Chapter 6 - The Final Trap
Detectives from the financial-crimes unit began working with federal investigators and the state attorney general’s office.
Claire provided documents, passwords, voice messages, and transaction records. Lydia gave a formal statement.
The authorities asked Claire to continue behaving normally while they prepared warrants.
Daniel, unaware of the investigation, became increasingly confident.
He began speaking openly about taking control of Claire’s trust. He told her that marriage required “financial obedience” and accused her of being ungrateful whenever she questioned him.
One evening, Claire left her phone recording in the library.
Daniel and Evelyn entered after believing she had gone upstairs.
“She’ll sign after the dinner,” Daniel said.
“She’s softer when she’s embarrassed,” Evelyn replied. “Remind her that no one will believe her over this family.”
“And if she refuses?”
“We release the audit documents with her name on them. By the time she proves anything, her reputation will be destroyed.”
Daniel laughed.
“Ten minutes should be enough to frighten her.”
Claire listened to the recording the next morning in Margaret’s office.
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“They’re planning to force you into signing during the family dinner.”
Claire looked through the window at the city below.
“Then that’s when we end it.”
The police agreed to execute the warrants during the dinner. Daniel and Evelyn would be together, along with the financial records stored in the mansion.
Claire prepared three sets of documents.
The first contained the divorce petition.
The second terminated the Whitmores’ right to occupy the mansion.
The third summarized the evidence against Daniel and Evelyn.
Margaret placed the originals in a sealed file.
“What happens if they don’t follow the plan?” she asked.
“They always follow the same plan,” Claire replied. “They humiliate someone, then expect silence.”
The formal dinner invitation arrived the next day.
Evelyn had written a note at the bottom.
