THE CAMERA CAUGHT EVERYTHING / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - the room behind the garage

By midnight, the rain had weakened to a steady whisper against the roof.

The police transformed the Samson home into a controlled evidence site. Officers photographed the garage, checked windows, and collected electronic devices.

Chloe was taken to a neighbor’s house with Officer Reyes’s partner. Adrian did not want her to hear the interrogations.

Samantha sat at the dining table while Detective Mara Bell reviewed the recovered recordings.

“You contacted General Voss fourteen times during the past month,” Bell said.

Samantha stared at the table. “He contacted me first.”

“How?”

“At a charity dinner.”

Adrian stood across the room, silent.

Bell continued. “What did he want?”

“He asked questions about Adrian’s schedule. I assumed it was normal.”

“Did he ask you to install surveillance equipment?”

“No.”

“Did he give you money?”

Samantha hesitated.

Adrian finally spoke. “Answer her.”

“Not directly.”

Bell placed a bank statement on the table. “A consulting company deposited $75,000 into an account in your name.”

Adrian’s face showed no visible reaction, but the betrayal landed heavily.

“We were in debt,” Samantha said. “The renovations, Chloe’s school, my mother’s medical bills…”

“We were not in debt,” Adrian said.

“You were gone constantly. You didn’t know what anything cost.”

“I reviewed every household account.”

“Not the private account.”

The room became still.

Bell leaned forward. “What private account?”

Samantha closed her eyes.

Gertrude had convinced her to invest in a luxury property development. Samantha had borrowed money against assets Adrian did not know she had pledged. The development collapsed. Instead of admitting the loss, she accepted money from a company connected to Voss.

“At first, he only wanted travel dates,” Samantha said. “Then he wanted photographs of Adrian’s secure phone. After that, he asked me to confirm whether Adrian brought anything home from the base.”

“And tonight?” Bell asked.

“He said the military needed to recover an unauthorized device.”

“You believed that?”

“I wanted to believe it.”

Adrian walked toward the garage.

Bell followed him. “Where are you going?”

“Chloe said the intruder entered through the laundry room.”

The laundry room connected the kitchen to the garage. It contained a washing machine, storage shelves, and a narrow utility closet.

Adrian examined the floor.

Mud marked the tiles, but one print ended directly in front of the utility closet.

He opened the door.

Behind cleaning supplies and folded towels was a section of wall with newer paint.

“This wasn’t like this last month,” Adrian said.

An officer brought a scanner.

The wall was hollow.

They removed a thin panel and discovered a narrow maintenance passage leading behind the garage storage area. The passage had originally been part of the house’s ventilation system, but someone had widened it.

Inside were cables, two small cameras, and a portable transmitter.

The surveillance system had been active for months.

Detective Bell found a memory module.

“Someone has been watching the garage and kitchen.”

Adrian examined the transmitter.

Military-grade encryption protected its internal files.

Samantha appeared in the doorway.

“I didn’t know that was there.”

Adrian looked at her. “Who had access to the house?”

“My family. Contractors. Your officers sometimes came by.”

“General Voss?”

Her silence answered him.

“He visited once,” Samantha admitted. “You were overseas.”

“When?”

“Last October.”

“That was not once.”

“What do you mean?”

Adrian pointed to the dust around the hidden panel. “This passage has been used recently.”

A technician connected the memory module to an isolated computer.

Most files had been erased, but one image survived.

The photograph showed General Voss standing in the garage two weeks earlier.

Beside him was a second man whose face was hidden by the angle.

Voss held the silver access key.

Adrian stared at the date.

“That is impossible.”

Bell looked at him. “Why?”

“The key in that photograph had not been issued yet.”

The technician enlarged the image.

The second man wore a dark suit and an identification badge clipped to his belt. Only part of the badge was visible.

The letters DOD could be read above a blue stripe.

Department of Defense.

Bell pointed to an object on the workbench.

“What is that?”

Adrian leaned closer.

It was a sealed flight manifest bearing his signature.

The manifest belonged to the next stage of Operation Atlas.

“I have never seen that document,” Adrian said.

“But that is your signature.”

“It was copied.”

The technician opened another recovered file.

This one contained a short video.

Samantha entered the garage after Voss left. She removed the forged manifest from the workbench and placed it inside a kitchen drawer.

Then she looked directly at the hidden camera.

“I did what you asked,” she said. “Now keep your promise and leave Chloe out of it.”

A different voice replied from behind the camera.

“Chloe was never outside it.”
