THE CHILD WHO CALLED HIM DAD / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - THE MAN INSIDE THE HIDDEN ROOM

The passage beneath the mansion smelled of dust and old stone.

Evan used his phone’s flashlight as he followed the sound of Sabrina’s footsteps.

The corridor ended at a steel door.

The brass key Rosa had given him fit the lock.

Inside was not a small archive.

It was a command center.

Inactive monitors covered one wall. Filing cabinets carried dates from the past thirty years. Maps marked Hale Meridian clinics, warehouses, and private properties across four continents.

At the center stood a hospital-style bed.

It was empty.

A recently disconnected medical line lay on the floor.

Sabrina stood beside a second exit.

“Where is he?” Evan demanded.

“I told you I don’t know.”

“You knew this room existed.”

“I knew Daniel brought people here.”

“My father?”

“Sometimes.”

Evan approached her.

“You stood beside me at his memorial.”

“I believed he was dead then.”

“When did you learn otherwise?”

“Two months ago.”

“The week before our engagement.”

Sabrina looked toward the empty bed.

“Daniel showed me a video. Charles was alive but unable to control the company.”

“Why keep him alive?”

“Signatures. Access codes. Information.”

“You helped imprison him.”

“I helped Daniel protect the company from a man who had become dangerous.”

“You were willing to marry me while hiding my father beneath my own home.”

“He was not always here.”

“Where was he moved?”

A slow clap came from the second exit.

Daniel entered holding a pistol at his side.

Evan stopped.

Daniel smiled.

“You always did reach the truth at the least convenient moment.”

“Where is Charles?”

“Far beyond your reach.”

“You forged Leah’s bank account.”

“I corrected a distraction.”

“She was pregnant.”

“That made her more dangerous, not less.”

Evan’s hands closed into fists.

Daniel raised the weapon slightly.

“Do not mistake anger for an advantage.”

Sabrina moved away from him.

“You said no one would be hurt today.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Leah is still alive.”

“You had Claire taken.”

“A temporary necessity.”

“You told me Charles was contained.”

“He was.”

“Was?”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

The speakers activated again.

Charles Hale’s voice filled the room.

“You should have checked the bed, Daniel.”

Daniel turned.

One of the monitors came to life.

Charles appeared on the screen, older and thinner but unmistakably alive.

Evan stepped closer.

“Father.”

Charles did not respond directly.

The video might have been prerecorded.

“If this message is playing,” Charles said, “Daniel has entered the archive without my authorization.”

A red light blinked above the door.

The filing cabinets locked.

The second exit sealed.

Daniel raised his pistol toward the monitor and fired.

The screen shattered.

The sound thundered through the underground room.

Sabrina screamed.

Evan tackled Daniel before he could fire again.

The weapon slid across the floor.

Sabrina ran for it.

Evan saw her moving but could not reach her while Daniel fought beneath him.

Sabrina picked up the pistol.

For one terrible moment, she aimed it toward Evan.

Then she pointed it at Daniel.

“You said we would control the trust together.”

Daniel laughed.

“You were useful because Evan trusted you.”

“You promised me half.”

“I promised you whatever kept you obedient.”

Sabrina’s hand shook.

Daniel struck Evan and tried to rise.

The main door opened.

Theo entered with two officers.

“Drop it.”

Sabrina looked toward the officers, then at Evan.

Her white dress was torn at one sleeve. The woman who had controlled every public expression now appeared completely lost.

She lowered the pistol.

Theo secured Daniel while the officers restrained Sabrina.

Evan returned to the monitor.

A second screen activated.

Charles continued speaking.

“Evan, if you are present, listen carefully. Daniel did not create this conspiracy. He inherited it.”

“From whom?” Evan demanded, although the recording could not answer.

“The original trust contains a second beneficiary. Daniel has spent years ensuring that person remains hidden.”

A photograph appeared.

It showed two infants lying beside Evelyn Hale in a hospital room.

Evan stared at it.

His mother had given birth to twins.

He had never known.

Charles’s voice continued.

“Your brother survived.”

The screen went black.

Theo approached.

“We need to leave. Leah is being taken to the hospital.”

Evan forced himself away from the photograph.

“Did you find Claire?”

“Yes. She is alive.”

“Rosa?”

“Safe.”

“Daniel?”

“In custody.”

Evan looked at Sabrina.

She had begun to cry, but he felt no sympathy.

“Take them both.”

As Theo led them out, Sabrina turned toward Evan.

“Daniel isn’t the man on every recording.”

“What are you talking about?”

“He used someone else to give the orders.”

“Who?”

May you like

Sabrina smiled through her tears.

“Ask Leah why Charles chose her.”
