ellie looked at Leah.
Leah nodded, silently telling her to obey.
They entered the library.
Sabrina locked the door.
On the floor near the fireplace lay a carved wooden walking stick.
Above them, the chandelier cast hard white light across the marble.
Sabrina held out her hand.
“The recording.”
Leah placed the false memory card on the desk.
“Where is Claire?”
“Safe for now.”
“You never intended to exchange her.”
“I intended to remove a problem.”
“Which one?”
Sabrina’s gaze moved to Ellie.
“All of them.”
She picked up the walking stick.
May you like
The handle lowered toward the floor.
“Tell Evan goodbye.”
