THE BOY IN THE BLACK SUV / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Dead Man’s Voice)

Thomas Cole had been dead for four years before Natalie died.

At least that was what the world believed.

He had died after a private plane crashed into the Atlantic.

No survivors.

Only wreckage.

No recoverable body.

Ethan had mourned him.

Inherited the company.

Assumed leadership of the Cole Foundation.

Now Thomas’s voice existed on an audio recording created long after the crash.

Marcus replayed it.

"Damian, leave the boy out of this."

Damian answered.

"The boy is precisely why this matters."

Thomas said, "He doesn’t know anything."

"Neither did Ethan."

"Keep him out of it too."

Damian laughed.

"You surrendered the right to give instructions years ago."

The recording crackled.

Natalie’s voice entered.

"You told me Thomas was dead."

Damian replied, "For most practical purposes, he is."

Ethan gripped the table.

Marcus whispered, "Your father survived."

Ethan did not answer.

The audio continued.

Thomas sounded weak.

"Natalie, listen to me."

"Where are you?"

"That doesn’t matter."

"Are you being held?"

"Listen."

A noise interrupted.

Damian ordered someone away from the recorder.

Then Thomas said the sentence that explained the ledger.

"The Cole child in Harbor isn’t Noah."

Ethan felt his heartbeat stop.

Natalie asked, "Then who?"

Thomas answered.

"Your daughter."

Silence.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Natalie said, "I don’t have a daughter."

Thomas replied, "You did."

The recording ended.

Ethan stood motionless.

Marcus spoke first.

"Did Natalie ever have a child before Noah?"

"No."

"Could she have?"

"No."

"Are you certain?"

Ethan turned.

"We met when she was twenty four. We married at twenty seven."

"Before you met."

"She would have told me."

Marcus did not argue.

Ethan called Rebecca.

She came to the secure house.

He played the audio.

Rebecca listened with tears in her eyes.

"I never heard this."

"Did Natalie ever mention a daughter?"

"No."

"Thomas?"

"She thought your father was dead."

"So did I."

Claire searched everything available about Thomas’s crash.

The plane had vanished during a storm.

A small amount of wreckage washed ashore.

Thomas’s personal watch was recovered.

No bodies.

The final investigation concluded catastrophic structural failure.

Ethan had accepted it.

Now Marcus found a connection.

The maintenance contractor responsible for Thomas’s plane had been acquired six months later.

By Valence Holdings.

Ethan laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"They owned every road."

Damian had not simply infiltrated Ethan’s life.

He had been inside his family’s history.

Ruiz arrived with another revelation.

Federal agents had searched Damian’s Manhattan office.

Damian was nowhere to be found.

But they recovered encrypted records.

One folder was labeled T COLE.

"Can they open it?"

"They’re working on it."

"How long?"

"Unknown."

Ethan hated that word.

Then Ruiz looked toward Noah.

"I also need to discuss custody precautions."

"Why?"

"Vanessa’s initial child endangerment case is moving forward."

"Good."

"Her cooperation may affect charging decisions."

"It shouldn’t erase what she did."

"It won’t."

Ethan looked toward the window.

Vanessa had endangered Noah.

But she was also becoming a witness against Damian.

Justice was becoming less emotionally satisfying than revenge.

He did not like that.

A security guard entered.

"Mr. Cole, package at the gate."

"From whom?"

"No sender."

Ruiz immediately stopped Ethan from touching it.

Bomb technicians examined the package.

Safe.

Inside was a small wooden box.

Thomas Cole’s watch.

The same watch supposedly recovered from the ocean eight years earlier.

Ethan stared.

He remembered identifying it.

Gold case.

Cracked face.

Initials TC engraved on the back.

Ruiz turned it over.

The initials were there.

"Could be a replica."

Ethan shook his head.

"There’s a scratch near the crown. I made it when I was twelve."

He had borrowed the watch without permission and dropped it while trying to impress friends.

Thomas had been furious.

Then laughed.

This was the watch.

Inside the box was a note.

Your father has waited long enough.

Come alone if you want him alive.

Beneath the message was an address.

Marcus immediately said, "No."

Ethan ignored him.

Ruiz read the address.

"Abandoned marina."

"You know it?"

"Yes."

"I’m going."

"No."

"Detective."

"You will not go alone."

"The note says"

"I do not take operational advice from kidnappers."

Ethan looked at the watch.

If Thomas was alive, then nearly everything Ethan believed about his family was incomplete.

If Thomas had known about Natalie’s hidden daughter, then the secret existed before Noah.

Before Vanessa.

Maybe before Ethan met Natalie.

At the marina, federal agents positioned themselves out of sight.

Ethan entered the main boathouse alone enough for whoever watched to believe the demand had been followed.

Inside was a chair.

A table.

One old television.

The screen turned on.

Thomas Cole appeared.

Older.

Thin.

Alive.

Ethan forgot how to breathe.

"Dad."

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

"Ethan."

The video was prerecorded.

Ethan stepped closer.

Thomas continued.

"If Damian sent you my watch, then he knows Evelyn talked."

Ethan stared.

"I’m alive."

Thomas almost smiled.

"Though I imagine you’ve worked that out."

His expression became serious.

"I did not abandon you."

Ethan’s eyes burned.

"I disappeared because Damian gave me a choice. My life or yours."

Thomas leaned closer.

"But I made a mistake. I believed he would honor the bargain."

He looked downward.

"When Natalie began investigating Harbor, Damian realized the Cole family had become dangerous again."

Thomas looked back at the camera.

"Ethan, you need to understand something about Natalie."

Ethan waited.

"The daughter she lost was never dead."

The screen went black.

Lights turned on behind Ethan.

A young woman stood at the far end of the boathouse.

Mid twenties.

Dark hair.

Terrified eyes.

She looked so much like Natalie that Ethan could not move.

The woman whispered, "Are you Ethan Cole?"

He stared.

"Who are you?"

She swallowed.

"My name is Lily."

May you like

Then she said the words that opened an entirely new wound.

"Natalie was my mother."
