Chapter 12 - The False Ledger

Alejandro moved Emma and Elena to the most secure residential floor in the estate.
Windows were sealed.
Food was tested before entering.
Every guard was reassigned after biometric verification.
Matteo remained in command, but Alejandro required all security decisions to be approved by two people. Trust would no longer rest on one set of hands.
Emma disliked the locked doors.
“Are we in trouble?” she asked.
“No,” Alejandro said. “The people outside are in trouble.”
“Because they told loud lies?”
“Because we are going to prove what they did.”
Emma placed the stuffed bunny on the table.
“Bunny can help.”
The hardware key opened several remaining sections of the Red Archive, but the most important directory required a second authentication device.
Daniel’s recording had called the rabbit the safest place.
He had hidden only half the key inside the toy.
Elena remembered the yellow thread used to repair the rabbit’s ear.
“Daniel sewed that ear after Emma tore it,” she said. “He worked on it for hours.”
Matteo opened the seam carefully.
Inside was a thin memory card.
It contained a list of transactions, coded messages, and private recordings. Most files were encrypted, but Mara extracted enough information to create a convincing copy of the complete ledger.
A false ledger.
Alejandro announced through compromised foundation channels that Daniel’s full evidence had been recovered. He scheduled a private meeting of the foundation board for that evening.
Only five people received the invitation.
Sofia.
Adrian.
Dr. Shah.
Matteo.
Elena.
The message claimed the physical ledger would be displayed before federal authorities arrived.
It was bait.
Sofia remained in custody, but Detective Ward arranged for false reports suggesting she had escaped from the hospital.
Adrian was still missing.
Evelyn Voss had not been located.
At 8:00 p.m., the foundation boardroom stood empty except for a red folder on the central table. Cameras monitored every entrance.
Alejandro waited in an adjacent room with Ward and Matteo.
Elena stayed at the estate with Emma.
At 8:17, someone entered using Adrian’s credentials.
The figure wore a dark coat and carried a leather case.
It was Adrian.
He checked the corridor twice before approaching the table. He opened the red folder, photographed the documents, and made a phone call.
“The ledger exists,” he said. “Daniel copied the accounts.”
A distorted voice answered through the speaker.
“Destroy it.”
“What about Alejandro?”
“He survived because the child interfered.”
“And Sofia?”
“She has become useless.”
Adrian looked toward the windows.
“I want my payment before I do anything else.”
“You will receive nothing until the rabbit key is recovered.”
“Emma is protected.”
“No child is always protected.”
Alejandro’s hands tightened.
Ward signaled her officers to remain in position. She wanted the caller to reveal more.
Adrian continued.
“Evelyn failed at the estate.”
“Evelyn does not fail.”
“She left evidence.”
“She left what I instructed her to leave.”
The voice sounded neither male nor female after electronic distortion.
Adrian glanced at the door.
“What exactly do you want me to do?”
“Bring Alejandro to the old conservatory. Tell him Sofia will confess. He will come because he still wants to believe betrayal has limits.”
The call ended.
Ward’s team entered.
Adrian threw the false ledger into a shredder and ran toward the emergency stairwell. Matteo intercepted him near the exit.
Adrian struck Matteo with the leather case, but Alejandro blocked the second blow.
The cousins struggled against the glass wall.
Adrian laughed.
“You think arresting me ends this?”
“No,” Alejandro said. “But it begins with you.”
Ward placed Adrian in handcuffs.
Inside the leather case, officers found cash, false passports, biometric masks, and a small vial containing concentrated walnut protein.
Adrian looked at it as though he had never seen it before.
“That is not mine.”
“Your fingerprints are on the case,” Ward said.
“The case came from Evelyn.”
“Then tell us where she is.”
Adrian turned toward Alejandro.
“You want the woman who wore Sofia’s face?”
He smiled.
“She is already back inside your estate.”
Alejandro’s phone rang.

Elena was calling.
When he answered, Emma was screaming in the background.
