Chapter 7 - Orange Soup

The dining room glowed beneath the chandelier as the family gathered.
Daniel’s father, Charles, appeared nervous. Lydia barely touched her food.
Evelyn wore emerald silk and pearls, dressed as though she were attending a celebration.
Daniel waited until the main course before placing a folder beside Claire’s plate.
“You’re going to sign this tonight.”
Claire did not open it.
“What is it?”
“A financial agreement. It protects the family.”
“From whom?”
Daniel leaned closer.
“From you.”
Evelyn smiled over her wineglass.
Claire looked around the table.
“Does everyone here know what’s in this agreement?”
Charles looked away.
Lydia whispered, “Claire, don’t sign anything.”
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
“You stay out of this.”
Claire remained seated.
“I asked a simple question.”
Evelyn set down her glass.
“You have spent years enjoying our name, our home, and our money. Now you will show some gratitude.”
Claire almost laughed at the word our.
Daniel pushed the folder toward her.
“Sign.”
“No.”
The room became silent.
Daniel’s face changed. The charming mask disappeared, revealing the anger Claire had seen only in private.
He reached for the large bowl of orange soup beside him.
Lydia stood suddenly.
“Daniel, don’t.”
He ignored her.
The soup struck Claire’s hair, face, shoulders, and dress.
It was warm rather than hot, but the humiliation was deliberate.
Evelyn laughed.
Charles stared in disbelief.
Daniel held the empty bowl above Claire’s head as the final drops fell.
“You have ten minutes to get out.”
Claire reached for her napkin.
Her heart pounded, but her hands remained steady.

This was the moment Daniel believed he had won.
It was also the moment everything he owned began slipping away.
