THE CHILD WHO CALLED HIM DAD / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE MANSION

Rosa refused to go to a hospital.

She believed Daniel controlled too many private medical facilities, including the clinic where she had been held.

Theo arranged for a trusted physician to examine her inside the apartment.

While they waited, Rosa told them what she knew.

Three years earlier, Charles Hale’s private plane had disappeared over the Atlantic.

Daniel had identified personal effects recovered from the wreckage. A sealed medical report claimed that DNA confirmed Charles was among the dead.

No independent family member had seen the report.

Rosa had been working at the mansion on the night Daniel arrived with the news.

“Charles had left instructions,” she said. “If anything happened to him, I was to clear the northern archive.”

“What was inside?” Evan asked.

“Records about your mother, the trust, and Daniel’s payments.”

“Why didn’t you give them to me?”

“I tried. Sabrina stopped me before I reached you.”

Leah sat beside Ellie, who had fallen asleep against her shoulder.

“What did Sabrina do?”

“She said you were unstable after your father’s death. She claimed Daniel had temporary legal authority over the estate.”

Evan looked at Nora.

“Did he?”

“For thirty days,” Nora answered. “Not three years.”

Rosa continued.

“Sabrina moved the archive into a private room beneath the mansion. I kept the only physical key.”

“The room has no electronic access?” Theo asked.

“Charles trusted locks more than computers.”

“Then why didn’t Daniel force you to open it?”

“He believed the key was destroyed.”

Rosa looked at Ellie.

“I hid it inside the lining of the child’s rabbit.”

Ellie’s eyes opened immediately.

“You cut Captain Bun?”

Rosa blinked.

“I repaired him.”

Ellie examined the toy and discovered a small stitched line beneath one ear.

Rosa smiled faintly.

“You were three. Leah brought you to a legal assistance office while I was delivering the original DNA report.”

Leah remembered an elderly volunteer who had entertained Ellie in the waiting room.

“That was you?”

“I wanted to see Charles’s granddaughter.”

Evan held the brass key.

“You knew the DNA result.”

“Yes.”

“Did my father?”

Rosa hesitated.

“He ordered the test.”

Leah stood.

“I arranged that test.”

“You arranged the public request. Charles ordered a second analysis using the same samples.”

“Why?”

“He wanted proof before changing the trust.”

“Then he knew Ellie existed.”

“Yes.”

“And he did nothing?”

“He told Sabrina to keep you away from Evan.”

The admission cut deeper than Leah expected.

Even after discovering the truth, Charles had treated Ellie as a problem to be controlled.

Evan closed his hand around the key.

“What is in the room?”

“Enough to remove Daniel from the company.”

“Then we go tonight.”

Nora objected.

“The mansion staff report to Sabrina. She has taken control of the wedding preparations.”

“It is still my house,” Evan said.

Rosa’s expression darkened.

“Not according to the document Daniel filed yesterday.”

Theo checked his tablet.

A transfer deed had been registered that morning. The Hale mansion was now owned by a trust controlled jointly by Daniel and Sabrina.

The deed carried Evan’s electronic signature.

“I never signed this.”

“The system says you did,” Theo replied.

Leah examined the authentication record.

The signature had been authorized using Evan’s biometric key during a board dinner two weeks earlier.

“Were you separated from your phone?” she asked.

“For ten minutes.”

“Sabrina?”

“She said her phone had died.”

Leah turned the tablet toward him.

“She used your access.”

Evan stared at the fraudulent deed.

“My wedding is supposed to take place in a house they stole from me.”

“Then cancel it,” Leah said.

Rosa shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Sabrina believes the wedding will activate her rights under the trust. If Evan cancels now, Daniel will know we found the amendment.”

“What are you suggesting?” Evan asked.

“Let them continue.”

Leah understood.

“The wedding becomes a trap.”

Rosa nodded.

“We enter the hidden room while Sabrina is focused on the ceremony.”

Evan looked toward Ellie.

“My daughter will not be anywhere near that mansion.”

Ellie sat up.

“You said I was your daughter.”

The word struck him again.

Leah placed a hand on Ellie’s shoulder.

“You are not going.”

Ellie looked at the brass key.

“Captain Bun is already involved.”

Theo’s phone sounded.

He listened to a message, then faced the group.

“The doctor we called was intercepted downstairs. Someone sent another physician in his place.”

“Where is the real doctor?” Evan asked.

“In the parking garage. Unconscious but alive.”

A sound came from the apartment’s ventilation system.

A soft mechanical hiss.

Theo rushed toward the control panel.

Rosa covered her mouth.

“They found us.”

Evan lifted Ellie into his arms while Leah helped Rosa stand.

Theo opened the emergency exit.

As they entered the stairwell, a voice came through Evan’s phone.

Sabrina.

“You should have brought Leah to me when I asked.”

Evan stopped.

“How did you get this number?”

“I have always had access to your numbers.”

“What do you want?”

“The bracelet, the key, and the child’s DNA report.”

Evan looked at Leah.

May you like

Sabrina continued.

“Bring them to the mansion on our wedding day, or the next fire will not begin in an empty hotel room.”
