Chapter 14 - What Was Buried

Police reached the cemetery before sunrise.
Daniel’s grave had been disturbed, but the coffin remained inside. The lock had been opened with a professional tool. No valuables were missing.
A forensic officer found an empty compartment beneath the coffin lining.
Someone had searched for an object Daniel was believed to have taken to his grave.
Elena stood beneath a black umbrella while investigators worked.
“He told me he wanted to be buried with his wedding ring,” she said.
“Was it there?” Alejandro asked.
“The funeral home said it was.”
The ring was gone.
Mara examined photographs from Daniel’s funeral and discovered that his wedding ring contained a dark red stone. It was large enough to conceal another memory device.
The second half of the archive key.
Someone had reached the grave before them and taken it.
The immediate investigation, however, moved quickly.
Adrian admitted that he had created St. Orison and six other false charities under instructions from Evelyn. He had transferred foundation money into controlled accounts, believing he would eventually receive a percentage.
Sofia had helped conceal the companies’ real ownership.
Her reason was different.
Five years earlier, Sofia had been told her newborn son, Noah, had died shortly after delivery. Daniel later contacted her with evidence that the child had survived and been moved into a private adoption network connected to the Red Archive.
Evelyn offered Sofia information about Noah in exchange for her cooperation.
Sofia agreed.
She falsified board reports, approved transfers, and helped collect voice recordings used to copy Alejandro’s biometric identity.
She also admitted planning to place a mild sedative in his wine.
But she had lost her nerve.
Hours before the dinner, she told Adrian she wanted to cancel the plan. Adrian reported her refusal to Evelyn.
Evelyn abducted Sofia, wore her face, entered the study, and replaced the sedative with the concentrated allergen.
The attack had been designed to kill Alejandro and blame Sofia.
Emma’s last EpiPen had destroyed the plan.
The thirty-eight million dollars was recovered from an account in Singapore before it could be divided. Additional frozen accounts contained more than one hundred million dollars stolen over nine years.
The money was returned to the foundation under court supervision.
Adrian was charged with fraud, conspiracy, attempted murder, and obstruction of justice.
Sofia faced serious charges as well, but her cooperation allowed investigators to locate several children whose identities had been altered through the Red Archive.
Noah was not among those found.
Evelyn refused to name the Patron.
She spoke only once during questioning.
“The Patron existed before Alejandro inherited the foundation. The Patron will exist after he is gone.”
Alejandro removed every compromised board member and placed the foundation under an independent public trust.
He asked Elena to lead a new emergency-allergy program in Daniel’s name.
She accepted under one condition.
“No more secrets kept from the families we claim to help.”
“Agreed,” Alejandro said.
The first Daniel Morales Safety Center was announced three weeks later. It would provide allergy testing, free injectors, training for schools, and emergency support for families unable to afford medication.
Emma received a small yellow case containing two new EpiPens.
She opened it at the kitchen table.
“Two?”
“Two,” Alejandro said.
“So I can save two people?”
“So you will always have what you need to save yourself.”
Emma frowned.
“What about you?”
“I have my own now.”
He showed her the adult emergency injector Dr. Shah had ordered.
Emma seemed satisfied.
During a private ceremony in the estate garden, Alejandro gave Emma a small medal shaped like a rabbit.
The inscription read:
FOR COURAGE WHEN EVERY SECOND MATTERED.
There were no reporters and no television cameras.
Only Elena, Dr. Shah, Matteo, Detective Ward, Mara, and several members of the security team attended.
Emma wore the same yellow dress.
After the ceremony, she climbed onto the bench beside Alejandro.
“Does the story have an ending now?”
“The bad people were caught.”
“All of them?”
Alejandro looked toward the mansion.
“Enough for today.”
Emma rested her head against his arm.
“That means no.”
“No,” he admitted. “It means we are safer, but there are still questions.”
“Daddy liked questions.”
“I wish I had known him better.”
Emma held up the stuffed bunny.
“Maybe Bunny knows him.”
That evening, Mara completed the decryption of the memory card hidden inside the rabbit’s ear.
She called Alejandro into the study.
“There is one file you need to see,” she said.
The recording had been created by Daniel Morales two days before his supposed death.
His face appeared on the screen.
He looked exhausted and afraid.
“If this message opens,” Daniel said, “then the St. Orison network has been exposed.”
Elena moved closer to the monitor.
Daniel continued.
“Adrian, Sofia, and Evelyn are only the first gate. The Patron controls the archive through a room hidden beneath the Moretti estate.”
Alejandro looked toward the bookshelves.
“The private study,” Daniel said. “The red door is behind the north wall.”
The screen went black for a moment.
Then Daniel returned, leaning closer to the camera.
“Alejandro, if Emma is with you, protect her. She is not in the archive because she is my daughter.”
Elena stopped breathing.
“She is there because of who her mother worked for before she met me.”
Elena stared at the screen.
“I never worked for anyone,” she whispered.
Daniel looked directly into the camera as though he could hear her.
“Elena, I am sorry. They changed your memories before we met.”
May you like
The recording ended.
Behind the north bookshelf, something unlocked.
