Chapter 11 - THE MOMENT THE TRUTH STRUCK THE MARBLE
Leah moved in front of Ellie.
“You invited me here because you’re afraid of an eight-year-old.”
Sabrina held the walking stick with both hands.
“I am afraid of what her name activates.”
“She is not a clause in a trust.”
“To you, perhaps.”
“To Evan?”
Sabrina’s jaw tightened.
“Evan would destroy everything for the idea of a family.”
“Then you never knew him.”
“I know him better than you do.”
“You know the man he became after you convinced him I abandoned him.”
Sabrina glanced toward the library clock.
“You have spent nine years imagining yourself as the victim.”
“You forged the letter.”
“Charles dictated most of it.”
“You created the account.”
“Daniel created it.”
“You visited me.”
“That was my contribution.”
Ellie moved quietly behind the armchair.
Her recorder continued capturing every word.
Leah needed Sabrina to keep talking.
“What did Charles promise you?”
“The life I deserved.”
“You were already wealthy.”
“Wealth is not control.”
“And marrying Evan gives you control?”
“Evan signs what he believes protects the company.”
“Did he sign the mansion deed?”
Sabrina smiled.
“He handed me the phone.”
“You stole his home.”
“I protected my future.”
Leah heard footsteps outside the library.
She hoped it was Theo.
Sabrina heard them too.
She raised the stick.
“Give me the real recording.”
“I don’t have it.”
“Ellie does.”
Leah shifted to block her view.
Sabrina moved forward.
“Get out of my way.”
“No.”
Sabrina swung the stick toward the armchair.
Leah grabbed it.
They struggled.
Ellie cried out.
Leah managed to twist the stick away, but Sabrina shoved her against the desk. Documents fell to the floor.
The library door shook as someone tried to open it from outside.
Sabrina reached for the stick again.
Leah stepped between her and Ellie.
The blow came quickly.
Leah fell.
For several seconds, Ellie could hear nothing but the ringing inside her own head.
Sabrina stood over Leah, breathing hard.
The stick remained lowered at her side.
Ellie ran toward her mother.
“Mom?”
Leah opened her eyes but could not rise.
The library doors burst open.
Evan rushed inside.
Theo and several guards were behind him, but Daniel’s security team blocked the entrance, creating chaos in the corridor.
Evan saw Sabrina.
He saw the stick.
He saw Leah on the floor.
“Put that down. Right now.”
Ellie ran to him.
“Dad, she hurt Mom.”
The word stopped him.
He looked down at her.
“Why do you call me Dad?”
Leah forced herself onto one elbow.
“Because Ellie is your daughter.”
Sabrina released the stick.
“She’s lying.”
Ellie removed the recorder from her cardigan.
“I heard her talking.”
She pressed play.
Sabrina’s voice filled the room.
“Hide the DNA test results before Evan finds out who helped me.”
Daniel’s voice followed.
“You should have handled Leah years ago. Now the child can activate the trust.”
Daniel stepped backward in the corridor.
Theo turned toward him.
Sabrina lunged for the recorder.
Evan caught her wrist.
“Don’t touch her.”
Sabrina tried to pull free.
“You have no idea what that girl’s existence will do.”
“I know exactly what your existence has done.”
Ellie pressed another button.
Daniel’s recorded voice returned.
“If Evan hears the full recording, he will learn that his father never died.”
Every person in the doorway became silent.
Daniel moved first.
He pushed one of the guards into Theo and ran toward the main staircase.
Theo followed.
Sabrina stopped struggling.
Evan stared at her.
“Is my father alive?”
“I don’t know.”
“You knew enough to hide it.”
“I knew what Daniel told me.”
“What did he tell you?”
“That Charles was contained.”
Evan’s expression became cold.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
A weak sound came from Leah.
Evan released Sabrina and knelt beside her.
“Stay with me.”
Leah tried to point toward the northern wall.
“The room.”
Rosa appeared in the doorway with Nora.
“Daniel opened it,” Rosa said.
“Where is he going?” Evan asked.
“To destroy whatever Charles left behind.”
The mansion lights shut off.
Emergency locks sealed the doors.
Guests began shouting in the ballroom.
A voice came through the hidden speakers.
“Welcome home, Evan.”
Evan looked upward.
He knew the voice.
He had spent three years trying to forget it.
“Father?”
The northern wall of the library moved.
A narrow doorway opened.
Someone stood in the darkness beyond it.
Before the figure stepped forward, Sabrina kicked the recorder from Ellie’s hand and ran through the hidden doorway.
The wall began to close behind her.
Evan handed Leah to Nora.
“Call the ambulance.”
