Chapter 9 - the officer who opened the door
The station remained locked down until sunrise.
Every officer, technician, and civilian employee was questioned. Security footage showed a person wearing a police raincoat entering through the rear service door moments before the lights failed.
The intruder knew the camera positions.
He also knew the emergency power system.
Detective Bell reviewed the footage frame by frame.
“He used an authorized access card.”
“Whose?” Adrian asked.
Bell enlarged the entry log.
Officer Daniel Reyes.
Reyes was immediately separated from Chloe and taken into custody.
He did not resist.
Adrian stood outside the interview room while Bell questioned him.
“My card was in my pocket,” Reyes said.
“Then explain the access log.”
“I can’t.”
“You were beside Chloe when the lights went out.”
“I moved toward the corridor when the alarm sounded. She hid before I returned.”
“Who knew she was in that room?”
“Everyone involved in the case.”
Bell placed a photograph of the intruder on the table.
The face was hidden, but the person’s height and build resembled Reyes.
“You drove the recovered phone to the station,” Bell continued. “You handled the evidence. You knew about the memory device.”
Reyes looked toward the observation glass.
“Colonel Samson is watching, isn’t he?”
Adrian entered.
Reyes leaned forward. “Someone wants you to doubt every person helping you.”
“You expect me to trust you?”
“No. I expect you to examine the timing.”
Adrian waited.
“The access log registered my card at 4:12,” Reyes said. “At 4:12, I was speaking to you in the hallway.”
Adrian remembered.
Reyes had been beside him when the lights failed.
“Then someone cloned the card.”
“Exactly.”
Bell remained skeptical. “Why your card?”
“Because I was assigned to Chloe.”
Adrian understood.
The intruder’s objective had not been only the memory device. Framing Reyes would remove one of the few officers Chloe trusted.
“Who assigned you?” Adrian asked.
Reyes looked at Bell.
“The request came through federal coordination.”
“From which office?”
“Deputy Director Hale’s office.”
Bell checked the assignment record.
The authorization had arrived electronically twenty minutes after the first emergency call.
Hale’s people had entered the investigation before Adrian reached home.
Reyes was released from the interview room but removed from active evidence handling until his identity credentials could be reset.
Meanwhile, technicians began opening the memory device.
It contained encrypted engineering files, financial records, and a video statement from Dr. Elara Vale.
Vale appeared exhausted but composed.
“If this recording is being viewed,” she said, “the Atlas extraction has failed or my location has been compromised.”
She described a classified program called Silent Compass. Northstar Aeronautics had developed remote navigation controls under a government contract intended to recover hijacked military aircraft.
The technology was later expanded without legal oversight.
A hidden command authority could redirect aircraft, alter cockpit information, and override pilot input.
“General Marcus Voss oversaw field testing,” Vale said. “Deputy Director Warren Hale authorized operational deployment.”
Adrian watched without blinking.
Vale continued.
“They have caused at least three incidents. Each was blamed on weather, equipment failure, or pilot error.”
Images appeared beside her.
Adrian recognized one aircraft.
Flight Kestrel Seven.
Twelve years earlier, Kestrel Seven crashed during a training mission. Everyone aboard was killed, including Adrian’s older brother, Captain Nathan Samson.
The official investigation blamed spatial disorientation.
Vale looked directly into the camera.
“Kestrel Seven was the first successful remote diversion.”
Adrian felt the room narrow around him.
His brother had not died in an accident.
He had been part of an experiment.
A final file opened automatically.
It contained a personnel list associated with Silent Compass.
General Voss.
Deputy Director Hale.
Several Northstar executives.
And one name Adrian never expected to see.
Samantha Samson.
Her status was listed as CIVILIAN ASSET 17.
