Chapter 1 - The Perfect Whitmore Wife

Three years earlier, Claire Bennett believed she had married into a family that valued loyalty.
Daniel Whitmore had been charming when they met at a charity auction in Boston. He remembered the names of waiters, sent flowers to Claire’s office, and listened when she spoke about her work as a forensic accountant.
He appeared different from the arrogant men who often surrounded wealthy families. He said he admired that Claire had built her own career without inherited money or influential connections.
Within a year, they were married beneath white roses at the Whitmore estate.
The mansion was elegant, but Claire quickly learned that beauty could disguise cruelty.
Evelyn controlled everything. She chose the flowers in Claire and Daniel’s apartment, criticized Claire’s clothes, and corrected the way she held a wineglass.
“A Whitmore woman must understand presentation,” Evelyn often said.
Daniel laughed whenever Claire complained.
“That’s just Mother. Don’t take it personally.”
At first, Claire tried to adapt. She attended formal dinners, supported the family foundation, and helped Daniel review financial reports for Whitmore Holdings.
The company had been founded by Daniel’s grandfather and now managed luxury hotels, office buildings, and private investment funds.
Claire noticed irregularities almost immediately.
Several invoices from consulting companies appeared unusually high. Money moved between the family foundation and private accounts with vague descriptions. Some documents carried Claire’s electronic approval even though she had never seen them.
When she mentioned the inconsistencies, Daniel kissed her forehead.
“You work too much. Not every number is a crime.”
Claire wanted to believe him.
She told herself that wealthy family businesses operated differently. She told herself Daniel loved her. She told herself Evelyn’s insults were harmless traditions from a woman afraid of losing control.
Then Claire’s father became ill.
During the months she spent traveling between Boston and her parents’ home, Daniel began handling more of their shared finances.
