Chapter 14 - the passenger who knew nathan
General Voss’s claim could not be verified immediately.
Official records showed Captain Nathan Samson had boarded Kestrel Seven. Dental records confirmed his identity among the recovered remains.
Yet Voss insisted the evidence had been altered.
“Nathan discovered Silent Compass during its earliest development,” he said during a second interrogation. “He threatened to expose it.”
“So you killed him?” Adrian asked.
“We staged the crash to remove him from military records.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe you helped him escape?”
“I helped Hale take him.”
Voss described a hidden program that recruited brilliant officers, engineers, and intelligence specialists by erasing their former lives. Some joined willingly. Others were forced.
Nathan had designed the original emergency navigation override. He believed it would save hijacked aircraft.
When he discovered Hale planned to use it for covert control, he attempted to destroy the system.
“Hale gave him a choice,” Voss said. “Join the program or watch his family become targets.”
Adrian remembered being a young officer when Nathan died. Their parents had still been alive then.
Within five years, both had passed away after sudden illnesses.
He had never questioned the timing.
“Was Nathan the older voice on the recordings?” Adrian asked.
Voss shook his head.
“No. The Director existed before Nathan joined.”
“Who is the Director?”
“I never met him.”
“You obeyed a man you never met?”
Voss gave a bitter smile.
“You obeyed governments you never fully saw.”
While investigators searched for Hale and Nathan, the real Atlas flight completed its route.
Dr. Elara Vale arrived at the hearing facility safely.
Her testimony and the recovered memory device provided enough evidence to arrest Northstar executives, shut down several control stations, and clear Adrian of every accusation.
His suspension was removed.
His command was restored.
But Adrian did not feel victorious.
Samantha accepted a plea agreement requiring prison time and full cooperation. Vivian, Lauren, and Paige received lesser charges based on their limited roles. Gertrude faced conspiracy, financial fraud, unlawful surveillance, and child endangerment charges.
The main network around Voss began to collapse.
For Chloe, the house on the wet driveway was no longer safe.
Adrian moved with her to a secure residence near the base.
One afternoon, Samantha was permitted a supervised visit.
Chloe sat across from her in a quiet family room.
Samantha had prepared an apology, but when she saw her daughter, the words disappeared.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Chloe held Adrian’s hand.
“Did you love me when you helped them?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you stop?”
Samantha began to cry.
“I was weak.”
Chloe considered the answer.
“Dad was scared too. He still came.”
Samantha lowered her head.
Adrian did not interrupt.
After a moment, Chloe said, “I don’t want to see you for a while.”
Samantha nodded through her tears.
“I understand.”
The decision belonged to Chloe, and for the first time in weeks, the child was given control over something that affected her life.
Later that evening, Adrian received clearance to meet Dr. Vale.
She waited inside a secure medical facility.
Vale was thin, pale, and watchful. She studied Adrian before speaking.
“You look like Nathan.”
“You knew my brother?”
“He saved my life.”
“When?”
“Eight years after Kestrel Seven.”
Adrian sat down slowly.
“Where is he?”
Vale looked toward the security camera.
“I don’t know where he is now.”
“What did he tell you about Chloe?”
Her expression changed.
“That name was not supposed to appear in the operation.”
“It appeared repeatedly.”
Vale asked the guards to leave the room. They refused until Adrian invoked his restored command authority.
When the door closed, Vale spoke quietly.
“Nathan discovered that Silent Compass was not only controlling vehicles. It was collecting data on military families for generations.”
“For what purpose?”
“To predict loyalty.”
“That does not explain Chloe.”
“No.”
Vale opened a hidden compartment inside her medical bracelet.
She removed a small transparent data chip.
“Nathan gave me this before he disappeared again.”
Adrian held it up to the light.
“What is on it?”
“A list of children selected for Phase Two.”
Adrian inserted the chip into a secure reader.
Hundreds of names appeared.
Most were unfamiliar.
One entry was highlighted in red.
