THE BOY IN THE BLACK SUV / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Had Been Dead for Three Years)

They found Rebecca Lane in a town where nobody knew her real name.

Not because police tracked her.

Because Claire did.

Natalie’s old financial spreadsheet contained a recurring payment to an organization called Willow House.

It looked insignificant.

Nine hundred dollars every month.

Claire discovered Willow House was a women’s legal assistance charity in Vermont.

Natalie had donated privately.

After Natalie died, the payments continued anonymously.

Marcus traced them through a trust.

The trustee was a lawyer named Peter Lane.

Rebecca’s older brother.

Police contacted him.

At first, Peter denied everything.

Then Ruiz told him Damian Cross was traveling toward Vermont.

Peter changed his mind.

Rebecca had been living under the name Rachel Moore for three years.

She worked at a small community clinic.

She had built a quiet life.

Until Damian’s plane landed.

Federal authorities reached her first.

Rebecca agreed to return only after being assured Noah was under protection.

Ethan met her inside a secure federal building.

She was fifty one.

Thin.

Dark hair cut short.

Her eyes seemed permanently alert.

She looked at Ethan for several seconds.

Then began crying.

"I tried to call you."

Ethan believed her immediately.

"I know."

"Twelve times."

"I know."

"They blocked me."

"I know."

Rebecca covered her face.

"I’m sorry."

Ethan sat across from her.

"So am I."

"For what?"

"For believing them."

Rebecca shook her head.

"They built paperwork specifically so you would believe them."

"Natalie needed me."

"She knew you loved her."

"Then why didn’t she tell me everything sooner?"

Rebecca looked at him.

"Because she was trying to protect you."

"That sounds ridiculous now."

"It sounded ridiculous then too."

Despite everything, Ethan almost laughed.

That felt like Natalie.

Rebecca continued.

"Natalie believed Damian would leave you alone if you knew nothing."

"He didn’t."

"No."

"He targeted Noah."

Rebecca’s face changed.

"How?"

Ethan told her about Vanessa.

The SUV.

The ledger.

The inheritance.

Rebecca listened in horror.

"Vanessa Hart?"

"You know her?"

"I met her once."

"When?"

"The night Natalie died."

Ethan froze.

"Vanessa was there?"

"She was nineteen."

Ethan stared.

Vanessa had told him she had never met Natalie.

Another lie.

"Why was she there?"

"Evelyn brought her."

"Why?"

"As leverage."

"What?"

Rebecca closed her eyes.

"Damian had threatened Vanessa for months. Evelyn thought if Damian saw how young she was, he might let them leave."

"He didn’t."

"No."

"What did Vanessa see?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"Enough."

"Did she see Natalie die?"

"I don’t know. She was outside the room when I ran."

Ethan remembered Noah saying Vanessa cried beside Natalie’s photograph.

I didn’t know they would hurt her.

"What happened after you escaped?"

"I drove until my car nearly ran out of fuel."

"Why didn’t you call police?"

"I did."

Ethan stared.

"What?"

"The first police officer I spoke to called Damian."

"How do you know?"

"He stepped outside while I was giving my statement. I saw Damian’s name on his phone."

Ruiz leaned forward.

"Which department?"

Rebecca named it.

Ruiz wrote it down.

"I left before they could stop me."

"Then?"

"Peter helped me disappear."

"Why not federal authorities?"

"Who could I trust?"

Ethan could not argue.

Rebecca continued.

"Natalie had discovered Project Harbor was more than money laundering."

"What was it?"

Rebecca looked toward Ruiz.

"Medical identity manipulation."

Silence.

Ethan frowned.

"Explain."

"Damian invested in private clinics, rehabilitation centers, psychiatric facilities, and long term care providers. He gained access to people’s records."

"For what?"

"Leverage."

"Blackmail?"

"Sometimes."

"Sometimes?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Sometimes patients became legally incompetent. Sometimes guardianships changed. Sometimes estates transferred."

Ethan felt sick.

"Wealthy people?"

"Not only wealthy. Political families. executives. witnesses. Anyone valuable."

"Project Harbor could make someone look unstable."

"Yes."

"Like Natalie."

"Exactly."

Ruiz asked, "How many?"

"I don’t know."

"Estimate."

"Dozens. Maybe more."

Ethan understood why Natalie had refused to stop.

Money was not the real secret.

People were.

"Did Damian order Natalie’s death because of Harbor?"

"Yes."

"Can you prove it?"

Rebecca looked at him.

"I can testify."

"That’s not enough."

"I know."

"Do you have documents?"

"No."

"Recording?"

Rebecca’s eyes moved toward Ruiz.

"Evelyn recorded part of that night."

"The recording is gone."

"Then there’s one other copy."

Ethan leaned forward.

"Where?"

"Natalie made it."

"What?"

"She had a small recorder in her room."

Ethan stared.

"Did Damian know?"

"No."

"Where is it?"

"She told me she hid backups with someone named June."

"June who?"

"I don’t know."

Ethan thought.

Natalie had no close friend named June.

Claire did not recognize it.

Marcus searched old contacts.

Nothing.

Rebecca frowned.

"Maybe it wasn’t a person."

That night Ethan returned to Noah.

The boy was asleep beneath a blanket covered in dinosaurs.

Ethan sat beside him.

The entire investigation had begun because Noah had been locked inside a car.

But the deeper truth was horrifying.

Noah had been watched before Vanessa entered their lives.

Before he could remember.

Before Natalie died.

Ethan touched his son’s hair.

"I’m going to fix this."

Noah opened one eye.

"You talk too loud."

Ethan smiled.

"Sorry."

"Did you find Vanessa?"

"Yes."

"Is she okay?"

"She’s safe."

Noah considered that.

"Are you still mad?"

"Yes."

"Forever?"

Ethan paused.

"Maybe not forever."

Noah closed his eyes.

"Mommy said forever is too long to stay mad."

Ethan stared.

"When did Mommy tell you that?"

Noah was almost asleep.

"In the video."

"What video?"

Noah opened his eyes again.

"The birthday video."

Ethan’s heart accelerated.

"What birthday video?"

"The one in June."

Ethan froze.

June.

Not a person.

A month.

Natalie had hidden something in a June video.

He ran to the media archive.

Every family recording had been backed up automatically.

June, four years earlier.

Three videos.

Noah eating cake.

Natalie pushing him on a swing.

A family picnic.

Ethan opened the picnic recording.

At first nothing.

Then Natalie walked toward the camera.

Noah was playing behind her.

She smiled.

"Future Noah, your father is pretending he knows how to grill."

Ethan almost laughed.

The camera shifted.

Near the end, Natalie picked it up again.

She looked directly into the lens.

Her smile disappeared.

"If you’re watching the June files because Rebecca sent you, check the audio channel."

Ethan’s blood went cold.

The visible video ended.

Marcus extracted the second audio track.

A hidden recording played.

Damian Cross.

Evelyn.

Dr. Voss.

Natalie.

Then a fifth voice.

A voice Ethan knew better than any other.

His own father.

Thomas Cole.

Thomas had died eight years earlier.

Which was impossible.

The recording had been made four years ago.

Yet the voice was unmistakable.

"Damian, leave the boy out of this."

Ethan stopped the audio.

Marcus stared at him.

"Who is that?"

May you like

Ethan could barely speak.

"My father."
