Chapter 3 - the missing key

The police secured the property within minutes.

Adrian refused to enter until Officer Reyes confirmed every room had been searched. Chloe remained wrapped in a blanket inside the patrol car, where a female officer stayed beside her.

Samantha stood beneath the porch roof with rainwater dripping from her hair.

“You’re treating me like a criminal,” she said.

Adrian looked at the open garage.

“You used our daughter to pull me away from a restricted facility.”

“That is not what happened.”

“Then explain the recording.”

“I already told you. General Voss said he was evaluating whether your family could be manipulated.”

“And you agreed to help him?”

“He said it was authorized.”

Gertrude was placed in the rear of a police car. She watched them through the rain-streaked window with an expression that held no regret.

Vivian, Lauren, and Paige spoke quietly to separate officers.

The sisters had arrived together, but their stories had already begun to separate.

Vivian claimed Gertrude had called them because Samantha was having a marital crisis.

Lauren insisted she thought they were attending a surprise dinner.

Paige said almost nothing.

Officer Reyes emerged from the garage carrying a small evidence bag.

“The safe was opened without force,” he said. “Do you know who had the code?”

“Only Samantha and me.”

Samantha looked away.

Adrian stepped closer. “Who opened it?”

“No one.”

“The door is open.”

“I don’t know how.”

Reyes held up the evidence bag. Inside was a thin metallic strip.

“This was attached beneath the keypad. It appears capable of capturing entry codes.”

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

“Someone installed it before tonight.”

Reyes nodded. “We also found marks near the back door. There may have been another person inside the house.”

Samantha folded her arms. “Adrian has enemies. He never tells me anything about them.”

“You knew enough to mention the Atlas flight.”

“I repeated what Voss told me.”

“Why was he speaking to you at all?”

Samantha’s mouth opened, but she produced no answer.

A police technician approached with a laptop. “We recovered part of the doorbell archive. The camera stopped transmitting, but the internal memory continued recording for several minutes.”

He showed them a grainy clip.

Samantha stood on the porch with her phone pressed to her ear.

Gertrude was behind her.

A distorted voice came through the speaker.

“Once Samson enters the house, send the girl outside. He will focus on her. That gives the retrieval team six minutes.”

Samantha lowered her voice. “You promised no one would touch Chloe.”

“No one needs to touch her. Fear is enough.”

The clip ended.

Adrian stared at Samantha.

“You sent her outside during a storm so someone could search the house.”

“She was only supposed to stand on the porch.”

“She was in the driveway.”

“My mother changed the plan.”

Gertrude shouted from inside the police car. “Do not blame this on me!”

Samantha turned toward her. “You pulled Chloe away from the door.”

“She was ruining everything.”

Adrian took one step toward the vehicle.

Officer Reyes blocked his path.

“Colonel.”

Adrian stopped, but his voice became colder.

“What did she mean?”

Samantha looked exhausted now. “Chloe saw someone in the garage.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did she recognize him?”

Samantha shook her head.

A small voice came from behind them.

“He had a silver ring.”

Chloe had left the patrol car and was standing beside the female officer. The blanket covered her shoulders.

Adrian immediately went to her.

“You should stay warm.”

“I need to tell you.”

He knelt. “Tell me what you saw.”

“A man came through the laundry-room door. Grandma told me he was fixing something.”

“What did he look like?”

“He wore a dark coat. He had a silver ring with a bird on it.”

Adrian had seen that ring before.

General Voss wore it during formal ceremonies. It carried the insignia of an elite aviation unit that had been dissolved twelve years earlier.

“Was it General Voss?” Adrian asked.

Chloe looked uncertain.

“I only saw his hand.”

Samantha’s phone rang inside the evidence pouch.

Everyone turned toward the sound.

The screen displayed an unknown number.

Officer Reyes answered on speaker.

No one spoke at first.

Then the same male voice from the recording said, “Colonel Samson, you have something that does not belong to you.”

Adrian looked at the empty safe.

“The key was already taken.”

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“We did not come for the key.”

The call ended.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

He entered the garage and examined the open military case more closely.

The key had been removed, but the sealed envelope underneath it was still there.

Someone had opened the envelope and replaced its contents.

Inside was a photograph of Adrian, Samantha, and Chloe taken three years earlier.

A red circle had been drawn around Chloe’s face.
