Chapter 9 - Daniel’s File

Adrian was Alejandro’s only surviving cousin.

They had grown up in the same mansion, attended the same schools, and inherited different sections of the Moretti family empire. Alejandro controlled the parent company and charitable foundation. Adrian managed investment strategy and international development.

He had been present at every major turning point in Alejandro’s life.

Including Daniel Morales’s funeral.

“Put down the lighter,” Alejandro said.

Adrian smiled.

“You nearly died last night, and this is where you choose to spend your morning.”

“You knew I was attacked?”

“The entire board knows.”

“No one outside the estate knows the details.”

Adrian’s smile faded slightly.

Behind Alejandro, Matteo raised his weapon.

Adrian held the flame beneath the corner of the folder.

“Another step, and Daniel’s work disappears.”

Elena moved forward.

“You killed him.”

“I did not touch your husband.”

“You knew what he found.”

“He found fragments and built a fantasy around them.”

“Then why burn the file?”

“Because fantasies can still destroy reputations.”

Adrian glanced at the heart-shaped key in Alejandro’s hand.

“You brought the rabbit key.”

“How did you know where it was?”

Adrian did not answer.

Matteo circled toward the servers.

A second man appeared behind him and fired a stun device. Matteo dropped to one knee but managed to turn and strike the attacker. The lighter fell from Adrian’s hand.

Elena lunged for the folder.

Adrian shoved it toward a metal waste bin where old papers were already burning. Alejandro caught his wrist before he could release it.

For a moment, the cousins stood face to face.

“You approved the transfer,” Alejandro said.

Adrian twisted free.

“You approved it. Your face, your voice, your authorization.”

“A manufactured version of me.”

“In business, the version recorded by the system is the only one that matters.”

Security guards subdued Adrian’s accomplice, but Adrian escaped through a narrow maintenance passage behind the servers. By the time Matteo recovered, the passage door had locked from the other side.

He had vanished into the building.

Elena retrieved Daniel’s folder before the flames reached it. The outer pages were damaged, but most of the contents survived.

Inside were copies of false medical contracts, shell-company registrations, and payment records connecting St. Orison to at least seven other fake charities.

Several signatures belonged to Adrian.

Others belonged to Sofia.

The final document was a handwritten note from Daniel.

Adrian controls the money.

Sofia controls the public story.

Neither controls the Red Archive.

The Patron watches them both.

Alejandro read the words twice.

“Who is the Patron?” Elena asked.

“No one I have ever heard of.”

Mara joined them through Matteo’s secure tablet. She connected the rabbit key to one of the old servers.

A directory opened.

RED ARCHIVE.

Hundreds of encrypted folders appeared, each named after a child.

Emma Morales.

Lucas Reed.

Amelia Stone.

Noah Vale.

Alejandro’s stomach tightened when he saw Sofia’s surname.

“Who is Noah Vale?” he asked.

Elena opened one of Daniel’s surviving documents.

A photograph slid onto the table.

It showed Sofia standing outside a hospital five years earlier. She was holding a newborn baby.

On the back, Daniel had written:

Noah Vale. Declared dead after birth. No death certificate located.

Before anyone could react, a secure call reached Alejandro’s phone.

Sofia appeared on the screen.

She was bruised, frightened, and sitting in an unknown room.

“Adrian knows you opened the archive,” she said.

“Where are you?”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Not after what I helped him do.”

“Tell me where Emma’s name came from.”

Sofia looked toward someone outside the camera frame.

“The archive is not about the foundation money. The money only pays for it.”

“Pays for what?”

A red light began flashing behind her.

Sofia leaned close to the screen.

“The Patron collects children no one will search for.”

The video ended.

Then every folder in the Red Archive began deleting itself.
