Chapter 3 - A Quiet Investigation
Claire contacted Margaret Hale, an attorney known for handling financial fraud and high-profile divorces.
They met in a quiet café under the pretense of discussing a charity audit.
Margaret listened without interrupting as Claire described the forged signature, the hidden companies, and the transfers from Whitmore Holdings.
“You need to assume they have access to your phone, email, and financial accounts,” Margaret said.
Claire’s hands tightened around her coffee cup.
“You think Daniel is monitoring me?”
“I think people willing to forge your signature rarely stop there.”
Margaret helped Claire open new accounts at a separate bank. She arranged for important mail to be delivered to her law office and introduced Claire to a licensed investigator named Simone Reyes.
Within weeks, Simone uncovered three more shell companies.
One had purchased a vacation property in Evelyn’s name. Another had paid Daniel’s personal gambling debts. The third had received donations intended for a children’s medical charity.
That discovery changed everything.
The Whitmore Foundation had publicly raised money for families unable to afford long-term treatment. Claire had personally attended fundraising events and spoken with parents who believed every dollar would help their children.
More than two million dollars had been redirected.
Claire stared at the transaction records in Margaret’s office.
“They stole from sick children.”
Margaret nodded. “And they used your credentials to approve part of it.”
Claire understood the plan.
If authorities discovered the missing money, Daniel could claim Claire had authorized the transfers. Her experience as a forensic accountant made her the perfect person to blame.
The Whitmores had not merely stolen her inheritance.
They had constructed a future in which Claire would carry their guilt.
Margaret advised her to leave immediately, but Claire refused.
“If I disappear now, they’ll destroy the records.”
“Staying could be dangerous.”
“They don’t know I suspect anything.”
Margaret studied her for a moment.
“Then you must remain calm. No accusations. No threats. Give them no reason to panic.”
Claire returned home that night and found Daniel drinking wine in the library.
He smiled when she entered.
“There’s my perfect wife.”
