Chapter 11 - the false flight

The authorities moved Chloe to a protected military residence under Major Ortiz’s control.

Adrian stayed with her until she fell asleep.

Before he left the room, Chloe opened her eyes.

“Are you angry with Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Are you angry with me?”

Adrian returned to the bedside immediately.

“Never.”

“She said everything happened because I called you.”

“Calling me was the bravest thing anyone did tonight.”

Chloe looked toward the window.

“Is Grandma going away?”

“She will have to answer for what she did.”

“And Mom?”

Adrian struggled to choose words an eight-year-old could carry.

“Your mother made serious mistakes. She is helping us now, but helping does not erase them.”

“Will I see her again?”

“That decision will be made carefully. No one will force you.”

Chloe nodded and closed her eyes.

Adrian remained beside her until her breathing became steady.

In the command room downstairs, Ortiz outlined the plan.

They would allow the Atlas operation to continue with altered information. The false coordinates would direct Silent Compass operatives to the abandoned airfield engraved inside Voss’s ring.

The real aircraft carrying Dr. Vale would follow a different route.

“We need them to believe you are piloting the transport,” Ortiz said.

“Voss knows I am suspended.”

“He also knows you would violate suspension to protect Chloe.”

Adrian understood the role he was expected to play.

He would appear desperate, disobedient, and vulnerable.

Exactly as Hale predicted.

At 8:30 a.m., Adrian contacted Voss through a compromised emergency channel.

“I have the memory device,” Adrian said.

Voss answered after a brief silence.

“Where is your daughter?”

“Safe for now.”

“She will not remain safe unless you cooperate.”

“Give me proof you can protect her.”

“You are not in a position to negotiate.”

“I am the only pilot who can complete Atlas without triggering an automatic security lock.”

That statement was false, but Voss did not know it.

“What do you want?” Voss asked.

“Immunity for Samantha and Chloe.”

“Your wife is not innocent.”

“Neither are you.”

Voss breathed slowly.

“Take the aircraft from Hangar Nine at 11:00. Follow the coordinates in my ring.”

“And Vale?”

“She will be transferred after landing.”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“If anything happens to Chloe…”

“Colonel, everything happening to Chloe began with you.”

The call ended.

At Hangar Nine, military police staged a security failure. Adrian appeared to overpower no one and harm no one, but surveillance cameras recorded him entering the aircraft without authorization.

The images were deliberately allowed to reach Hale’s network.

At 11:06, Adrian took off.

The aircraft carried no passenger.

A remote transmission simulated Vale’s medical monitors and security beacon.

Ortiz tracked the real Atlas flight from a separate command center.

For the first twenty minutes, both aircraft followed similar paths.

Then Adrian’s navigation screen flickered.

The route changed without his command.

Silent Compass had activated.

The aircraft turned toward the abandoned airfield.

Adrian attempted a manual override.

The controls resisted.

Vale had been telling the truth.

Someone outside the cockpit could control military aircraft.

“Ortiz,” Adrian said through an isolated radio, “the remote system is active.”

“We see the diversion.”

“Begin tracing the command source.”

“Working.”

The aircraft descended toward the abandoned runway.

Black vehicles waited below.

Men in unmarked uniforms moved toward the landing area.

Adrian allowed the aircraft to approach.

At three hundred feet, he activated a mechanical emergency circuit Vale had described in her files. The remote system disconnected.

Adrian regained control.

He climbed sharply, passed over the runway, and released a tracking beacon into the grass.

Federal teams surrounded the airfield within minutes.

The ground operatives tried to escape, but every road had been blocked.

No one was seriously injured.

Seven suspects were arrested.

General Voss was not among them.

Deputy Director Hale was not there either.

One arrested operative carried a secure phone.

The latest message on its screen read:

SAMSON IS THE DECOY.

THE REAL TARGET HAS MOVED.

Adrian contacted the protected residence.

No one answered.

Then Ortiz came over the radio.

“Adrian, Chloe’s convoy left the residence twelve minutes ago.”

May you like

“Under whose authority?”

“Hale’s.”
