Chapter 13 - The Arrest That Was Too Easy)

Damian Cross smiled when federal agents photographed him.
That was the first thing Ethan noticed.
Most men accused of conspiracy, financial crimes, kidnapping, obstruction, falsifying medical records, and possible involvement in murder did not smile.
Damian did.
He walked into federal court wearing a dark suit and no tie.
Cameras flashed.
Reporters shouted.
"Mr. Cross, did you order the murder of Natalie Cole?"
"Mr. Cross, what is Project Harbor?"
"Did you hold Thomas Cole captive?"
"Who is Lily Cross?"
Damian answered nothing.
But when he saw Ethan across the courthouse corridor, he smiled again.
Ethan wanted to hit him.
Instead he walked closer.
Damian’s attorney tried to intervene.
Damian raised one hand.
"Ethan."
"Where is my father?"
Damian smiled.
"I wondered which question you’d ask first."
"Where is he?"
"Thomas always believed he was the smartest person in the room."
"Answer me."
"He spent years running."
"From you."
"From consequences."
Ethan stepped closer.
Damian’s guards moved.
Damian remained calm.
"Your father is why Natalie became involved."
"She became involved because you stole money."
Damian laughed softly.
"You still think this is about money."
"Project Harbor."
"That name means whatever frightened people need it to mean."
"Rebecca Lane is alive."
Damian’s smile weakened.
"Evelyn is alive."
Nothing.
"Lily is alive."
There.
A flicker.
Ethan saw it.
"That bothers you."
Damian’s eyes became cold.
"Lily is confused."
"She knows who you are."
"She knows what Thomas told her."
"She knows Natalie was her mother."
Damian leaned closer.
"So does the entire world now."
Ethan froze.
"What?"
Damian smiled.
"Check your phone."
News alerts appeared.
NATALIE COLE SECRET DAUGHTER REVEALED.
COLE FAMILY INHERITANCE BATTLE.
MYSTERY WOMAN CLAIMS CONNECTION TO BILLION DOLLAR CROSS ESTATE.
Private photographs of Lily had leaked online.
Her address in Vermont.
Her workplace.
Her previous name.
Everything.
Ethan looked at Damian.
"You did this."
"I’m under arrest."
"You arranged it."
"Can you prove that?"
Ethan wanted to strangle him.
Instead he walked away.
Marcus met him near the elevator.
"Lily’s location at the safe house hasn’t leaked."
"Yet."
"Ruiz is moving her."
Ethan stopped.
The message from Thomas returned.
DO NOT TRUST RUIZ.
"Where?"
"New federal site."
"Who knows?"
"Ruiz."
"No."
Marcus stared.
"What?"
"Nobody moves Lily with Ruiz."
"Ethan"
"My father warned us."
"Your father could be wrong."
"He’s alive after eight years because he learned not to ignore suspicion."
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Ruiz has helped us."
"So did Vanessa."
That ended the argument.
They returned to the secure residence.
Ruiz was furious.
"You think I’m compromised?"
"I think Thomas does."
"And Thomas faked his death for eight years."
"To survive Damian."
"According to Thomas."
"According to everything we’ve found."
Ruiz paced.
"I’ve risked my career on this case."
"Then help prove my father wrong."
"How?"
"Who assigned you?"
Ruiz stopped.
"Captain Howard."
"When?"
"After the restaurant incident."
"Who chose your unit?"
"Standard rotation."
"Prove it."
Ruiz stared at Ethan.
Then called his department.
Within an hour they found something strange.
Ruiz had not been next in rotation.
Another detective had been assigned first.
The assignment changed eleven minutes after the restaurant video reached police.
Ruiz looked genuinely disturbed.
"Who changed it?"
His captain denied doing so.
Digital logs showed an administrator account.
The credentials belonged to a retired employee.
Someone had deliberately placed Ruiz on Ethan’s case.
Marcus asked, "Why?"
Nobody knew.
Ruiz checked his own history.
Eight years earlier, he had been a junior officer.
One of his first major incidents.
Thomas Cole’s plane crash.
Ruiz stared at the old report.
"I interviewed the maintenance crew."
Ethan looked at him.
"Did you find anything?"
"I reported a discrepancy."
"What discrepancy?"
"Fuel records."
"Then?"
"My supervisor removed it from the final report."
"Who?"
Ruiz searched.
His former supervisor.
Lieutenant Martin Vale.
Retired.
Current employer.
Security consultant.
Cross Meridian Capital.
Ruiz sat down.
"They put me on your case because I’m connected to Thomas."
"Maybe Damian wanted to watch you."
"Or frame me."
Ethan remembered Thomas’s warning.
Do not trust Ruiz.
Perhaps it was not an accusation.
Perhaps it was a warning that Ruiz himself had been positioned.
Ruiz’s phone rang.
This time he did not answer immediately.
Unknown number.
Everyone watched.
He put it on speaker.
"Ruiz."
A distorted male voice said, "You should have stayed retired from the Cole crash."
Ruiz’s face hardened.
"I was twenty six."
"Then you’ve had a long time to forget."
"Who is this?"
The caller ignored him.
"Tell Ethan the boy survives only if Lily disappears."
Ethan moved toward the phone.
"Which boy?"
The line disconnected.
Noah was upstairs.
Security checked immediately.
Safe.
Ethan felt relief for exactly ten seconds.
Then Claire ran into the room.
"Turn on the news."
A video had appeared online.
Five year old Noah outside the restaurant.
Crying in Ethan’s arms.
Vanessa beside them.
The clip had been edited.
Important context removed.
Headlines framed Ethan as an enraged billionaire who assaulted his fiancée after a domestic dispute.
Another article claimed Vanessa had been protecting Noah from Ethan.
False witnesses appeared.
Anonymous sources described Ethan as controlling.
The narrative was changing.
Damian was using public chaos.
Claire said, "They’re burying the Harbor story."
Marcus nodded.
"Create enough scandal and nobody knows what to believe."
Then another headline appeared.
CHILD SERVICES REVIEWING COLE HOME.
Ethan stared.
"What?"
Ruiz called immediately.
The referral claimed Ethan had exposed Noah to violence, unsafe caregivers, and unstable domestic conditions.
Anonymous complaint.
Marcus swore.
"They’re trying to separate you from Noah."
Ethan looked toward Lily.
She understood first.
"If Noah is removed from your custody"
Marcus finished.
"Then any emergency guardianship structure around the family trusts becomes vulnerable."
Damian did not need to escape prison.
He needed Ethan legally discredited.
Ethan went upstairs.
Noah was drawing.
A black SUV.
A restaurant.
A little boy.
But he had drawn another figure behind the car.
A man.
Ethan crouched beside him.
"Who is that?"
Noah pointed.
"The man who talked to Vanessa."
"When?"
"Before she put me inside."
Ethan’s heart accelerated.
"What did he say?"
Noah thought.
"He said, Make sure Ethan sees what kind of father he is."
Ethan felt cold.
"Did you see his face?"
Noah nodded.
"Would you recognize him?"
Another nod.
Ethan showed him a photograph of Damian.
Noah shook his head.
Not Damian.
He showed board members.
Executives.
Foundation staff.
Noah kept shaking his head.
Then Ethan opened photographs from Thomas’s plane crash investigation.
Noah pointed immediately.
"That’s him."
Ethan stared.
Lieutenant Martin Vale.
Ruiz’s former supervisor.
The man now working for Damian.
The restaurant incident had not been random cruelty alone.
Someone had encouraged Vanessa to create a crisis involving Noah.
A crisis designed to make Ethan look unstable.
But Vanessa had lost control of it.
The security footage exposed her instead.
The mistake that endangered Noah may also have broken Damian’s entire plan.
Ruiz sent teams to locate Vale.
They found his house empty.
His phone abandoned.
May you like
His car parked at the airport.
And inside the trunk, they found Thomas Cole’s blood.
