Chapter 8 - Vanessa Finally Told the Truth)

Vanessa looked smaller in the hospital bed.
Without the champagne dress, makeup, jewelry, and practiced confidence, she seemed younger.
More exhausted.
A bruise darkened her temple.
Bandages covered one wrist.
A police officer stood outside.
Ethan entered with Detective Ruiz.
Vanessa looked at him.
Then away.
"How is Noah?"
Ethan stopped beside the bed.
"Safe."
Her eyes closed.
"Thank God."
"Do not expect that question to make me forget what you did."
"I don’t."
"You locked him inside a car."
"I know."
"You told him his mother abandoned him."
Tears formed.
"I know."
"You accepted money to enter my life."
Vanessa looked at Ruiz.
Then back at Ethan.
"You found the ledger."
"Yes."
She gave a broken laugh.
"Then I guess I don’t have much left to lie about."
Ethan pulled a chair closer.
"Start at the beginning."
Vanessa stared at her hands.
"My mother didn’t die when I was seventeen."
"I know."
"She disappeared."
"That isn’t the same thing."
"In our family, it was."
Vanessa took a breath.
"Evelyn Hart worked for Damian Cross for twenty years. At first, she thought he was just moving money."
"Foundation money."
"Not only yours."
"What was Project Harbor?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Ruiz said, "This is the moment where cooperating matters."
She looked at him.
"You have no idea what Damian can do."
Ruiz nodded toward her bruises.
"I have some idea."
Vanessa swallowed.
"Project Harbor started as a financial operation. Private clinics. Nonprofits. Research foundations. Political donations. Damian used organizations with clean reputations to move money."
"Then?"
"It changed."
"Into what?"
"I don’t know everything."
Ethan leaned forward.
"Stop saying that."
"It’s true."
"Then tell me what you know."
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
"People became part of it."
Ethan felt cold.
"What people?"
"People who knew too much. Employees. Auditors. spouses. consultants."
"Natalie."
Vanessa nodded.
"My mother met Natalie because Damian told her to."
"Why?"
"Natalie found the transfers."
"What happened?"
"My mother tried to convince her the payments were legitimate. Natalie kept digging."
"So Damian had her committed."
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
"Yes."
The word landed harder than he expected.
Ethan had known.
But hearing it spoken made Natalie’s terror real.
"Did Evelyn help?"
"Yes."
"Did she forge my signature?"
"She arranged it."
"Did she approve the medication?"
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
"Yes."
Ethan stood.
Ruiz watched carefully.
Vanessa began crying.
"She didn’t know Damian intended to kill her."
"You expect me to care?"
"No."
"My wife begged for help."
"I know."
"Your mother helped trap her."
"I know."
"Then four years later you walked into my life."
Vanessa wiped her face.
"Damian made me."
"Nobody made you accept money."
"He had my mother."
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa looked toward Ruiz.
"Evelyn tried to leave after Natalie died."
"Why?"
"Because Natalie wasn’t supposed to die."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"That’s the defense?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Damian told Evelyn they would discredit Natalie, force her into treatment, scare her, recover the ledger, and release her."
"But Natalie made copies."
"Yes."
"And Damian killed her."
Vanessa nodded.
"My mother realized too late."
"How?"
"She found altered medication orders."
Ethan looked away.
Vanessa continued.
"Evelyn threatened to go to police. Damian showed her photographs of me."
"What kind?"
"School. Apartment. Friends. Everywhere."
Ethan understood.
"He threatened you."
"Yes."
"So Evelyn kept working."
"Until three years ago. Then she disappeared."
"The time you said she died."
Vanessa nodded.
"She contacted me once a year from different numbers. I never knew where she was."
"Then why did she come to my house?"
"Because Natalie’s blue notebook surfaced."
"How?"
"I found a reference to it in old Project Harbor files Damian ordered me to search."
Ethan stared.
"He had you working for him."
"For years."
"Doing what?"
"Corporate research. Social introductions. Background investigations."
"Manipulating people."
"Yes."
"Then he sent you to me."
Vanessa nodded.
"Why?"
"To find whatever Natalie left behind."
"And Noah?"
Vanessa’s face twisted.
"Noah wasn’t supposed to matter."
Ethan stepped closer.
"He is my son. He always mattered."
"I know that now."
"Did you know the ledger called him a contingency?"
Vanessa froze.
"What?"
Ethan watched her carefully.
"You didn’t know."
"No."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"Show me."
Ruiz gave her a printed copy.
Vanessa read the line.
Her hands began shaking.
"No."
"What?"
She looked at Ethan.
"Noah wasn’t the contingency."
"His name says Cole child."
"That isn’t Noah."
Ethan stopped.
"What?"
Vanessa looked terrified.
"Project Harbor started before Noah was born."
"Then who?"
"I don’t know."
"Vanessa."
"I swear."
Ethan grabbed the page.
"What other Cole child exists?"
She shook her head.
"I don’t know."
Ethan had no other children.
Natalie had never had another child.
At least not that he knew.
Ruiz asked, "Could it refer to a niece or nephew?"
"Ethan is an only child."
Vanessa whispered, "Then Damian knows something you don’t."
The room became silent.
Ethan forced himself back to Natalie.
"Why did you hurt Noah?"
Vanessa stared downward.
"No excuse will make sense."
"Try."
"I was scared."
"That doesn’t explain locking him in a car."
"He had seen Evelyn."
"So?"
"He kept asking who she was."
"You could have lied. You were good at that."
"I did."
"Then why punish him?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Because he said he was going to tell you Evelyn had taken something."
"The notebook."
"Yes."
"And you thought if Noah kept quiet, I wouldn’t investigate."
"Yes."
"You told him Natalie left because of him."
"I needed him to stop talking about her."
"By breaking his heart?"
Vanessa cried harder.
"I became someone I hate."
Ethan’s voice remained cold.
"You became someone my son was afraid of."
"I know."
"That is the part I will never forgive."
She nodded.
"I know."
He turned to leave.
Vanessa spoke quickly.
"Ethan."
He stopped but did not turn.
"Damian knows where Rebecca Lane is."
Ethan looked back.
"What?"
"She never disappeared."
"Where is she?"
"I don’t know exactly."
"You just said"
"My mother told me Rebecca survived."
"Survived what?"
Vanessa looked toward the door.
"The night Natalie died."
Ethan felt every muscle tighten.
"What happened that night?"
Vanessa whispered, "Rebecca tried to get Natalie out."
"Did she?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because Damian arrived first."
Ethan stared at her.
"Damian was at Ravenport?"
"Yes."
"The night Natalie died?"
"Yes."
"Can you prove it?"
Vanessa nodded.
"My mother kept one recording."
"Where?"
"She hid it."
"Where?"
Vanessa looked terrified again.
"She’ll only tell you herself."
"Then where is Evelyn?"
Ruiz answered.
"Different hospital. Protective custody."
Ethan started toward the door.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
He looked down.
She released him immediately.
"One more thing."
"What?"
"Damian didn’t send me to you only for Natalie’s files."
Ethan waited.
"What else?"
Vanessa whispered, "He wanted you to marry me."
"Why?"
"Because after the wedding, I would have had access to the family trust."
Ethan frowned.
"My trust?"
"No."
Vanessa shook her head.
"Natalie’s."
Ethan stared.
"Natalie didn’t have a family trust."
May you like
Vanessa’s face was pale.
"That’s another thing they lied to you about."
