Chapter 14 - THE BOARDROOM CONFESSION

Daniel’s emergency board meeting proceeded despite his arrest.
His attorneys argued that the charges were unproven and that Hale Meridian needed temporary leadership while Evan faced a public paternity scandal.
The directors gathered in the company’s forty-eighth-floor boardroom.
Daniel appeared by secure video from federal custody.
Sabrina did not attend.
Her attorney had advised silence.
Leah arrived beside Evan with a bandage near her hairline and every financial document she had managed to reconstruct.
Reporters filled the street below.
Inside the boardroom, Daniel smiled from the screen.
“This company cannot be controlled through emotion,” he began. “Mr. Hale has acknowledged a child based on documents supplied by a woman with a direct financial interest.”
Evan did not react.
Daniel continued.
“Until the investigation concludes, I propose that executive authority transfer to the independent council.”
A director raised her hand.
“Mr. Cross, you were arrested in possession of fraudulent trust records.”
“Allegedly fraudulent.”
Leah placed a folder on the table.
“The documents are real.”
The room became silent.
Daniel’s smile widened.
“Thank you, Ms. Carter.”
“The trust carrying my name was created by Charles Hale,” Leah continued. “But it was not created to pay me for revealing Ellie.”
She displayed the original transaction code.
“The $5 million did not come from Hale Meridian.”
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
“It came from an account belonging to Evelyn Hale.”
Evan looked at her.
Leah had discovered the transfer source only an hour earlier.
“The payment was a protection fund,” she explained. “It becomes available if Evan recognizes a child because that recognition proves someone previously prevented him from knowing the child existed.”
Nora distributed copies of Evelyn’s handwritten instructions.
The trust was not compensation.
It was evidence preservation.
Once activated, it released sealed archives documenting interference with Evan’s family relationships.
Thousands of files appeared on the boardroom screens.
Payments to laboratories.
Payments to private clinics.
Payments to security officers.
Payments to Sabrina.
Payments to Daniel.
Daniel leaned toward his camera.
“These files can be fabricated.”
“The authentication key belongs to Evelyn Hale,” Nora said.
“She is dead.”
A new video window opened.
Rosa Bennett appeared from a protected federal location.
“I witnessed Evelyn create the key.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
Rosa described Charles’s threats, Sabrina’s visit to Leah, and the suppressed DNA result.
Then Theo played Ellie’s recording.
Sabrina’s voice filled the boardroom.
“Hide the DNA test results before Evan finds out who helped me.”
Daniel’s response followed.
“You should have handled Leah years ago.”
Daniel’s attorney attempted to end the video connection.
Federal officers prevented him.
Leah presented the final document.
“This is the account that received the original $250,000 payment in my name.”
The authorization history appeared.
Sabrina had approved the transfer.
Daniel had approved its removal.
A third signature belonged to Arthur Vale.
The account had been created using an identification file stolen from Hale Meridian’s employee records.
Every step was documented.
Daniel stopped smiling.
“You believe exposing me protects the company?” he asked Evan. “Your father built Hale Meridian through secrets. Remove them, and half the organization collapses.”
“Then half of it deserves to collapse,” Evan answered.
“You sound like your mother.”
“I hope so.”
The board voted.
Daniel was removed from every position.
His trustee authority was revoked.
The directors appointed an independent committee led by Leah’s audit firm.
Evan remained chief executive under external oversight.
Ellie’s voting interest was formally protected.
For the first time in nine years, Daniel Cross had no legal control over the Hale family.
Before officers disconnected him, he leaned close to the camera.
“Sabrina will speak.”
Evan stared back.
“She already has.”
“Not about Leah.”
Daniel looked directly at her.
“Ask who selected Leah for the internship where she met you.”
The connection ended.
Later that afternoon, Sabrina requested to speak with investigators.
Her confession lasted four hours.
She admitted forging the breakup letter.
She admitted threatening Leah.
She admitted suppressing the paternity report.
She admitted using Evan’s phone to transfer the mansion.
She denied arranging the hotel fire.
She denied abducting Rosa.
She claimed Daniel had controlled those operations.
The evidence supported most of her confession.
It was enough to charge her.
It was enough to free Claire.
It was enough to clear Leah publicly.
By sunset, news channels replaced the story of a manipulative former employee with footage of Sabrina and Daniel entering federal court.
Ellie watched from the hospital bed beside Leah.
“Does this mean it’s over?” she asked.
Leah looked at Evan.
The simple answer would have been yes.
They had won.
Sabrina had fallen.
Daniel had lost the company.
Ellie had been recognized.
Leah’s name had been cleared.
But the hidden room was empty.
Charles was still missing.
Evan had a brother no one could locate.
And someone had sent the first package before Nora contacted Leah.
“No,” Leah said gently. “It means we’re safe enough to find the rest.”
That night, Evan returned to the mansion with Theo.
The library had been sealed by investigators.
On the marble floor, beneath the place where Leah had fallen, Theo discovered a loose tile.
A black envelope had been hidden beneath it.
The envelope was addressed to Ellie.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Charles Hale standing outside Leah’s apartment three days before the package arrived.
