Chapter 10 - The Children in the Archive

Mara moved faster than the deletion program.

She disconnected the server from the network, but the wipe continued from an internal command.

“Remove the drives,” she ordered.

Matteo and the security team pulled storage units from the server wall. Some directories vanished. Others survived in damaged fragments.

Emma Morales’s folder remained.

Alejandro opened it.

The first records were ordinary: birth certificate, vaccination history, preschool enrollment, and allergy treatment.

The later files were not.

Photographs showed Emma entering medical clinics, parks, and grocery stores. Someone had recorded her height, her food allergies, her sleeping schedule, and the license plates of Elena’s car.

At the bottom of the directory was a status label.

OBSERVATION ONLY.

DO NOT ACQUIRE WITHOUT PATRON AUTHORIZATION.

Elena read the words and went pale.

“What does acquire mean?”

Alejandro closed the file.

“We are going back to the estate.”

“You know what it means.”

“I know what it appears to mean.”

“My daughter has been watched since she was a baby.”

“And she will not be alone again.”

Matteo ordered a full police escort. Detective Lena Ward, a financial-crimes investigator Alejandro had worked with before, met them outside the foundation building.

Alejandro gave her Daniel’s documents, the fake charity records, and the surviving archive drives.

He did not surrender the rabbit key.

Not yet.

Detective Ward read the note mentioning the Patron.

“You should assume everyone connected to your foundation is compromised.”

“I already do.”

“That includes your private security.”

Matteo’s expression remained unreadable.

Ward continued. “Your credentials moved the money, Mr. Rossi.”

“They were copied.”

“Possibly.”

Alejandro stepped between them.

“Investigate him. Do not waste time provoking him.”

Ward looked at the damaged server drives.

“This is no longer only a fraud case. If these files document planned child abductions, federal authorities will take control.”

“Then call them.”

“I already have.”

As they returned to the estate, Mara recovered a location hidden in Sofia’s video. A reflection in the metal wall behind her contained a partial logo.

Northpoint Cold Storage.

The company had closed eight years earlier. Its warehouse stood near the river, six miles from the foundation headquarters.

Ward prepared a tactical team.

Alejandro insisted on joining.

“You were unconscious less than twelve hours ago,” she said.

“Sofia may know why Emma is in that archive.”

“She also helped steal thirty-eight million dollars.”

“I did not say she was innocent.”

“Then let us do our job.”

Alejandro remained outside the warehouse with Matteo while officers entered.

They found Sofia alone in a locked refrigeration office.

A chain had been fastened around the outer door. Her phone was gone, but she had discovered an old security terminal and used it to contact Alejandro.

She was taken into custody immediately.

At the hospital, Sofia asked to speak with Alejandro before giving a formal statement.

Ward allowed five minutes.

Sofia sat on the edge of a medical bed wearing a gray blanket over her shoulders.

Alejandro remained standing.

“Did you place the allergen in my wine?”

“No.”

“Did you plan to drug me?”

Her silence answered.

“Why?”

“Adrian said we needed three hours. He said the sedative would make you sleep while we completed the transfer.”

“You agreed to steal from the foundation.”

“I thought the money was being moved to protect it.”

“From whom?”

“The Patron.”

“That name appears whenever someone wants to avoid giving me a real answer.”

Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to buy back my son.”

Alejandro placed Noah’s photograph on the bed.

Sofia stared at it.

“He was alive,” she whispered. “Daniel proved it.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“What does this have to do with Emma?”

Sofia looked directly at him.

“Daniel found Noah. That is why they killed him.”

“Who killed Daniel?”

“I never learned the name.”

“Who wore your face in my study?”

“I don’t know, but Adrian provided the disguise.”

“Who altered the substance in the vial?”

Sofia’s hands began to shake.

“It was supposed to be a sedative. I left it in the study for someone else to use. I did not know about the walnut protein.”

“You knew my allergy.”

“Yes.”

“Who else knew?”

“Adrian. Dr. Shah. Matteo. Elena.”

“And the Patron?”

Sofia lowered her voice.

“The Patron knows everything that happens inside your house.”

Someone knocked on the hospital room door.

A nurse entered carrying a sealed evidence bag recovered from Sofia’s clothing.

Inside was a silver cuff link marked with the Moretti family crest.

May you like

Alejandro recognized it.

The cuff link belonged to Matteo.
