Chapter 4 - Evelyn’s Rules
As Claire quietly collected evidence, Evelyn became more openly cruel.
She criticized Claire at dinners, excluded her from family decisions, and repeatedly reminded her that the mansion belonged to the Whitmores.
“You are here because Daniel allows it,” Evelyn said one afternoon.
Claire was arranging flowers for a foundation event.
“Is that what Daniel told you?”
Evelyn smiled. “Daniel tells me everything.”
Claire knew that was almost true.
Daniel depended on his mother’s approval. Every major decision passed through Evelyn before becoming final. She had raised him to believe that family loyalty meant protecting the Whitmore name, regardless of who was harmed.
Lydia was the only member of the family who showed Claire kindness.
Unlike Daniel, Lydia had chosen a modest career as an elementary-school teacher. She rarely visited the mansion and often appeared uncomfortable around her mother.
One evening, Lydia found Claire alone in the kitchen.
“You should be careful,” she whispered.
Claire stopped drying a glass.
“About what?”
“Daniel and Mother. They’ve been meeting with lawyers.”
“Do you know why?”
Lydia shook her head. “I heard your name. Mother said they needed to act before you started asking questions.”
Claire wanted to tell Lydia everything, but she could not risk it.
“Thank you for warning me.”
Lydia looked ashamed. “I should have said something earlier. Daniel has always been like this. He becomes kind when he wants something, then cruel when he thinks he owns it.”
Two days later, Simone discovered a draft divorce agreement on Daniel’s private cloud account.
Under the proposed terms, Claire would accept responsibility for several business losses. She would surrender most of her grandmother’s trust and agree not to investigate the Whitmore Foundation.
Daniel planned to present the agreement after transferring the remaining funds.
He believed emotional pressure would make Claire sign.
Evelyn had even written notes about how to break her confidence.
Isolate her.
Embarrass her publicly.
Make her believe she has nowhere to go.
