Chapter 8 - what chloe carried

Adrian reached the neighbor’s house in less than a minute.
Two officers were already searching the yard. The bedroom window remained closed, but a wet footprint marked the flower bed beneath it.
Chloe woke when Adrian entered.
“Dad?”
He sat beside her. “You’re safe.”
She rubbed her eyes. “Did they find the man with the ring?”
“Not yet.”
Adrian examined the room without alarming her. Nothing appeared disturbed.
“Chloe, did anyone give you something to carry tonight?”
She thought for a moment.
“Mom gave me my stuffed rabbit.”
“Where is it?”
Chloe pointed to the chair.
The rabbit looked ordinary. Adrian had bought it during a deployment when Chloe was five.
He inspected the seams.
One had been opened and carefully stitched closed again.
Officer Reyes brought a small evidence kit.
Inside the rabbit was a flat black memory device.
Samantha had placed it there.
Adrian returned to the station with Chloe and the rabbit. When confronted, Samantha looked genuinely confused.
“I put the rabbit in her bag because she never sleeps without it.”
“Did you open it?”
“No.”
“Who had access to it?”
“My mother borrowed it last week for a charity collection.”
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
Gertrude had used Chloe’s toy to transport classified material.
Detective Bell brought Gertrude into a separate room.
Gertrude smiled when she saw the memory device.
“You finally found it.”
“What is on it?” Bell asked.
“Insurance.”
“For whom?”
“For anyone intelligent enough not to trust the military.”
Adrian watched through the glass.
Gertrude claimed she had discovered the device inside a package delivered to Samantha. She believed it contained proof of government corruption and intended to exchange it for immunity from the financial crimes connected to her failed investment scheme.
“You endangered Chloe for leverage,” Bell said.
“I placed the device in a toy no one would search.”
“You allowed a child to carry stolen government property.”
Gertrude leaned back.
“The child was never supposed to leave the house.”
Adrian entered the room before Bell could stop him.
Gertrude looked pleased.
“There he is. The hero.”
“Who gave you the device?”
“I don’t know.”
“You knew enough to arrange tonight.”
“I arranged nothing. Samantha did.”
“She followed instructions because you pushed her.”
Gertrude’s smile faded. “Your wife made her own decisions.”
“That may be the first true thing you have said.”
Adrian placed both hands on the table.
“But you are going to tell me who contacted you.”
Gertrude looked toward the observation glass.
“I want protection.”
“You are already surrounded by police.”
“Not from them.”
“From Hale?”
Her expression changed.
Adrian had his answer.
Gertrude leaned forward. “Deputy Director Hale is only a name people see on television. The real organization has no name.”
“What does it want?”
“Control.”
“Of what?”
“Every aircraft using Northstar systems.”
Adrian understood the scale immediately.
Dr. Vale’s allegations were not about defective equipment. They were about hidden remote access.
If the organization controlled navigation systems, it could redirect military aircraft, disable safety mechanisms, or create crashes that looked like pilot error.
“What is on the memory device?” Adrian asked.
“The original command architecture,” Gertrude said. “Proof that the control system was designed under government authorization.”
“Whose authorization?”
Gertrude’s gaze shifted toward the ceiling camera.
Then the lights went out.
Emergency alarms sounded through the station.
Adrian grabbed Gertrude’s shoulder and pulled her beneath the table as the observation window shattered inward.
No shots followed.
Instead, smoke flooded the corridor.
Officers shouted evacuation orders.
Adrian ran toward the room where Chloe waited.
Reyes met him at the doorway.
“She’s gone.”
The chair was empty.
The rear emergency door stood open.
On the floor lay Chloe’s stuffed rabbit.
A black card had been pinned to its chest.
Adrian tore it free.
One sentence was printed across the card.
FLY TO THE COORDINATES OR YOU WILL NEVER SEE HER AGAIN.
Then a small hand touched his back.
Adrian turned sharply.
Chloe stood behind Officer Bell, frightened but unharmed.
“I hid in the cabinet,” she whispered.
Adrian pulled her into his arms.
Relief lasted only a second.
Someone had entered the station believing the memory device was still inside the rabbit.

And whoever planned the intrusion had known the exact moment the device was removed.
There was a traitor inside the police operation.
