Chapter 2 - The Signature She Never Gave
Six months after her father’s recovery, Claire received a call from a bank officer.
The man asked her to confirm a guarantee connected to a commercial property loan.
Claire had no idea what he was talking about.
The guarantee carried her name, her address, and a digital signature nearly identical to her own. It also listed several investment accounts inherited from her grandmother as collateral.
Claire asked the bank officer to send every document associated with the loan.
She waited until Daniel left for a business trip before opening the files.
The signature was false.
The authorization date placed Claire in another state, sitting beside her father’s hospital bed. Flight records and hospital visitor logs could prove it.
The loan had benefited a company called Northbridge Advisory.
Claire searched the company’s registration records and discovered it had been created only two years earlier. Its listed address belonged to a private mailbox. Its director was a former college roommate of Daniel’s.
More disturbing was the repayment schedule.
Large amounts had been transferred from Whitmore Holdings to Northbridge, then divided among accounts connected to Daniel and Evelyn.
Claire felt sick.
She considered calling Daniel immediately, but years of forensic work had taught her one essential lesson.
Never confront someone before securing the evidence.
She copied the documents onto an encrypted drive and returned everything to its original location.
When Daniel came home, he brought her a diamond bracelet.
“I missed you,” he said.
Claire looked at the bracelet and wondered whether her own stolen money had paid for it.
That evening, Evelyn came for dinner.
She complained that Claire had not prepared enough courses and suggested hiring a full-time housekeeper.
Claire smiled politely.
Daniel said nothing.
For the first time, Claire did not feel hurt by his silence.
She studied him instead.
She noticed how quickly he changed the subject whenever business finances were mentioned. She noticed the glance he exchanged with Evelyn when Claire referred to her grandmother’s trust.
