Chapter 12 - Lily)

Ethan’s first instinct was disbelief.
His second was recognition.
Lily had Natalie’s eyes.
Not similar.
The same.
The slight downward angle at the corners.
The way one eyebrow lifted when she was frightened.
Ethan had seen that expression across breakfast tables, airport terminals, hospital rooms, and thousands of ordinary moments he would have given anything to experience again.
The federal agents entered.
Lily panicked.
"No."
Ethan raised his hands.
"They’re police."
"You brought police."
"I didn’t know you would be here."
She looked toward the doors.
Ruiz approached carefully.
"Nobody is arresting you."
Lily laughed nervously.
"That’s what people say before they arrest someone."
Ethan asked, "Where is Thomas?"
Lily looked at him.
"You call him Thomas?"
"He’s my father."
Her face changed.
"You really don’t know."
"Know what?"
She sat slowly.
"Thomas raised me."
Ethan felt the room tilt.
"Where?"
"Different places."
"Since when?"
"Since I was a baby."
Ethan stared.
"That’s impossible. He was running Cole Industries."
"Not every day."
"Where is he now?"
"I don’t know."
"When did you last see him?"
"Three weeks ago."
"Was he safe?"
"No."
The answer cut through everything.
"What happened?"
"Damian found us."
Ruiz moved closer.
"Where?"
"Quebec."
"How did you get here?"
"Thomas told me to come."
"Why?"
Lily looked at Ethan.
"To find you."
Ethan sat across from her.
"Tell me about Natalie."
Lily lowered her eyes.
"I didn’t know she was my mother until I was sixteen."
"When were you born?"
She told him.
The date was six years before Ethan met Natalie.
Possible.
Painfully possible.
"Who was your father?"
"I don’t know."
"Did Natalie give you up?"
Lily shook her head.
"Thomas said she believed I died."
Ethan remembered the recording.
Your daughter.
I don’t have a daughter.
You did.
"What happened?"
"Thomas never told me everything."
"Tell me what you know."
Lily breathed slowly.
"Natalie was eighteen. She was pregnant. The Cross family considered it a scandal."
"Damian."
"Yes."
"He was already controlling her?"
"He was controlling everyone."
Lily continued.
"Natalie went into labor early. Thomas was there."
"Why?"
"Because he was helping her."
Ethan frowned.
"My father knew Natalie before I did."
"Yes."
"How?"
"Thomas knew Natalie’s biological father."
"The man who had the affair."
"Yes."
"Then Thomas knew she was Damian’s half sister."
"Yes."
Ethan’s anger shifted toward his father.
Another secret.
Another carefully constructed lie.
"What happened after Lily was born?"
Lily answered for herself.
"I had respiratory complications."
"Then?"
"Damian’s doctor told Natalie I died."
Ethan felt sick.
"But you didn’t."
"No."
"Why take you?"
Lily looked toward Ruiz.
"Harbor."
Ethan understood.
The project had existed much longer than they realized.
"Thomas rescued you?"
"Eventually."
"What does that mean?"
"For the first nine months, I was in private care under another name. Thomas discovered the records."
"Then he took you."
"Yes."
"Why not return you to Natalie?"
Lily’s voice cracked.
"Damian threatened to kill her."
Ethan stood.
"So Thomas let Natalie believe her daughter was dead?"
"He thought it was the only way to protect both of us."
"That is not protection."
"I know."
"That is cruelty."
"I know."
The words echoed.
Ethan looked away.
His father had repeatedly chosen secrecy as protection.
Natalie had done the same.
Evelyn.
Rebecca.
Vanessa.
Everyone had hidden truth and called it protection.
And the result was graves, broken families, and a five year old crying behind a car window.
Ethan turned back.
"Did Natalie ever discover you were alive?"
Lily nodded.
"When?"
"Shortly before Ravenport."
Ethan’s chest tightened.
"That’s why she kept investigating."
"Thomas contacted her."
"How?"
"Encrypted email."
"Did they meet?"
"Once."
"Did she meet you?"
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
"No."
"Why?"
"Damian found out first."
Ethan sat again.
Lily continued.
"Thomas promised Natalie he would arrange a safe meeting. But she was taken to Ravenport."
"And died."
"Yes."
Lily began crying.
"I spent years believing she chose not to meet me."
Ethan understood that kind of wound.
"She didn’t."
"I know now."
"She died trying to expose the people who took you."
Lily nodded.
They sat in silence.
Then Ethan asked, "Why did Damian want me to marry Vanessa?"
Lily looked confused.
"Vanessa Hart?"
"Yes."
"Thomas talked about her."
"What did he say?"
"She was supposed to gain legal access to the Cross inheritance through Noah."
"That’s what we learned."
"No."
Lily shook her head.
"Not Noah."
Ethan stared.
"You?"
"Yes."
"Why would marrying me give Vanessa access to you?"
"Because Thomas legally made you my emergency guardian years ago."
Ethan stood again.
"He what?"
"Without telling you."
"That can’t be legal."
"Apparently it was structured through a trust."
Marcus, who had been listening quietly, looked deeply offended on behalf of the law.
"I would very much like to see those documents."
Lily almost smiled.
Then her face became serious.
"Damian needed Vanessa inside your family because Thomas believed you were the only person he could trust with me if something happened."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"He trusted me so much he told me nothing."
Lily looked away.
"I was angry too."
"At Thomas?"
"Still am."
"Where is he?"
"I really don’t know."
She reached into her coat.
Agents immediately reacted.
Lily froze.
"It’s a phone."
Ruiz took it.
Old.
Encrypted.
One unread message.
Sent thirty minutes earlier.
LILY SAFE?
Lily stared.
"That’s Thomas."
Ruiz asked, "Can you respond?"
"Maybe."
She typed.
YES. WITH ETHAN.
The reply came almost immediately.
LEAVE.
Ethan leaned closer.
"Why?"
Another message.
DAMIAN KNOWS.
Then:
DO NOT TRUST RUIZ.
Every person in the boathouse went silent.
Detective Samuel Ruiz slowly looked at the phone.
Ethan looked at him.
Ruiz’s face hardened.
"I would like to know why your father thinks that."
Lily whispered, "Thomas doesn’t make accusations without proof."
Ruiz stepped back.
"Then nobody moves until we figure out what this means."
His phone rang.
He answered.
"Ruiz."
He listened.
His expression changed.
"Where?"
More silence.
Then he looked toward Ethan.
"Damian Cross was just arrested."
Ethan frowned.
"Where?"
"JFK."
Lily shook her head.
"No."
Ruiz looked at her.
"What?"
"If Damian let himself get arrested"
May you like
She stared at the message from Thomas.
"Then something else is about to happen."
